Author Talk: Dr Greg de Moore | Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts

💥Tom Wills: Sport, Society and a Very Australian Tragedy💥 Tom Wills was a man of astonishing talent and impossible contradictions; a sporting hero whose life unfolded against the raw, restless backdrop of colonial Australia. In this evocative talk, acclaimed author and psychiatrist Greg de Moore traces the arc of Wills’ life: bright with promise, shadowed by loss, and deeply entwined with the country that made and unmade him. 📅 Date: Thursday 7 August at 12:30 PM 📍 Location: Henry Carmichael Theatre, Level 1, 280 Pitt Street 🎟️ Tickets: Free for SMSA members, $10 for Friends and Non-Members You can't miss this talk if you’re drawn to true stories that illuminate the past and lay bare the society that shaped them! ABOUT THE BOOKThis is the story of Tom Wills - flawed genius, sporting libertine, fearless leader and agitator, Australia's first great cricketer - the man most often credited with creating the game we now know as Australian Rules football. Sent to the strict Rugby School in England at fourteen, Tom returned as a worldly young man whose cricket prowess quickly captured the hearts of the colony. But away from the adoring crowds, in the desolation of the Queensland outback, he experienced first-hand the devastating effects of racial tension when his father was murdered in the biggest massacre of Europeans by First Nations people. Yet, five years later, Tom coached the first Aboriginal cricket team. Tom Wills lived hard and fast, challenging authority on and off the field. But when his physical talents began to fade, the psychological demons that alcohol and adrenaline had kept at bay surged to the fore, driving him to the most brutal of suicides. He was forty-four and destitute. Greg de Moore has carefully pieced together Tom's life, giving us an extraordinary portrait of one of Australia's first sporting heroes, a man who lived by his own rules and whose contribution to Australian history has endured for more than 150 years. This updated edition of the bestselling and authoritative biography includes new research and addresses the most troubling of questions surrounding Tom Wills' spectacular yet tragic life. ABOUT THE AUTHORAssociate Professor Greg de Moore is a psychiatrist, historian and author. He is based at Westmead Hospital in western Sydney. His four books include Tom Wills: the insubordinate life of an Australian sporting legend which blends mental health and Australian history, winning numerous awards and was short-listed for the National Biography Award. He is also co-author of Australia’s Game which documents the history of Australian Rules football from the mid-nineteenth century to the present; and Finding Sanity: John Cade, lithium and the taming of bipolar disorder, the biography of John Cade and Australia's greatest mental health achievement: the discovery of lithium for the treatment of bipolar disorder. The night sees some of Wales' best touring comedians take to the stage at Tŷ Pawb. With performances by: Noel James, leader of the evening. Noel has been treading the boards for over twenty years. In 2018 he reached the pre-final round of BGT. According to one reviewer he has the 'soul of a poet', and his comedy depends to some extent on the nature of words, for playing with language takes his fancy. And if you make sense of the language, it will lead to censorship. The food area will be open before the show and the bar will be open all night! Beth Jones, originally from North Wales, Beth started her stand-up career down in the capital Cardiff, and she is now a familiar face on the comedy scene in Wales and Southern England. Sallie Kincaid is the daughter of the biggest man in a small town, the charismatic Duke Kincaid. By the time she is just eight years old, the Duke has remarried and had a son, Eddie. While Sallie is her father’s daughter, sharp-witted and resourceful, Eddie is his mother’s son, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident, and Sallie is cast out. Nine years later, she returns, determined to reclaim her place in the family. That’s a lot more complicated than Sallie expected, and she enters a world of conflict and lawlessness. Sallie confronts the secrets and scandals that hide in the shadows of the Big House, navigates the factions in the family and town, and finally comes into her own as a bold, sometimes reckless bootlegger. Alzheimers & Dementia Azure on Terrain - Terroir | Highlanes Gallery

Theater
Join a lively and reflective discussion with artist Claire Halpin, in a participant-centred session, its ambition to create inclusive discussion around artwork. Using Visual Thinking Strategies, the session is more a discussion where you can offer your opinion in what is going on in the artwork. No prior knowledge or experience is needed and this is an enjoyable way of discovering more about an artwork and hearing what others have to say. The session is free to book, an hour long, and in-person at the gallery. About: For over five years, Highlanes Gallery has been involved in the Azure Programme developed especially for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Looking at the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection and Exhibition Programme, you will have an opportunity to look at art more closely in a caring, friendly and social environment, discussing the pieces and giving opinions in a non-judgmental setting. Context: Dementia-related diseases affect roughly 48,000 people in Ireland, leaves those suffering from it feeling isolated and often frustrated. By providing a friendly and inclusive environment in which people can freely participate in active discussion Highlanes Gallery hopes to allow participants, and their carers feel like a more active and visible part of the community. Studies of previous programmes such as those run by the Museum of Modern Art in New York have shown that art therapy and creative expression has been shown to benefit dementia and Alzheimer’s patients, who show greater self-confidence and elevated moods in the weeks following the events. These studies have led to the formulation of the Azure project, a joint effort between the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Age and Opportunity, and a number of Irish Galleries including Highlanes to increase support and awareness of dementia in Ireland. If you want to discuss any aspect of what a session might involve, please contact Aoife Ruane on aruane@highlanes.ie. Information Source: Highlanes Gallery | eventbrite
