Liz Pelly – Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify (in convo w/ Damon Krukowski) | SPACE
May 18, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Portland
Journalist Liz Pelly discusses her book
Mood Machine
, an unsparing investigation into Spotify’s origins and influence on music, weaving unprecedented reporting with incisive cultural criticism, illuminating how streaming is reshaping music for listeners and artists alike.
Pelly will be joined by Damon Krukowski of the band Damon & Naomi.
Drawing on over a hundred interviews with industry insiders, former Spotify employees, and musicians,
Mood Machine
takes us to the inner workings of today’s highly consolidated record business, showing what has changed as music has become increasingly playlisted, personalized, and autoplayed.
Building on her years of wide-ranging reporting on streaming, music journalist Liz Pelly details the consequences of the Spotify model by examining both sides of what the company calls its two-sided marketplace: the listeners who pay with their dollars and data, and the musicians who provide the material powering it all. The music business is notoriously opaque, but here Pelly lifts the veil on major stories like streaming services filling popular playlists with low-cost stock music and the rise of new payola-like practices.
For all of the inequities exacerbated by streaming, Pelly also finds hope in chronicling the artist-led fight for better models, pointing toward what must be done collectively to revalue music and create sustainable systems. A timely exploration of a company that has become synonymous with music,
Mood Machine
will change the way you think about and listen to music.
"Pelly has written a groundbreaking examination of the music-streaming giant Spotify and its effects on 21st-century music. . . . A provocative, insightful, disturbing, and well-researched indictment of Spotify, the music industry, and streaming platforms, which daily mine billions of data bits from listeners/viewers to maximize profits and churn out musical formulas. Highly recommended."
—
Library Journal
(starred review)
"A spirited debut. . . . Evocative prose and sharp analysis combine for a trenchant critique of the music streaming industry that calls for concrete reforms while asking bigger questions about “why universal access to music matters” and the cultural consequences of restricting its production and dissemination. The result is a perceptive assessment of the current musical landscape and an eye-opening glimpse into its possible future."
—
Publisher's Weekly
"A strong indictment to rouse consumers into considering just where our commitment to music is headed."
—
Kirkus Reviews
"The most important book about the music business in decades, a devastating indictment of its dominant digital platform, an urgent call to action for music lovers. Written crisply and reported bravely, Mood Machine reveals just how much of our culture we’ve handed over to one company, and what that means. Liz Pelly, with deep empathy for artists and zero tolerance for sociopathic tech-bro babble, is concerned not only about Spotify’s parsimonious compensation for performers, but about the way in which it has already distorted our very concept of what music is, and what it is for."
—Dan Charnas,
New York Times
bestselling and PEN award winning author of
Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, The Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm
and
The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop
“Here is the clearest and most thorough job of reporting-and-critique I've encountered on how Spotify, through a juncture of corporate interests, data science, surveillance, vibes theory, and cliché, has engineered a zombie impostor of musical culture. Liz Pelly helps you see and hear how it happened. Her work is an act of decency against degeneration.”
—Ben Ratliff, author of
Every Song Ever: Twenty Ways to Listen in an Age of Musical Plenty
“Mood Machine is so much more than a book about music streaming. Liz Pelly has painted a portrait of modern capitalism through the lens of Spotify, a mega-app that manages to encompass all the ways that Big Tech is both homogenizing and alienating, dulling our senses while offering the illusion of abundance. Spotify, in Pelly's hands, is a fun house mirror-world where our musical tastes and desires are warped to fit the needs of accumulation rather than art.”
—Sarah Jaffe, author of
From the Ashes
and
Work Won't Love You Back
“Do you remember the first song you streamed? Probably no more than you remember your first breath. Streaming and its main vehicle and commodifier, the Swedish company Spotify, have become so pervasive within music culture that its origins and impact are as hard to pin down as air. Liz Pelly's impeccably reported, persuasive book colors that air with detail and clarity, diligently and insightfully chronicling the 21st-century conquest of music lovers' souls. Mood Machine exhaustively explores the many aspects of Spotify's impact, from its tricky 'pro rata' economics to the pseudoscientific therapeutics of 'chill'; Pelly picks up every piece of the streaming puzzle and places it in perfect context. This book will intrigue the lay person, inform the artist, and cause music fans to think deeply about the hidden costs of making all those playlists.”
—Ann Powers, author of
Traveling: On the Path of Joni Mitchell
"Much has been said about the somewhat tense relationship between artists, listeners and streaming. But with Mood Machine, Liz Pelly has written the definitive breakdown of Spotify and its influence on the music industry. Anyone wanting to learn more about playlisting, and to understand why they like what they like, should buy this book."
—Marcus J. Moore, author of
High and Rising (A Book About De La Soul)
"We know intuitively that our relationship with music is changing - often for the worse. But to read how and why this relationship has broken down is devastating and infuriating. Liz Pelly lands this story on a hopeful note that will galvanize those of us who dream of a different future for the music industry. I couldn't put it down."
—Zoë Schiffer, author of
Extremely Hardcore: Inside Elon Musk's Twitter
"Liz Pelly writes with a reporter's instinct, a historian's reverence, a surgeon's precision, and a punk rocker's heart. Read this book, then joyfully go forth and work against everything its subject stands for.”

Portland
From director Sandi DuBowski’s (
Trembling Before G-D
, 2001) comes
SABBATH QUEEN
. Shot over 21 years, it follows Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie's epic journey as the dynastic heir of 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis including the Chief Rabbis of Israel. He is torn between accepting his ancestral destiny or following his heart to become a drag queen rebel, a queer father, and the founder of Lab/Shul - an everybody-friendly, experimental congregation.
As
SABBATH QUEEN
opens, Lau-Lavie is newly arrived in New York in the late 1990s, a young gay man declaring “Artists are the new rabbis” and appearing around the city in drag as Rebbetzin Hadassah Gross, the widow of six Hasidic rabbis (all from the same extended family).
As the years pass, Lau-Lavie embraces a range of creative spiritual endeavors including Storahtelling and Lab/Shul – until he shocks everyone with his decision to become a rabbi himself, studying in the Conservative tradition of Judaism.
SABBATH QUEEN
joins Amichai on a lifelong quest to creatively and radically reinvent religion and ritual, challenge patriarchy and supremacy, champion interfaith love. The film interrogates what Jewish survival means in a difficult rapidly changing 21st century.

May 22, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Portland
Intertwine Alliance partners and friends, we're excited to kick off a new series, Intertwine Connect, with a happy hour on Thursday, May 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Level Beer Brewery & Beer Garden!
Please join us for:
Mixing & mingling in Level Beer's lovely clubhouse. Don't miss this informal time to connect with fellow Intertwine Alliance partners and friends.
A short program at 5:30 p.m. with a hello from Intertwine Alliance board and staff and featured partner
Johnson Creek Watershed Council
.
Lively local band Deku will play in the greenhouse; feel free to move between our private area and the beautiful indoor & outdoor common areas, and to stay past our official 7 p.m. end time. Level Beer is open until 9 p.m.
The event is free and open to all. Level Beer's clubhouse and bathrooms are ADA accessible. Kids are welcome.
Let's launch Intertwine Connect in style! The quarterly series will feature happy hours, trivia nights and other similar fun activities to help us build community, network and stay connected.
Intertwine Summits
are wonderful, but they happen only every 18 months. We need more. Gatherings will be planned and hosted by our board of director's new small events committee, aka the party planning committee.
Many thanks to Level Beer for donating space. Please come ready to support this extraordinary small business by purchasing a beer, cider or non-alchoholic beverage, or snacks or dinner from one of four foodcarts on the premises. We suggest a $5 donation at registration to offset costs --but we'll gladly accept more! As with so many nonprofits, we operate on a very tight budget and can use all the support we can get.
Looking forward to seeing you on May 22! Questions? Ideas for the next Intertwine Connect event? Interested in being a featured partner at an upcoming gathering? Please email Intertwine Alliance Director Tara Wilkinson at tara@theintertwine.org.

Portland
Legendary musician Swamp Dogg has been described as “one of the great cult figures of 20th century American music” and “the soul genius time forgot.” He is a genuine eccentric responsible for some of the most unique rock-influenced R&B (and wildest album covers) ever made. Hidden away deep in suburban Los Angeles, Swamp Dogg, alongside housemates Moogstar and Guitar Shorty, has transformed his home into an artistic playground. Together, they navigate the tumultuous waves of the music industry, and forge a wonderfully bizarre and inspiring path across time and space. Amazing access to Swamp Dogg, along with incredible archival material, creates a fun, hilarious and unconventional film for a perfectly unconventional life.
Directed by Isaac Gale and Ryan Olson
Featuring Swamp Dogg, Alonzo Williams, Moogstar, Tom Kenny, Guitar Shorty, Mike Judge, Dr. Jeri Williams, Johnny Knoxville, Naeem Juwan, John Prine

Bodyweight 201: Hard Style Pullups & Abs
There are plenty of good reasons to master pullups. To negotiate obstacles while wearing a heavy kit… To build lats ready for a confrontation on the mat… Because pullup excellence highly correlates with low bodyfat…
Whatever your reason is, it must be important—which is why your pullups deserve to be done right. To put it bluntly, whatever passes for “pullups” at most gyms and playgrounds is a joke. If you are ready to stop impersonating pullups and to learn the real deal, the Bodyweight 201 workshop is for you. Learn:
The Hard Style Pullup—reverse engineered from gymnastics and martial arts for the greatest carryover to sports and hard living
The Hard Style Hanging Leg Raise—insanely strict and challenging, with a step-by-step progression
Hard Style Abs drills—to take punishment and to dish it out
Progressions, regressions, variations…
Military designed and tested pullup programming
Pull strong. Look the part.
Sign up and power to you!

A “miracle city.” A “sociological experiment.” A “municipal monstrosity.” A “nasty ghetto.”
During its short life span (1942-1948) Vanport--Oregon’s second largest city and the nation’s largest public housing project--drew national attention and conflicting opinions.
For the over 40,000 people who lived there, Vanport was simply their home.
When the Columbia River flooded in 1948, on Memorial Day, the entire city was erased from the map and much of Portland’s memory in a single day.
Through nearly a decade of collaboration with the Vanport community, Vanport Mosaic has established the largest collection of oral histories related to Vanport, ensuring the preservation and honor of one of Oregon's most pivotal historical communities
.
Through archival footage, historic photographs, and compelling first-person narratives,
Lost City, Living Memories
creates a rich and elaborate “mosaic” of the vibrant community that made up the city of Vanport, and commemorates the tragedy that displaced it.
NW Freedom Singers
are going to take us through Vanport and WWII to Albina and Dawson Park and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and on to Church and the heartbeat of Portland’s Black Community.
Performing tonight, along with Ron are Vanport descendant, Eldon "T” Jones on Saxophone and vocals, Tim Ribner on keyboard, and Antoinette Saunders, Rosie Lovings, Jeanine Wiggins, Letha McCleod, and Amber Cobb.

Beyond Vanport: Remembering Native North Portland –
Artwork by Peggy Ball-Morrill
Klamath/Modoc artist Peggy Ball-Morrill’s paintings portray a community nearly invisible in popular culture where representations of native people are often limited to Westerns or cartoons. The paintings remember a close-knit native community at a time when federal termination and relocation policies threatened Native survival. Peggy passed away in August of 2015.

May Modern Kintsugi Repair Workshop | Leaven Community Center
May 24, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Portland
Kintsugi
(金継ぎ,
gold joinery
) is the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics. Fractures are no longer weak points, but beautiful elements. This philosophy is often taught as embracing imperfections in our life, the beauty of human flaws.
During the 2.5-hour workshop, you will learn how to repair ceramics with the modern Kintsugi methods finishing the joints with gold powder. Bring a couple ceramic pieces. All materials will be provided to repair them. Tools are returned to us.
Workshop instructions:
Bring one or two damaged ceramics.
The material must be ceramic, pottery, or porcelain
. No glass or wood. A damaged family heirloom or items that are broken into numerous pieces would be challenging to attempt for the first time. Instead, bring something easier.
Items must be glazed, cracks must be within 5 pieces and chips must be within 1/2 inches. A few ceramic bowls will be available for purchase at the workshop. Items' original size must be within 12 inches. The larger and heavier, the more difficult. Decoration is recommended after all repairs have been made.
While the traditional Kintsugi requires skills, techniques, and time, this modern method is for all skill levels
18yo & up
!
All materials are included in the workshop fee. Bring a cardboard box or something similar that will allow you to carry your items home without touching the repaired parts.
This class will be taught by Emi Joyce, formerly a full-time bench jeweler and apparel designer, currently a kintsugi restorer and a natural dyer. You can learn more about her kintsugi work via Instagram, @modernkintsugirepairpdx
