Ex Fundamentis: The Evolution of Façade Masonry in Pompeii | PSU Art Building

May 5, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Portland
Arts
Fine Art
Join us for Ex Fundamentis: The Evolution of Façade Masonry in Pompeii, a lecture by M. Taylor Lauritsen, PhD, Adjunct Assistant Professor in Art History at Portland State University. This talk will explore the development of residential and commercial façade design in Pompeii from the late 3rd century BC to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Over this period, standardized architectural techniques employed in the Samnite era were replaced by a range of materials and construction methods, a process influenced both by practical considerations and evolving aesthetic tastes. This local transition reflects broader shifts in Roman architectural practice and urban development during the Late Republic and early Imperial period. This talk is funded through the generosity of the Mary Ausplund Tooze Endowed Visiting Professor of Islamic + Ancient Art Fund and the PSU Art History program. Portland
Cultural Experiences
Welcome to " Navigating Complex Change; Harnessing Human Connection in Turbulent Times " ! As coaches, we know that transformation happens through connection. In a world that’s shifting faster than ever, our ability to foster meaningful relationships is more essential than any strategy or tool. In this one day session, we’ll explore how human connection remains the anchor in times of uncertainty—helping us navigate change, support our clients, and grow as professionals. We’re bringing this conversation to life with thought-provoking presentations, hands-on discussions, and an engaging speaker lineup - download the full agenda here. Morning Keynote Cathy Bernatt, Executive Coach, MCC, IAC Professional Facilitator, O.D. Consultant Transforming Triggers: How Irritation Became the Doorway to Discovery What if a client’s behavior triggers something within us—not because of them, but because of our own unresolved issues? This interactive session invites coaches to explore that question through a powerful personal story, guided inner work, and community dialogue. By turning triggers into opportunities for self-awareness and growth, coaches can build deeper connections, enhance emotional intelligence, and improve client outcomes. Morning Breakout Sessions Track 1: Grow Self with Elia Paz, Set Life-serving Boundaries that Call Us Into Collaboration and Community Track 2: Grow Tools with Denise Gaskin, AIC (AI in coaching) - Will it Replace the Human Connection in Coaching? Track 3: Grow Impact with Dr. Richard Osibanjo, T he Power of Influence: Building Meaningful Connections in a Polarized World Afternoon Breakout Sessions Track 1: Grow Self with Cai Delumpa and Monique Breault, Coaching from the Inside Out Track 2: Grow Tools with Tiffany Grimes, Why Metacognition Matters Track 3: Grow Impact with Nir Megnazi, Smart But Stuck: How Avoiding Emotions Limits Leaders Afternoon Keynote Jennie Antolak, MCC Connected Individuality: The Urgent Case for Reimagining Autonomy and Community In a world that craves connection, we’ve paradoxically drifted further apart—swapping collaboration for convenience, teamwork for transaction, and human interaction for digital exchanges. The result? Record-high burnout, disengagement, and isolation. This presentation challenges the outdated belief that autonomy and community are opposing forces. Instead, "Connected Individuality" provides a new model—one that empowers people to own their unique strengths while co-creating, contributing, and thriving within the collective. Magical Transformation: Turning Cut Paper into Works of Art | Myriad Antiques

Craft
Curator&Maker presents renowned ceramicist and champion of makers Emma Bridgewater in conversation with collage artist Kate Black and maker of ‘plants for shade’ crafted from hand-marbled cut paper Georgia Doherty as part of its ‘As You Like It’ show featuring the work of 10 British designers and makers. The collection is inspired by Shakespeare’s play ‘As you like it’, set in the natural beauty of the Forest of Arden. The works have been inspired by lying with one’s lover under the Greenwood tree, sweethearts walking through unripe green cornfields, birds singing as they build their nests in the hedgerows, and the crowning glories of the outpouring of flowers and blossom. A celebration of new life, fecundity and hope. --- Emma Bridgewater, internationally renowned ceramicist, has long supported British-made design and craft, playing a major role in reviving the ceramics industry in Stoke-on-Trent. Kate Black is a collagist who creates imagery in response to objects and events, inspired by social history, artefacts and artworks found in museum and gallery collections. For Curator&Maker Kate is using the discipline of dust covers from old books, which in themselves have a history, and then has created collages carefully laid out on top, depicting British hedgerow birds in their natural habitat to evoke our theme of Shakespeare’s ‘As you Like it,’ with birds singing as they build their nests in the hedgerows, and the crowning glories of the outpouring of flowers and blossom. These specially commissioned works will be a limited edition. Georgia Doherty creates beautiful hand-cut paper flowers and leaves which she hand-paints and marbles and then magically arranges on hand-made stems in individual antique flowerpots and beautiful recycled containers to create cheery perennial ‘Plants For Shade’ – conversation pieces that need no pruning or watering. Her creations for this collection take inspiration from the plants and flowers in Shakespeare’s imagined bucolic setting. --- Tickets are £10 each. All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Norfolk Churches Trust, a charity close to Emma's heart. The Norfolk Churches Trust was founded in 1976 to protect churches, chapels and meeting houses of all Christian denominations in the county of Norfolk and Diocese of Norwich by offering support through advice and grants. As a charity, the Trust is entirely dependant on the generosity of our many Friends and donors who do so much to support our work. Every donation goes directly towards grants for urgent church repairs. https://norfolkchurchestrust.org.uk/ Information Source: Curator&Maker | eventbrite

Elissa Altman's 'Permission' with Gibson Fay-Leblanc | Mechanics' Hall

May 8, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED

Literary Arts
Who am I to tell my story? And how can we grant ourselves permission to write the stories we’re compelled to tell when we've been told we shouldn't? Without fail, almost every writer—new or experienced—has faced dire questions of permission and story ownership: there is something that they want to write about, that they need to write about. Yet: they can’t. They have been warned not to. They might be paralyzed with shame, threatened with shunning, chastened into silence. Even if what they need to write about has defined them and their worldviews. But what if they did? What if you did? After writing three critically-acclaimed memoirs and a decade of teaching memoir workshops at every level, Elissa Altman has helped students face the elephant in every writer’s room: how to craft the stories that are most vital to them despite the voices that have told them not to. Permission is a master course, not only on how to craft memoir, but how to begin and keep going when you’ve been told you can’t, and how to give yourself permission to transcend the fear that keeps vital stories from being written. We are the storytelling species; this book will inspire and guide all creatives to a place of transformation, of freedom from the constraints of shame and fear in all their forms, and to the understanding and recognition of the ethics of story-making, art-making, truth-telling, and creative soul-saving. Thursday, May 8 at 7:00 PM (doors 6:30 PM), approximately 75 minutes with an audience Q&A. Presented by Mechanics' Hall , PRINT: A Bookstore , & The Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance . ABOUT THE AUTHORS Elissa Altman is the award-winning author of the memoirs Motherland , Treyf , and Poor Man’s Feast , and the bestselling essay substack of the same name. A longtime editor, she has been a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award, Connecticut Book Award, Maine Literary Award, and the Frank McCourt Memoir Prize, and her work has appeared in publications including Orion , The Bitter Southerner , On Being, O: The Oprah Magazine , LitHub, the Wall Street Journal , The Guardian , and the Washington Post , where her column, “Feeding My Mother,” ran for a year. Altman writes and speaks widely on the intersection of permission, storytelling, and creativity, and has appeared live on the TEDx stage and at the Public Theater in New York. She teaches the craft of memoir at Fine Arts Work Center, Maine Writers & Publishers, Kripalu, Truro Center for the Arts, Rutgers Community Writing Workshop, and beyond, and lives in Connecticut with her wife, book designer Susan Turner. Gibson Fay-LeBlanc ’s first collection of poems, Death of a Ventriloquist, won the Vassar Miller Prize and was featured by Poets & Writers as one of a dozen debut collections to watch. His second book, Deke Dangle Dive , was published by CavanKerry Press in 2021. Gibson’s poems have appeared in magazines including The New Republic, Tin House, Narrative, Poetry Northwest, and Orion. With graduate degrees from UC Berkeley and Columbia University, Gibson has taught writing at conferences, schools and universities including Fordham, Haystack, and University of Southern Maine, and helped lead community arts organizations including The Telling Room, SPACE Gallery, and Hewnoaks. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance and lives in Portland with his family. A Band Of Brother s, the all-star Allman Brothers Tribute act ft. members of Dickey Betts & Great Southern, Dub Apocalypse, Reckoners and more, make their live debut at Bayside Bowl on May 9, 2025. The show is all-ages. About A Band Of Brothers: ( ABandOfBrothersABB.com ) "A Band Of Brothers" isn't just an Allman Brothers tribute band; they're a powerhouse, uniting the top-tier talent of the East Coast. The brainchild of ace Boston guitarists Ryan Taylor and Johnny Trama, this collective, more than a mere homage, harness the Allman Brothers tradition as a vehicle to bring a unique and exciting experience every night. Matt Zeiner began his professional music career touring with Matt "Guitar" Murphy, who exposed him to a fusion of blues and jazz. His career took a significant turn in 2000 when Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band recruited him as a keyboardist and vocalist, leading to a fruitful collaboration and tour. Zeiner's own songwriting flourished during this time, contributing notably to the band's repertoire. After four years touring, he returned home, focused on original material, and formed his own band. They achieved recognition with their 2007 release, "Live on a Summer Night," and continued to evolve through collaborations with artists like Melvin Sparks and Jeff Pevar. Zeiner's band has since been working on an ambitious new album, showcasing his ability to craft infectious melodies with tight, dynamic arrangements across a range of soul, R&B, and rock genres. Johnny Trama on guitar conjures up riffs and rhythms that speak volumes. His journey through the realms of rock, soul, and blues, playing with icons like Bettye LaVette and Jesse Dee, has armed him with a mystical musical prowess. Jesse Williams on bass has played with everyone from Duke Robillard, Louis Walker to North Mississippi Allstars. Tom Arey behind the drums has played with artists like Peter Wolf’s Midnight Travelers. Brendan Tommaney on percussion has played with groups like Pink Talking Fish, Tommaney and brings a jazz-infused sensibility that adds depth and dimension to the band's sound. How to Disappear (Mobius) is bassist Colin Greenwood's stunning portrait of Radiohead in his own photographs. Two decades in the making, he takes us on a journey into the heart of the 21st century's most influential band, a maverick collective who have vastly broadened our musical landscape while they dominate and distort it. On stage, backstage, in the rehearsal room, behind the scenes, on tour, at work, and at play, Colin's photographs, and the stories and memories they evoke for him in his accompanying text, form an intimate portrait of the musical and cultural iconoclasts as they travel through ‘our middle years: all the joy and doubt and confidence and uncertainty we would oscillate between.’ Please note : This is a ticketed event. Tickets include admission to the signing line, as well as one hardcover copy of How to Disappear . Tickets may be purchased at eventbrite.com. Books distributed at event. Greenwood will only sign copies of his new book (no records or other memorabilia). Information Source: Powell's Books | eventbrite

Queer Devotion: Liberating Your Spiritual Practice *In-Person + Digital* | Seagrape Apothecary

May 10, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Portland
Cultural Experiences
A spiritual practice can be an intensely powerful and affirming thing, but for many LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, it is instead a frustrating and alienating one. When religious institutions don’t want us and modern alternative spiritualities repeat the same tired gender essentialist norms, where do we turn for a vibrant and deeply felt spiritual practice that includes and celebrates us? We do what queers have always done with community and culture: we build our own. In this 2 hour hybrid workshop, we will . . . Create an affirming, inspirational, and supportive devotional practice that uplifts us in our queer entirety Connect to the divine queer in existing gods, goddesses, and goddexes of history, in our revered transcestors and ancestors of our queer lineage, and in ourselves Queer the idea of deity by looking to figures of folklore, myth, and legend for creating new goddexes and new, queer parables Liberate our devotional practice by asking what it means not only to be devoted to a queer deity, but to devoted queerly Offer practical starting places for getting to know your queer goddexes through queer devotion Spirituality, like gender, is intensely subjective and experiential. In the nature of the queer spirit, this class does not aim to prescribe one single way to have a queer spiritual practice, but instead to crack open the myriad possibilities for you to build your own, personal practice of self-defined and self-directed queer devotion. In preparation for the workshop, please gather the following items: Pen and paper or a journal Snacks and drinks for nourishment! Anything else you need to feel cozy & present PS: Want more from Charlie Claire? Check out their Queer Devotion: Book Release Party at Seagrape on Tuesday May 20th! For those attending IN PERSON: We'll be gathering together at Seagrape Apothecary from 6 :00 to 8 :00 PM. Please arrive a little early to get settled in. Cultural Experiences
Join us for a guided bird walk around Chesil Beach and Fleet Lagoon and enjoy a hot drink and a slice of cake from the Pebble Pig Cafe afterwards. Chesil Beach and Fleet Lagoon are internationally important areas for nature conservation, supporting a great diversity of wildlife and their associated habitats. We will aim to spot as many species of birds as possible and following a falling tide, offers the best chance to see many of our waders and we will keep our eyes open for some of our spring visitors including little tern and wheatear. There will be plenty of time to ask questions and more information about the nature reserve will be given throughout the walk. The walk will start 09:30 and will last for approximately 1.5 hours. Please aim to arrive 5-10 minutes before the start time. After the walk, enjoy a hot drink and a piece of cake from the Pebble Pig Cafe, which is included in the ticket price. Please bring with you binoculars and if you have a telescope, that may be useful too. We do have a very limited number of binoculars to borrow and there will also be use of a telescope. This event is suitable for beginners to birdwatching and for families, but all children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Sturdy footwear (eg walking boots) is recommended as we will be going over some uneven ground, and as the site is fairly exposed, please bring with you plenty of warm clothing and waterproofs just in case! There is a large pay and display car park (Chesil Beach Pay & Display) next to the Wild Chesil Centre. Please note, parking charges are not included in the event ticket cost. If coming by public transport, the number 1 bus runs regularly between Weymouth and Portland. If travelling from Weymouth direction the closest bus stop is Wyke Regis, opposite Ferrybridge and if travelling from Portland direction is Wyke Regis, Chesil Beach Holiday Park. It is then approximately a 10-15 minute walk to the centre. Photos © Angela Thomas Information Source: Dorset Wildlife Trust | eventbrite
