Detroit's Slum Village have carried the old-school, funk, and soul-filled hip-hop torch of genre pioneers A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and the Pharcyde. Originally comprising rappers Baatin and T3 and producer/rapper J Dilla, the group debuted in the early '90s as Ssenepod, later changing their name to Slum Village for the release of their debut, Fan-Tas-Tic, Vol. 1, in 1997. Over the course of almost a dozen efforts, Slum Village issued their highest-charting album, Trinity (Past, Present and Future), in 2002, peaking on the Hot 100 in 2004 with the single "Selfish," featuring Kanye West and John Legend. Their lineup has experienced significant changes due to the exit of J Dilla (2001), the death of Baatin (2009), and the departure of Elzhi (2010). Slum Village became a duo in the 2010s with T3 joined by producer Young RJ. Assorted compilations and projects such as Yes! (2015) and The Source (2019), along with performances well into the 2020s, have followed since then. Nothing beats a home-cooked meal shared with family! And this is what inspires our Family Style Cookery Classes , a fun, laid-back homestyle cooking experience. It’s a cookery class with a conscience, like they say! Your class will be led by our wonderful Chef Amal from Egypt at Coexist Community Kitchen in Bristol . At our Family Style Cookery Classes, you will be grouped with other participants and prepare dishes together as a team. Think of Chef Amal as the head of the family! She will take care of dividing the class into groups, and each group will be responsible for creating one of the dishes. Of course, you are welcome and encouraged to move around during the class to learn about the other dishes being prepared. Throughout the evening, Chef Amal will share stories about their food and culture, and explain how to prepare each of the dishes so you come away with some new cooking tricks and inspiration from Egypt. Everyone has heard of ancient Egypt and the pyramids that have made it a tourist destination, but people may not know so much about our delicious cuisine. Egyptian people are happy and welcoming and love to cook and share food. I started to cook when I was 10 with my mum and grandma. The first thing I made was Egyptian flatbread. I love to make Koshary, which is a mixture of types of pasta with rice and spices that is served with special sauces and is very popular in Egypt. I used to run a restaurant in Cairo, mainly serving Koshary and falafel and other Egyptian specialities which I teach in my classes. I take every opportunity I can to cook. I volunteer in the community in Bristol where I cook traditional recipes that I have brought with me from my country and I look forward to sharing them with you.” We’re excited to have you in the class! Please take note of a few final reminders: We will send you a reminder email 3 days before the class takes place. We require a certain number of participants to run this class and reserve the right to cancel it due to insufficient enrolment . ADHD Business Community | Bambalan

Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Bristol
Cultural Experiences
Welcome to the ADHD Business Community event! There are a disproportionate number of people in business who have or think they have ADHD. If you run your own business or work within the corporate world, there are huge strengths but also continual struggles from having ADHD. Where do you go when you want to talk about your ADHD? Currently, there aren't many options available to us. We are setting up the ADHD Network Community (Bristol), for people with ADHD to network, share tips and experiences, and discuss challenges. We will meet up for dinner and great conversation in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Some adults with ADHD have very successful careers. Others may struggle with a variety of challenges, including poor communication skills, distractibility, procrastination, and difficulty managing complex projects. We find that most people are somewhere in the middle. Risk-taking comes naturally to many people with ADHD. Whether driven by boredom or a need for change and new things, people with ADHD simply gravitate toward the new and exciting. Our ability to look at the bigger picture and come up with innovative and exciting ideas makes us great in business. We just sometimes need a bit of support. Information Source: eventbrite

The Military Press is a classic that ought to be treated right. Others will show you how to press strict and weak—or how to put up a lot of weight sloppily. We press strict and strong, the way Soviet weightlifters did in the early 1960s. The Zercher Squat is the ultimate “squat for the people!” Simple technique. No strain on the wrists, shoulders, or elbows. No need for a rack or a spotter. A great carryover to sports and other lifts. As a bonus, an unbelievable training effect on the abs. Kettlebell 201: The Rite of Passage Workshop - Bristol, UK | StrengthLab

Jun 21, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Bristol
Sports & Fitness
Prerequisites To attend this workshop, you need to be competent in swings, get-ups, and goblet squats. Ignore at your peril. Learn these skills from a Kettlebell 101 workshop , a StrongFirst accredited gym , or a StrongFirst certified SFG instructor . INSTRUCTOR Claire Booth, StrongFirst Senior Instructor SCHEDULE START 1030 - 1430 BST REGISTRATION at 10.15 CONTACT This workshop is organized and licensed by Claire Booth Training LTD. Email all registration and other questions to claire@bodyology.co.uk. Registration Cancellation by Participant: Registration fees are non-refundable. No refunds will be granted. Registrants may transfer their registration to another person for no fee. Kettlebell 201: The Rite of Passage Once you have reached the impressive yet realistic “Timeless Simple” standard, you have choices to make. Stay on a monastic diet of swings and get-ups, slowly chipping away at “Sinister.” Or try something “same but different”: the snatch plus the clean and military press, the classic Rite of Passage. The Snatch is “the Tsar of the kettlebell lifts.” Thanks to more muscles working and twice the distance travelled, it accomplishes even more than the esteemed swing. Achieve total body explosive power, ruthless conditioning, and a vice like grip. Burn fat like never before. All with a lighter kettlebell—save space in your home, car trunk, or deployment kit. Once we have taught you the skills with our usual attention to detail, we will send you off to succeed with a Strong Endurance™ snatch plan. The one-arm Clean-and-Press will rival any other pressing exercise when it comes to shoulder strength and muscular development. It is untouchable when it comes to shoulder health, thanks to its ergonomic perfection. The military press comes equipped with the “Rite of Passage” type programming—possibly the most reliable progression ever. Three versions of the ROP—“Jurassic,” “907 Hypertrophy,” and “Heavy”—will keep you gaining for a long time. Kettlebell 201 ROP sets high goals—and gives you the skills and the roadmap to reach them. Do you have what it takes? Sign up and power to you! Information Source: Claire Booth Training LTD | eventbrite

A Series of Led Retreat Days with Bristol Insight Meditation for 2025 | Glenfrome Primary School

Jun 21, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Bristol
Cultural Experiences
Day retreats take place mostly in a setting of companionable silence, including during the lunch period. Silence offers an opportunity to attend to one’s own experience without the need to be anyone for other people. There will be a chance for a chat with a cup tea at the start and end of the day and during the day there will usually be time for questions and discussion with the teacher. You will be asked to sit quietly for periods of up to 30 minutes, with varying amounts of guidance. These sittings are interspersed with periods of walking and movement. We recognise that this level of silence may be challenging for newcomers and is not always suitable for everyone at every time. If you have any concerns or wonder whether a retreat is the right thing for you at this time, you are welcome to get in touch with us. Some retreats do require attendees to have some prior meditation experience. If this is the case it will be stated in the retreat description. We welcome volunteers to help on the day, if you would like to help in this way please contact us. Fees We ask for a booking fee to cover costs of venues, teachers’ expenses, ongoing administrative costs. We offer an Early Bird (closes 1 month before the event) and Tier 1 rates. A freely given rate is also available so that no-one is excluded. Dana Dana can be translated as cultivating generosity or giving. The teachers who lead our retreats receive their travel costs and ‘out-of-pocket’ expenses but do not receive any payment for their teaching. However they are happy to receive voluntary contributions from participants in the events they lead. These offerings are traditionally called dana. Most of our teachers depend on dana for most or all of their livelihood. Our teachers are following an ancient tradition, offering teachings freely just as they received them freely from a previous generation of teachers. In this way the dharma (the teachings of the Buddhist tradition) is not made an object of commerce, and the relationship between teacher and student is based upon trust, freedom, and mutual generosity. If you attend one of our events and appreciate what the teacher has offered, we warmly invite you to make whatever contribution you feel appropriate. If you do so, you will be making a vital contribution to their livelihood and helping them to continue teaching on this generous basis, particularly in situations where people cannot afford to pay anything. Sunday 16 th Feb 2025 - ONLINE Retreat Day - How to Thrive in Hard Times During this online daylong Stephen would like to explore the fact that we are faced with ever more challenging situations and often conflict at the personal, social and planetary levels. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and sometimes lost. Yet they can also be a wake-up call. Can we find equanimity and steadiness within such challenging situations? Can dharma help us to dance with uncontrollable life? Stephen Fulder: was born in London in 1946, educated at Oxford University and has a PhD. He is the founder and senior teacher of Tovana (the Israel Insight Society), which is the major Buddhist practice organisation in Israel. Stephen has been teaching intensively for 30 years and has written many books, including his new title: How To Thrive in Hard Times: A Buddhist Manual (Watkins Publishers) . He has been engaged in conflict amelioration work in the Middle East for many years. www.stephenfulder.com , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Fulder Saturday 5th April - To Expect Wonders with Kirsten Kratz (in person) “Though I do not expect a plant to spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders.” Henry David Thoreau Buddhist teachings explore how to nourish and cultivate wholesome seeds of intention, liberating ways of looking, that can connect us directly with our yearning for true happiness. During uncertain, confusing and frightening times, one of our habitual reflexes is to create limiting, separating or even polarising narratives, thus perpetuating suffering for others and ourselves. How can we discover an increasing freedom from our conditioned painful reactions, to allow us to attend to life from a place informed by connection, care and wisdom? We will explore the heart-mind’s capacity for compassion, balanced presence and engagement. There will be periods of sitting and walking/movement meditation, practice suggestions, guided practices, reflections and an opportunity to ask questions. The day will be held in silence. Kirsten Kratz: has practised Buddhist meditation in Asia and the West since 1993. She started teaching in 2006 and since 2015 she has been ‘teacher in residence’ supporting those on personal retreat at Gaia House. Her love and understanding of Dharma has been strongly influenced by, among others, the teachings of her friend and teacher colleague, Rob Burbea. One of her particular passions is exploring how wisdom teachings can foster appropriate responses to the challenges of our time, and Kirsten sees her involvement in activism as an important expression of her practice. Kirsten is co-initiator of the “Dharma Action Network for Climate Engagement” ( DANCE ) and supporting teacher of Freely Given Retreats . Saturday 10th May - Reclaiming Your Attention in the Digital Age with Mary Rose Clarke (In Person) Join us for a Dharma Inquiry Day to explore how digital technology shapes our attention and impacts on our well-being. Through Dharma wisdom, meditation practice, and guided reflection we will investigate when and how our focus is being hijacked—and, more importantly, how to reclaim it. This day offers: * A space for compassionate inquiry free from judgment. * Practical tools to reset your relationship with technology so that it best serves you. * Awareness practices to uncover what may drive compulsive tech use. * A chance to anchor into your deepest intention of how you want to spend this life. * Support in regaining a sense of autonomy and clarity in your interactions with digital devices. Together, we will cultivate mindfulness, presence, and freedom in navigating this modern challenge.' Sunday June 21st June - Intiuitive Awakening with Gavin Milne (in person) We are living in extraordinary times, summoning us to awaken, whilst turning towards the unfolding challenges we face - personal and collective. During this day retreat, we will explore and sense into the place of intuition within all of this. Practically speaking, how this might translate into a wise balance of discipline and creative freedom in the lives we are living? Awakening to that which is timeless, we align with our own unique expression of our deeper nature. The day of practice will be in silence, alternating between sitting and walking meditation. There will be practice instructions, as well as Dharma talks, and all levels of experience, backgrounds and identities are welcome. Gavin Milne : has been practicing the Dharma since 2004 and began teaching in 2015. He is particularly interested in the role and relevance of these teachings towards the individual, relational and societal transformations being called for in this era. And as such embracing and exploring practice in all areas of our life. He is also trained in Internal Family Systems, and is a student of the Diamond Approach by A.H Almaas. Saturday 25th October - River Wolton (in person) River Wolton: attended her first Insight Meditation retreat in 2000, and subsequently helped to establish Sheffield Insight Meditation. She is a Community Dharma Leader authorised by Gaia House Teacher Council, and completed Dharma Teacher Training with Bodhi College. A former Derbyshire Poet Laureate, she has led writing and arts projects for many years, and is an activist in the LGBTQIA+ community. At our Family Style Cookery Classes, you will be grouped with other participants and prepare dishes together as a team. Think of Chef Halise as the head of the family! She will take care of dividing the class into groups, and each group will be responsible for creating one of the dishes. Of course, you are welcome and encouraged to move around during the class to learn about the other dishes being prepared. I am from eastern Turkey, although at university I met people from other regions and learnt about various different cultures and recipes. I grew up in a big city with my three big sisters who were already helping my mum in the kitchen. I was always asking ‘Please can I help?’ By the time I got to university I had learned how to cook just by watching! In the summer I loved going to stay with my mum’s family, who lived in a village. They grew and cooked their own vegetables. There I had my Grandma all to myself and learned to make yoghurt and cheese, which I still make for my own family. Big meals at home with family and friends were an important part of our lives. We had to be strong to manage the huge pots we used. Our food traditions are very varied with lots of different recipes for meat and vegetables.” We’re excited to have you in the class! Please take note of a few final reminders: We will send you a reminder email 3 days before the class takes place. We require a certain number of participants to run this class and reserve the right to cancel it due to insufficient enrolment . If this occurs, we will, at your convenience, transfer you to another class of your choice of the same value. If this option does not suit you, you will have the choice to receive either a gift voucher for the class or a full refund. Space | The Fleece

Alternative
Space are an indie/alternative dance band from Liverpool, England, who rose to prominence in the mid 90s' with hit singles such as "Female of the Species", "Me and You Versus the World", "Neighbourhood", "Avenging Angels" and "The Ballad of Tom Jones", the latter a duet with Cerys Matthews of Catatonia, and are still active today. Space pursued an eclectic sound dubbed "queasy listening" by critics, embracing electronica and sampling in their work and drawing from genres as diverse as hip hop, techno, post-punk, ska, lounge music, easy listening and film scores, the result of the differing tastes between band members. The group were also noted for their deliberately tongue-in-cheek, dark humoured lyrics inspired by films, which frequently deal with topics such as serial killers, failed relationships, social outcasts, and mental illness. Whilst Space's eclecticism and camp humour polarised listeners and critics, they have maintained a devoted cult following. Information Source: The Fleece Bristol | eventbrite
