RIBA+VitrA Building Empathy: Unity of Place | Royal Institute of British Architects
May 15, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Portland
How can architects design places that create a sense of place? In this panel discussion, you’ll hear from three leading voices in participatory design including Takeshi Hayatsu, Director of Hayatsu Architects; Lee Ivett, Head of the Grenfell-Baines Institute of Architecture; and Anna Mansfield, Director of Publica. Drawing on their own experiences and case studies, the panel will explore how empathy, craftsmanship, and community participation can shape lasting and inspiring spaces. You will gain insights into the importance of designing spaces that are not only functional but also emotionally resonant, creating a sense of belonging and pride. The 2025 RIBA + VitrA Talks Programme explores the power of design to create positive change in communities. This year’s theme, Building Empathy: Design for our time, highlights the role of architects in shaping environments that are accessible, meaningful, and responsive to the people who use them. The Panel:Takeshi Hayatsu, Director of Hayatsu Architects Takeshi Hayatsu is a Japanese architect practicing in London. He studied architecture at Musashino Art University in Tokyo and at the Architectural Association in London. He worked at David Chipperfield Architects, Haworth Tompkins and 6a architects before establishing his own practice Hayatsu Architects in 2017. Alongside his practice he is a senior lecturer and teaches postgraduate architecture studio at Kingston University, and an external examiner for MArch course at University of Westminster. He also conducts annual experimental building workshops in Japan and the UK with Grizedale Arts. He is a member of the Design Review Panel at Harrow Council. Anna Mansfield, Director of Publica Anna Mansfield is responsible for overseeing Publica’s projects and the strategic direction of their work and research. Anna has over 15 years of experience in urban design and architectural practice, both in the UK and internationally, and has held a senior position within the company since its establishment. Anna has played a key role in developing strong relationships with clients and collaborators, advising organisations from across the spectrums of architecture, development and planning, including the City of London, the City of Westminster, Transport for London and many of the UK’s leading developers. Anna has recently led major research projects on housing regeneration and renewal; the future potential of neighbourhood planning; child friendly cities and children’s independent mobility; and research for the National Infrastructure Commission on the integration of urban design and infrastructure. Lee Ivett, Head of the Grenfell-Baines Institute of Architecture Lee Ivett is an architect and Head of the Grenfell-Baines Institute of Architecture in Preston. His mode of practice is based around the establishment of durational projects that utilise acts of participatory making to conceive, test and establish new forms of community owned amenity and activity. Lee’s work has been published and exhibited nationally and internationally and he is currently building open these experiences by working with academic colleagues to establish a new live action research office and Master of Architecture studio called Other People’s Dreams. OPD engages in a critical and situated way with community organisations in the north west region to rethink the potential of people and place. They explore that which is often 'unseen' within architectural education; everyday life as experienced by everyday people, born and often made peripheral through birth, migration and circumstance. OPD proposes an alternative purpose for architecture and indeed architects, re-evaluating the role of an architect as facilitator for other people's dreams. Lead Image: British Museum welcome pavilion proposal by Hayatsu Architects RIBA + VitrA TalksA series of talks featuring emerging and established international architects delivered in partnership with VitrA Bathrooms, now in its seventh year. We think the best relationships are forged when we are comfortable, relaxed and free of pressure. Preferring instead to think of the evening as a casual night out where one can truly be themselves. We do not use traditional 'speed dating' offerings such as bells, whistles and name-tags. Instead we focus on creating an atmosphere conducive to meeting others; a great venue, a personable host and a staff to assist.
Upon registration, you'll be sent an email inviting you to login to your mobile ‘Smart-Card’. As the event begins, log-in to your scorecard and let the flirting begin. Don't fret about figuring out if the person is the one or the perfect person for you. Consider it the date before the date. If you choose someone and they chose you - it's a match. You will be given each others first name and email address. The rest is up to you.

Mystic Pulse: A Tantric Dance Journey | Good Medicine Collective
May 16, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Portland
Mystic Pulse: A Tantric Dance Journey
Step into a sacred space where myth meets movement, and your body becomes the temple of transformation.
We begin this two-hour journey gathered in circle, opening the space with the rich tapestry of Tantric mythology. Through storytelling, visualization, and subtle ritual, we invoke deities - not as distant symbols, but as reflections of our own wild hearts, fierce truths, and longing for union.
From there, we drop into the body with Tantric practices that weave breath, presence, and conscious connection. Through guided solo and partnered rituals we explore the dance of polarity, intimacy without agenda, and the beauty of being fully seen.
With our hearts and bodies open, we move into a wave of dance. The music becomes the myth - guiding us through the landscape of our emotions and inner worlds, and your body the storyteller. Amelia will weave an energetic soundscape that leaves you feeling delicious.
We close the evening in a warm, platonic cuddle puddle, a space of safe, nourishing rest where bodies can simply be—held, witnessed, and loved in their wholeness. Whether you're dancing through devotion, connecting through stillness, or just curious to explore Tantra beyond the clichés, this workshop offers a playful, profound portal back to the sacredness of your body and your being. No partner or experience necessary. Come as you are. Leave moved by love.
*Please bring something for the altar *
About your host:
When Amelia was a child, she swallowed a firefly. After a failed attempted to purge it, she spent many years in depression and apathy. After several psychedelic experiences as a young adult, she became aware of her lightning bug superpower and has since followed many paths up the mountain of healing. Whether vibrating others home to themselves through manual or movement therapies, she is a trusted guide in self-care and discovery by many walks of life.

Liz Pelly – Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify (in convo w/ Damon Krukowski) | SPACE
May 18, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Portland
Journalist Liz Pelly discusses her book
Mood Machine
, an unsparing investigation into Spotify’s origins and influence on music, weaving unprecedented reporting with incisive cultural criticism, illuminating how streaming is reshaping music for listeners and artists alike.
Pelly will be joined by Damon Krukowski of the band Damon & Naomi.
Drawing on over a hundred interviews with industry insiders, former Spotify employees, and musicians,
Mood Machine
takes us to the inner workings of today’s highly consolidated record business, showing what has changed as music has become increasingly playlisted, personalized, and autoplayed.
Building on her years of wide-ranging reporting on streaming, music journalist Liz Pelly details the consequences of the Spotify model by examining both sides of what the company calls its two-sided marketplace: the listeners who pay with their dollars and data, and the musicians who provide the material powering it all. The music business is notoriously opaque, but here Pelly lifts the veil on major stories like streaming services filling popular playlists with low-cost stock music and the rise of new payola-like practices.
For all of the inequities exacerbated by streaming, Pelly also finds hope in chronicling the artist-led fight for better models, pointing toward what must be done collectively to revalue music and create sustainable systems. A timely exploration of a company that has become synonymous with music,
Mood Machine
will change the way you think about and listen to music.
"Pelly has written a groundbreaking examination of the music-streaming giant Spotify and its effects on 21st-century music. . . . A provocative, insightful, disturbing, and well-researched indictment of Spotify, the music industry, and streaming platforms, which daily mine billions of data bits from listeners/viewers to maximize profits and churn out musical formulas. Highly recommended."
—
Library Journal
(starred review)
"A spirited debut. . . . Evocative prose and sharp analysis combine for a trenchant critique of the music streaming industry that calls for concrete reforms while asking bigger questions about “why universal access to music matters” and the cultural consequences of restricting its production and dissemination. The result is a perceptive assessment of the current musical landscape and an eye-opening glimpse into its possible future."
—
Publisher's Weekly
"A strong indictment to rouse consumers into considering just where our commitment to music is headed."
—
Kirkus Reviews
"The most important book about the music business in decades, a devastating indictment of its dominant digital platform, an urgent call to action for music lovers. Written crisply and reported bravely, Mood Machine reveals just how much of our culture we’ve handed over to one company, and what that means. Liz Pelly, with deep empathy for artists and zero tolerance for sociopathic tech-bro babble, is concerned not only about Spotify’s parsimonious compensation for performers, but about the way in which it has already distorted our very concept of what music is, and what it is for."
—Dan Charnas,
New York Times
bestselling and PEN award winning author of
Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, The Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm
and
The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop
“Here is the clearest and most thorough job of reporting-and-critique I've encountered on how Spotify, through a juncture of corporate interests, data science, surveillance, vibes theory, and cliché, has engineered a zombie impostor of musical culture. Liz Pelly helps you see and hear how it happened. Her work is an act of decency against degeneration.”
—Ben Ratliff, author of
Every Song Ever: Twenty Ways to Listen in an Age of Musical Plenty
“Mood Machine is so much more than a book about music streaming. Liz Pelly has painted a portrait of modern capitalism through the lens of Spotify, a mega-app that manages to encompass all the ways that Big Tech is both homogenizing and alienating, dulling our senses while offering the illusion of abundance. Spotify, in Pelly's hands, is a fun house mirror-world where our musical tastes and desires are warped to fit the needs of accumulation rather than art.”
—Sarah Jaffe, author of
From the Ashes
and
Work Won't Love You Back
“Do you remember the first song you streamed? Probably no more than you remember your first breath. Streaming and its main vehicle and commodifier, the Swedish company Spotify, have become so pervasive within music culture that its origins and impact are as hard to pin down as air. Liz Pelly's impeccably reported, persuasive book colors that air with detail and clarity, diligently and insightfully chronicling the 21st-century conquest of music lovers' souls. Mood Machine exhaustively explores the many aspects of Spotify's impact, from its tricky 'pro rata' economics to the pseudoscientific therapeutics of 'chill'; Pelly picks up every piece of the streaming puzzle and places it in perfect context. This book will intrigue the lay person, inform the artist, and cause music fans to think deeply about the hidden costs of making all those playlists.”
—Ann Powers, author of
Traveling: On the Path of Joni Mitchell
"Much has been said about the somewhat tense relationship between artists, listeners and streaming. But with Mood Machine, Liz Pelly has written the definitive breakdown of Spotify and its influence on the music industry. Anyone wanting to learn more about playlisting, and to understand why they like what they like, should buy this book."
—Marcus J. Moore, author of
High and Rising (A Book About De La Soul)
"We know intuitively that our relationship with music is changing - often for the worse. But to read how and why this relationship has broken down is devastating and infuriating. Liz Pelly lands this story on a hopeful note that will galvanize those of us who dream of a different future for the music industry. I couldn't put it down."
—Zoë Schiffer, author of
Extremely Hardcore: Inside Elon Musk's Twitter
"Liz Pelly writes with a reporter's instinct, a historian's reverence, a surgeon's precision, and a punk rocker's heart. Read this book, then joyfully go forth and work against everything its subject stands for.”
