Stop Grasping, Understand Emptiness | Akshobya Kadampa Buddhist Centre

Stop Grasping. Understand the True Nature of Things Mar 13 - Apr 17 Time: 11:00 – 12:30pm or 7:00 – 8:30pm Cost: $15 per class or $72 for the series Why do we have mental pain? What is the root cause of all our negative states of mind? Buddha explained it was because we don’t understand how things really exist. Buddha’s teachings on the wisdom that realizes the true nature of all things, known as emptiness, allows us to understand and eventually experience directly how things actually exist. At the moment our minds are continually under the influence of a deep-seated ignorance – a mistake – that causes us to misapprehend how things exist. We perceive phenomena as existing entirely outside of our minds. This mistake leads us to assigning intrinsic qualities (good/bad…attractive/unattractive) to persons, things and situations, which then gives rise to the various uncontrolled and reactive emotional responses that are the underlying causes of all the conflicts and sufferings that trouble our minds. Through the meditation on emptiness we discover that in fact all phenomena are “empty” of existing outside of our mind. This in turn allows us to experience our lives in a wonderfully different way. We understand that objects exist in a much more pliable state and that it’s up to us to decide what’s the best way to relate to them. We become like someone who is dreaming and becoming aware that they are dreaming. In this way we gain the freedom to transform the circumstances of the dream (our life!) into something joyful and meaningful. In this series, following Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s practical and accessible Modern Buddhist presentation, Kelsang Khacho will explain and guide meditations on emptiness, and learn how to apply this liberating wisdom in daily life. Everyone is welcome! 11am - 12:30pm 7:00 - 8:30pm Facebook-f Twitter Instagram Youtube Information Source: Akshobya Kadampa Buddhist Centre | eventbrite

Program Overview: For youth ages 12-18 After a successful 4 week program initative, Ogden Youth Muay Thai will be opening up for drop in classes from participants age 12-18. Parent permission and signed waivers are required and particpants must sign a safety contract. What should you know, as parents/guardians? Parents and guardians should understand there is always the potential risk of injury when training in Muay Thai or any combat sport. Chris and Elaine will take all precautions to ensure that techniques are taught appropriately and safely in a manner that allows participants to learn basic offensive and defensive skills. There will be no sparring (practice fighting) during these 4 weekly sessions. The youth participants will practice “shadow boxing” (moving in isolation without a target/opponent) and using pads (hitting or kicking cushioned targets with a partner but no opponent). Sessions will also include weekly lessons that engage participants in self reflection while challenging their understandings of strength, competence, confidence and connection to others. Parents/guardians must sign a permission form and a waiver in order to have their dependent join and engage in this 4 week initiative. What will participants need? All participants must bring their own water bottle, wear athletic clothing and be prepared to move and sweat. Generally, Muay Thai is practiced with bare feet, but due to the facility, we will require socks and running shoes as there is no padded flooring. We will provide hand wraps, gloves and a variety of pads (Thai pads, belly pads and focus mitts) for training. If participants wish to purchase their own boxing gloves, they should be 8 - 12 oz. fully padded gloves. No Mixed Martial Arts gloves and/or gloves with open fingers and/or thumbs will be permitted. What is the commitment of the participants? Since skill development in Muay Thai is progressive, participants should commit to attending all 4 sessions. In order to progress from week to week and to ensure safety, participants must attend the previous session(s). For example, if a participant misses session 2, they will not be permitted to attend session 3 and 4. All participants must sign the Contract of Safety and Responsibility as a commitment to upholding the core values of Muay Thai and safe practices. Chris and Elaine reserve the right to expel participants who they deem are in violation of this contract. Information Source: Connie Jakab | eventbrite
