Belgrave

Dance
Masterclass: Sacred Steps This immersive masterclass offers a unique opportunity to explore the amalgamation of Kathak, contemporary dance, and the rich traditions of South Asian movement . Through Kesha's own dance methodology, participants will dive into the intricate world of rhythm and expression, of Kathak dance, whilst also embracing the fluidity and expressive qualities of contemporary dance. The class goes beyond technique, weaving in elements of Eastern philosophies such as mindfulness, balance, and the connection between body and spirit. The workshop will offer students to gain a deeper understanding of how movement transcends cultures, drawing from a blend of ancient traditions and modern sensibilities. The workshop intends for participants to expand their movement vocabulary but also develop their choreographic practise through a greater awareness of how universal movement narratives can come together to create a harmonious and transformative experience. Kesha Raithatha Kesha Raithatha is a dancer and choreographer who embodies Kathak and Contemporary movement. She creates work that is rich in detail and experimentally reconsiders contemporary South Asian dance. Her curiosity and exposure to a wide range of movement training informs and invigorates her dance-making vocabulary, and is passionate about exploring her dance a way which allows the viewer to have a surreal and transcendental experience, but also as a means to be a voice for the collective. Kesha is Workplace Artist at Place Theatre in London; Associate Artistic Director at Aakash Odedra Company, and also Curve Theatre Resident Creative since 2021. Habitat Advocate: Green Mulch - Using Native Plants as Groundcovers | 102 Chester St

Jun 7, 2025 (UTC-4)
Lancaster
Cultural Experiences
Join us for this special Water Week edition of our Habitat Advocate Series! Do you find yourself in a seasonal habit of spreading wood mulch in your garden beds to suppress weeds? In this interactive workshop, learn how to kick that habit to the curb and instead nurture a new land ethic of cultivating a layered landscape by integrating native groundcovers (“green or living mulch”) in your garden. Through mimicking natural landscapes in your home garden, you truly can experience the joys of stewarding your own mini nature preserve (don’t let anyone stop you from making your own DIY hiking trail too)! Participants will practice a hands-on to-scale plant layering technique that they can use for future planning of their home landscape. The Lancaster Conservancy has protected over 10,000 acres of natural lands, which are critically important to supporting biodiversity. Smaller patches of native habitats spread throughout urban landscapes are also essential to creating corridors of habitat – food and refuge – for wildlife. This is why we are offering our fall 2024 Habitat Advocate Certification program at Tec Centro in Lancaster City. The cost of the Habitat Advocate classes covers instructor fees. If the cost of this class is prohibitive, please reach out to Keith Williams, VP of Engagement and Education, at kwilliams@lancasterconservancy.org. Your Presenter Elyse Jurgen , owner of Waxwing EcoWorks Co. , is a community collaborator working to rebuild ecological literacy and biodiversity through hands-on ecological gardening experiences in South Central PA. She is certified as a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional and Ecological/Permaculture Designer, along with earning an Ecological Gardening Certification from Mt. Cuba Center. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Education, 7-12 Biology Teaching Certification, and participated in Cornell University’s Civic Ecology program. Elyse works alongside homeowners in a participatory approach to their gardening for wildlife needs, infusing educational opportunities during the design, installation, and stewarding process. She invites homeowners to deeply engage with their land to maximize its potential in enhancing human well-being and supporting dwindling wildlife populations. About this Class This course is open for general admission; there is no prerequisite required for this course . Learn more about Habitat Advocate classes and certification here . Attendees ages 16 and over are invited but must be accompanied by an adult if younger than 18. Refund/Cancellation Policies Refund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket, refund requests must be made at least two weeks before the event. Cancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine, with cancellation for severe weather made at the time of the event. Create a Unique Abstract Painting Based On Your Creative DNA! Spiritual Artist CJ Miller will guide you through a process of letting go of control and focusing on the experience of painting itself—allowing the beauty to emerge naturally rather than forcing an outcome. Using music and movement, you will create asemic marks as the foundation for your expressive spiritual painting. This workshop is designed to help you discover your unique Creative DNA—your individualized artistic language—by embracing spontaneity, intuition, and trust in the creative process. After a brief grounding exercise, you’ll practice making original asemic marks, first on your own and then in an engaging Asemic Repetitions exercise with a partner. This interactive approach not only helps you find marks that are distinctively yours but also fosters connection and collaboration. Next, you’ll use your unique marks to develop an expressive abstract painting, working on a 11 x 14" sheet of Bristol board with a variety of brush sizes. This class will train you to see the beauty in what’s unfolding , refining your composition by focusing on what is working. To close, CJ will walk you through his signature process of isolating a compelling section of your painting, helping you frame a finished piece that reflects your creative essence. $85. All supplies are included , along with a copy of The Spiritual Artist book. In order to have the best in one-on-one instruction, this workshop will be limited to 18 attendees. Every physical thing or piece of art is an idea or thought pattern first. As a Spiritual Artist, CJ focuses on spiritual processes that occur before the art is manifested by teaching self-awareness, contemplation and creative exercises that release the creator within anyone. CJ has presented to various arts organizations, including the Grapevine Art Project, the Texas Jewish Arts Association, the Visual Art League of Lewisville, Artisan Art Santa Fe, Unity Tustin California Spirit Group, Rockwall Arts League, the Visual Arts Guide of Frisco and many more.
