The History of Witchcraft and Feminism | The Guildhall

May 29, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Salisbury
Cultural Experiences
The witch is a deeply important and appealing figure, and her story is more relevant than ever. Witches weren’t evil, and they certainly didn’t wear pointy black hats. Instead, society has long used the idea of the witch as a dumping ground for everything it fears or hates in women. Witches are old—too old to be sexy, too old to bear children—and even today, we stigmatise older women as “problematic” or “ugly”. Exploring the true history of witches reveals much about ourselves, how we got here, and how we can change. But who hunted witches? Surprisingly, it wasn’t mostly men. It was often younger women, pressured by patriarchal systems to blame older women in exchange for temporary favour—favour that disappeared as they aged. This history still echoes today, as generational divides between women persist and even worsen. Learning about witches reminds us of the importance of solidarity between generations—why we must stand together to break free from these old patterns. This training day will give participants the confidence to identify a wide range of grasses at a time of year when many of them are not flowering. Throughout the day several species will be repeatedly examined and candidates tested on these, leaving them able to confidently identify 20 species. Lifts available from/back to Salisbury station on request. Adverse weather This is an outdoor run course on an exposed site, and as such we request that participants bring suitable clothing including sunhats, sunblock, and full waterproofs & fleeces. As the climate breaks down, we do occasionally have severe weather where either it is very difficult to take notes due to prolonged heavy rain, or temperatures have reached a point where long exposure can be detrimental to health. In these instances, we will run a condensed version of the course, where we aim to see all the species before lunch but have less time to take notes on them. We will then give attendees free access to the corresponding online course for 24 hours, which means you can take notes and look at the species in more detail in the comfort of your home. We have built a corresponding online catalogue of courses for this purpose, and we therefore feel we can offer the same training experience while looking after attendees' welfare in the field. Therefore if you look at the forecast before the course and start panicking - don’t worry, we’ve got you! Course certificate This course can be used as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We invite attendees to download their own certificate and complete the numbers of hours spent on the course, as we are aware some attendees spend more time reading up about courses before the day, and writing their notes up and sitting the online course tests afterwards. The hours on your certificate should accurately reflect this time. Feedback from previous courses ‘I really enjoyed the course and found it much more useful than courses I have attended recently’ ‘Just wanted to say thank you for such an enjoyable and interesting day. Dominic is always such an excellent and relaxed tutor, who can even make learning grasses so enjoyable.’ ‘Dominic is a brilliant teacher, it's the quirks one remembers well, not keys.’ 'Relaxed atmosphere, so it didn't feel as though you were under pressure to get things right ' Information Source: The Species Recovery Trust | eventbrite

It can be hard to get people out to hear music that they don’t know yet & this is why we decided to offer dinner as an incentive to try something new, these gigs are cosy, communal nights and often you get to hear completely new music for the very first time. The music varies across multiple genres but it is usually fairly gentle listening type music & well suited to a relaxed Thursday night. The gigs are seated and during the sets the audience is very music focused & quiet with time to chat in between the sets and at the end when we keep the bar open. We cook the food from scratch usually and dinner is well suited to lover of vegetables and wholesome cooking, it's usually something like a dhal, veggie chilli, tacos, roast veg or similar, our base line is vegan sometimes with veggie options. We can cater for nut/gluten free meals, but nuts & gluten are used in the kitchen so if you have serious allergies please bear that in mind. Doors at 7pm, we aim to get dinner ready by 8pm and will bring it to you when its ready… music usually starts around 8pm, sometimes later if it’s a busy night for food (we are a tiny team) and we aim to have the music finished by 10-10.15 pm. We can only guarantee dinner with advance tickets and these days we cap dinner at 60 meals and the food tickets do often sell out. We hope/think it's obvious that quality music and dinner for £10 is all about culture & community and that these events cost us money… If you can afford to purchase a higher level ‘Cobalt supporters‘ ticket we appreciate the additional help towards costs very much. Gather in a friendly group with Lynette, The White Witch of Wiltshire, and Artist, Tamsin Loveday for this gentle, crafty workshop celebrating Beltane. Bundle together a range of natural materials to make a mini "Witches broom" or a hand brush, bound with colourful threads and ribbon, and personalised with charms and herbs. Beltane is the "May Day" festival, marking the start of Summer, traditionally celebrated midway between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. Some customs associated with Beltane, such as holding bonfires and making a "May Bush," are beautiful ways to connect at this time of year. Lynette will lead us in a short welcoming and cleansing ritual to create a safe space and help us to set our intentions. She will talk a little about Beltane, and about the use of brooms to set the scene. Lynette will guide us in setting intentions and share information about colours and symbols of the festival. Tamsin will support all creative aspects of the workshop and make sure that we all have everything we need for a companionable evening of crafting. We will bundle together natural Coir, a sustainable fibre used in brush making for centuries. We will chose from a bouquet of herbs and other plant material, coloured threads, charms and ribbons to personalise our brushes and brooms. Refreshments, materials and eventbrite fees are included in the ticket price. You will recieve a portion of Coir, a choice of herbs and plant material, a choice of symbolic charms, threads, ribbons and herbs. Beltane Conscious Dance at The Retreat | The Retreat New Forest

May 2, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Christchurch
Cultural Experiences
Beltane is the May Day Festival and is synonymous with dancing around the May Pole and marks the beginning of Summer . It is one of the eight sabbats of the Wheel of the Year , which takes place at the beginning of May. This festival is named after the Celtic Sun God , Belinos (or Belenus). The name Beltane means ' fire of Bel '. It is often associated with fertility, new growth, and longer, warmer days . Fire is the center of most Beltane celebrations . People would dance around the fire for purification and fertility blessings . Couples would sometimes jump through a fire together to pledge themselves to each other. Traditionally, only the bonfire lit in honour of Bel would burn. After the celebration, members of the community would take a piece from the hearth fire and light the fire in their own homes . The May Pole is indicative of old English village celebrations . It is adorned with a ring of flowers on the top which represents the fertility Goddess. Colourful ribbons , weaving through the dance, symbolise the spiral of life and the union of the Sun God and Earth Goddess . Join SunFire Dance at The Retreat to celebrate the turning of the wheel at our Celtic Calendar Conscious Dance, Beltane , on Friday ,2 Ma y, where we will meditate on the significance of this festival and season in our lives, dance as wildly or mildly as you wish to an eclectic mix of music and gather around the fire for a ceremony. release, poetry and song. We bring our conscious dance to The Retreat in the New Forest, where we have opportunities of dancing in their beautiful Centre Studio, outside on the lawn, and later in the year at the walled garden, in the woods and around the lake. We will also be gathering around the fire at some of our events. So if you love dancing in nature under the glorious sky, then please join us in an immersive and free-flowing conscious dance. Conscious Dance is an embodied practice of movement and free flowing dance that integrates emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing . We embark on a movement journey allowing moments of gentle flow, natural rhythm, release, playfulness, elation, stillness and reflection . When we move, we can quiet the mind and innately embody the rhythm of the music , freeing our selves and opening us to new perspectives. There are no steps to follow, just your own feet and your own heartbeat moving spontaneously to an eceltic array of music . There will be moments of guided meditation and others where you can deep dive into the music . The event begins with an opening circle, setting intentions, followed by a meditation, an hour and a half dancewave, closing circle, then we gather and socialising around the fire. You are welcome to bring musical instruments for our gathering around the fire in song. You are invited to express youself freely through your unique dance and movement. "We dance for laughter, We dance for tears, We dance for madness, We dance for fears, We dance for hopes, We dance for screams, We are the dancers, We create the dreams." - Albert Einstein What to expect: A safe and sacred space where you are invited to connect to yourself and others in community. A guided meditation and visualisation . Conscious Dance soundwave to get you moving spontaneously to the music where you can express yourself freely. We dance sober - so please arrive sober and remain so for the duration of the event. This is a phone-free process (in other words we don't scroll through our dance, we embody our dance0 . However, we will be taking photos and videos for a 'posing' track as it is such a special venue and we realise that you may want a momento and some shots around the fire. Cameras are then to be put away for the majority of the dance, so that we can express ourselves freely without inhibitions . We respect ourselves and others in the dance. If you would like to dance with another seek their non-verbal consent (a smile or nod) and thank them after your shared dance with your hands in prayer or Namaste position ). If you would prefer not to dance with someone, place your hands on your heart as an indication that you prefer to dance solo in your process at that moment. You may accept or offer an invition as you feel called to. Our facilitarors may offer guidance . Everything is by invitation.
