World Laughter Day Workshop | The Retreat New Forest

May 4, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Christchurch
Cultural Experiences
May 4th is World Laughter Day. Experience the Transformative Power of Laughter! Join us and help celebrate and escape the stress of daily life in this unique laughter workshop. Not only will you have fun, but you'll also reap the evidence-based physical, emotional, and social benefits of laughter. Led by Lesley Lyle, a Positive Psychologist, Hypnotherapist, and wellbeing expert. SPECIAL OFFER: We're offering 5 FREE places for men! Use code " LAUGHMORE " when booking. Research shows that male laughter creates unique neurological responses in group settings that enhance the experience for everyone. However, wellbeing activities often attract more women than men, so we are offering free places to men with the aim to encourage a more gender-balanced experience. Bring a friend and save! Two tickets for just £20 (£12 each when purchased separately). In times when reasons to laugh can seem scarce, this workshop offers a much-needed opportunity to reconnect with joy and each other through laughter. What to Expect: Despite its name, Laughter Yoga doesn't involve any traditional yoga poses or mats. It refers to the powerful breathing pattern that occurs during laughter—where you exhale more than you inhale, similar to Pranayama breathing in traditional yoga. This extended exhalation created during hearty laughter provides many of the same respiratory benefits as yogic breathing exercises. The workshop combines several approaches to bring more laughter into your life: Laughter Exercises: Dive into guided activities designed to elicit natural, contagious laughter without the use of jokes or humour. Games and Interactive Activities: Experience a variety of playful strategies specifically designed to evoke natural, spontaneous laughter. Science-Backed Benefits: Learn how laughter can significantly reduce stress, alleviate anxiety, and boost overall emotional well-being. Immersive Experience: Enjoy a joyful, uplifting session that will leave you feeling lighter and brighter. Playful Engagement: Reconnect with your inner child through playful, authentic exercises. Supportive Environment: The session blends structured exercises with opportunities for authentic joy in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Everyone Welcome: No prior experience needed. This is not a yoga session , so just come with an open heart ready to laugh! Come as you are, leave with a smile. Whether you're looking to boost your mood, improve your health, or simply enjoy a unique and joyous event, this laughter workshop is for you. Don't miss this chance to laugh like never before and learn techniques to bring more laughter into your daily life. Facilitated by Lesley Lyle, Positive Psychologist, World Laughter Yoga Ambassador, author of "Laugh Your Way to Happiness." Lesley was personally trained by Dr. Madan Kataria (founder of Laughter Yoga) in India in 2011 and has been sharing the gift of laughter ever since. Spaces are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Don't miss out—book your place now! Article about the benefits of laughter HERE Information Source: Lesley Lyle | eventbrite

Introduction to Foraging Course, Sheffield | Beeley Wood

May 5, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Sheffield
Cultural Experiences
Children under 12 come free. Well-behaved dogs on a lead are also more than welcome. What to expect This course will cover the best ways to start and progress through the early stages of your foraging journey. We will take a two-and-a-half-hour walk (covering about two miles) around some woodland and along the River Don, stopping regularly to discuss (and where possible, eat!) the many edible goodies we find along the way, whether that be foliage, flowers, fruits, nuts or mushrooms! What we’ll find depends on the time of year. The route is mostly flat and we’ll go at a steady pace. The main focus will be foraging for wild food, but we will also touch upon medicinal or "bushcraft" uses if relevant to what we find. The course will include: A brief introduction to myself and foraging in general. Finding and discussing around 20 species common across the UK that have food uses. How to identify the species we come across. Information about toxic species to avoid. Foraging laws and principles to ensure you forage legally, safely and responsibly. Trying a couple of pre-prepared wild food-based samples! I also follow up the course with an email to participants with a summary of the species we found and other useful information such as my recommended books for further reading. Making foraging fun and safe Foraging is fun and fascinating, with so many benefits it's unbelievable. It's as safe as anything when approached with the right level of caution, awareness, and knowledge. It’s important to realise however that foraging can be dangerous IF you approach it with a lack of caution (recklessness), and/or a lack of awareness of the risks and without the respect nature deserves. During the course, I will show you how to approach foraging in a way whereby you don't just minimise but eliminate all risks, so you are free to enjoy the many benefits that foraging brings into your life. Log in to nature Humans have been foraging as a way to survive for hundreds of thousands of years. Before farming, this was how we survived - finding what nature provided in harmony with the seasons and the land. This period before farming forms over 95 per cent of our existence as a species, so to our brains and bodies, foraging is incredibly natural - this is one of the reasons it feels so good! Foraging is one of the best ways to disconnect from our busy modern lives of emails, social media and technology, and reconnect with nature and our ancestral roots. During this course we will log off from the modern world and log in to nature! Meeting point and parking For this course, we’ll meet at the end of Beeley Wood Lane (S6 1QT), where it meets Beeley Wood, by the Public Footpath sign just before the entrance to the business site "Abbey Forged Products". A postcode to get you to the general area is S6 1QT, though please note that following this postcode on Google Maps (and other Sat Navs) will NOT take you to the exact meeting point. Therefore, to get to where we are meeting and starting, please instead use the Google Maps “dropped pin” link below. Dropped pin https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZMQ6SxmAi3p988Bz5?g_st=ic For parking, you can park on the side of Beeley Wood Lane anywhere near to the meeting point. I will be waiting at the meeting point from at least 9:55 AM. I recommend you bring Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. The path and route we take is about two miles in total and is mainly flat and a mostly even path. However, it's still a woodland environment, and we won’t always be on the smooth concrete path that goes through the woodland, so please ensure you have appropriate footwear, as small sections could be muddy and uneven. Your phone but only for the camera function should you wish to take any photos/videos/notes. I will however send out an email at the end of the course with a list of the species we come across. Some water or other kind of hydrating drink if you wish. About me The Forager Within, founded by James Hill, runs public and private foraging courses across Yorkshire and Manchester. His love of foraging started on nature walks with his parents, where picking wild food was just a way of life. In adulthood, James hit a low point in 2015 which re-ignited a passion for foraging. By the Spring of 2016, foraging was a hobby, an obsession, and then in 2022, a business with a mission to connect people to nature and improve physical and mental health in the process. The singer, songwriter and producer behind the acclaimed Melbourne dream-pop band Hachiku, Ostendorf’s music has covered loss before – her grandmother, her beloved dog – and the struggles of identity and growing up. But until now, she often felt like an observer, writing from a pragmatic distance rather than truly feeling. Hachiku’s second album, The Joys of Being Pure at Heart, sees Ostendorf lean into a new mode of emotional openness: not only with others, but with herself. As the saying goes, to be loved is to be known – with these 10 songs, Ostendorf lets her guard down and embraces radical honesty and deep human connection. Subverting the name of a beloved indie band, The Joys of Being Pure at Heart holds onto a sense of youthful optimism, even when the world seems gloomy. By opening her heart to new possibilities and placing trust in those around her, Ostendorf faces all of life’s uncertainties and difficulties head-on. In searching for purpose, she accepts that being human is about light, dark and every shade in between. “I am learning to allow myself to love and be loved, and reach a stage where I can be compassionate and gentle with myself, so I can show compassion to others,” she says. “Many of these songs are me talking to myself, – trying to soothe myself and calm myself down, while searching for purpose in the bigger picture, which is what art is so helpful for.” --- Alex Etchart & Vientos Glitchy, Witchy, Bilingual & Queer Vientos connect dual-heritage folk roots to prog-rock electrónica to get crowds pumping to an earthy, girthy new sound. Drenched in harmony, simmering with continent-hopping percussion, Alex' expansive range, neo soul riffs & utopian storytelling calls us to be our highest selves, holding nothing back. A cinematic dancescape of queer love in diáspora. “Cross-pollinating communities & spaces, keeping the folk flame alive in ways only Alex can" - SAM LEE --- More about FRESH Thursdays... FRESH happens every Thursday during our open seasons. It is a platform to bring you fresh new music served up alongside a homecooked plant based meal, board games and candles. It can be hard to get people out to hear music that they don’t know yet & this is why we decided to offer dinner as an incentive to try something new, these gigs are cosy, communal nights and often you get to hear completely new music for the very first time. The music varies across multiple genres but it is usually fairly gentle listening type music & well suited to a relaxed Thursday night. The gigs are seated and during the sets the audience is very music focused & quiet with time to chat in between the sets and at the end when we keep the bar open. We cook the food from scratch usually and dinner is well suited to lover of vegetables and wholesome cooking, it's usually something like a dhal, veggie chilli, tacos, roast veg or similar, our base line is vegan sometimes with veggie options. We can cater for nut/gluten free meals, but nuts & gluten are used in the kitchen so if you have serious allergies please bear that in mind. Doors at 7pm, we aim to get dinner ready by 8pm and will bring it to you when its ready… music usually starts around 8pm, sometimes later if it’s a busy night for food (we are a tiny team) and we aim to have the music finished by 10-10.15 pm. We can only guarantee dinner with advance tickets and these days we cap dinner at 60 meals and the food tickets do often sell out. We hope/think it's obvious that quality music and dinner for £10 is all about culture & community and that these events cost us money… If you can afford to purchase a higher level ‘Cobalt supporters‘ ticket we appreciate the additional help towards costs very much. Fine Art
We’ll be looking at paintings and sculptures on the theme of life and death, and hearing about the background and motivation of the artists who created them. For those who’d like to, there will be an opportunity to share your first impressions and how the artworks resonate with your own experience, but no one will be put on the spot. You don’t need to know anything about art to come along, all are very welcome. Rev Suzanne Nockels ran the 'Talking Life, Talking Art' sessions at Graves Gallery for many years, is a minister in the city and a chaplain at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. Please donate if you're able and help keep your museums open and available for everyone to enjoy. Suggested donation £5 – when you select your tickets, please scroll down and select ‘General Admission + Donation’. This event is hosted by Graves Gallery, and is running alongside Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival that is taking place throughout May 2025.
