Can We Tax Our Way to a Better Denver? | The Denver Athletic Club

Jul 30, 2025 (UTC-6)
Denver
Conferences
Are you interested in ideas for what we could do to get more housing built in Denver and the Front Range? Have you wondered why our lively neighborhoods still contain vacant lots that sit unused for years? Do you wonder how we could better design our tax system to more fairly reward those who invest in our cities? Have you ever heard of Henry George, and wanted to learn more about how his ideas could still be applied today? If your answer to any of those questions is yes, this is the event for you! Co-sponsored by YIMBY Denver and the Progress and Poverty Institute, at this event you'll learn about the Land Value Tax (LVT), how it can jumpstart infill development, boost housing supply, rid our cities of empty lots and abandoned buildings -- and much more! After we share some drinks and finger food, Josie Faass and Stephen Hoskins from the Progress and Poverty Institute will explain what LVT is, why we should care about it, and how it would work, using Denver as an example. This will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with our panel of local experts & policymakers, including: Sarah Parady, At-Large Member of Denver City Council Member Luke Teater, Thrive Economics Representative Steve Woodrow Senator Nick Hinrichsen Don't miss what will definitely be the most stimulating discussion of property taxation and urban policy this year! Matthew and Elizabeth will be discussing their new novels together at our bookshop and signing books afterwards. Date: Thursday 31st July Time: 7pm Tickets: £5 (includes a glass of fizz or non-alcholic beverage) or £22 (includes a copy of either Matthew or Elizabeth's book) Nearest car park: White Horse Lane Book tickets in store or online If you would like a signed copy of either books but aren’t able to attend, do get in touch with us at maldonbooksltd@gmail.com About Matthew Plampin and 'These Wicked Devices' Rome, 1650. The streets are teeming as thousands of pilgrims flood in for the Holy Jubilee, but behind the gilded façade of the Vatican, power is unravelling. Donna Olimpia Maidalchini has long kept Pope Innocent X under her thumb, but as loyalties shift, her enemies close in. And her most dangerous opponents may be those she deems too weak to matter. Two destitute nuns arrive, fleeing the ruined city of Castro and each carrying secrets that could destroy them. Meanwhile, the assistant to the famed Spanish artist Diego Velázquez is drawn into a perilous conspiracy – one that could bring Italy to its knees, and against which his own desperate ambitions seem to count for nothing. As the sweltering summer heat rises, survival, not salvation, becomes the ultimate goal – and in this world of sin, saints almost never survive. Matthew Plampinis the author of several highly acclaimed historical novels, most recently Will and Tom and Mrs Whistler. He has a PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art and has worked as a lecturer, tour guide and children's author. He lives in London with his wife and son. About Elizabeth Fremantle and 'Sinners' A young noblewoman accused of murder, awaits execution. Imprisoned in the Corte Savella, she has captured the hearts and sympathy of all Rome... This is the true and tragic tale of Beatrice Cenci. Murder most foul or vengeance most just?Helpless victim or resolute heroine? Rome, 1599. Beatrice yearns to escape the clutches of her abusive father and determined to find a way back to Rome, enlists the help of Olimpio, the castle’s keeper. Soon the love that grows between them will transform Beatrice’s fortunes, for better and for worse... History has sold her short. She is no doe-eyed victim of her father’s brutality, nor the cunning murderer who plotted her father’s demise. No, this Beatrice - a woman pregnant by her lover, incarcerated in a remote castle by her father, and brim-full of white-hot rage - is both innocent and guilty, saint and sinner. And she will stand tall in the face of the violence of men, no matter the cost. Elizabeth Fremantle is the critically acclaimed author of four Tudor historical novels: Firebrand (formerly Queen’s Gambit), Sisters of Treason, Watch the Lady and The Girl in the Glass Tower. As E.C. Fremantle she has written two historical thrillers: The Poison Bed and The Honey and the Sting. Her most recent novel, Disobedient, is a feminist retelling of the life of seventeenth-century Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi. She lives in London. IN-HOME ART LESSONS - $40 /Hr Art Teacher -- Teaching Drawing & Painting K-7 I am offering In-Home Art Lessons for Students between the Ages 5 to 12 yrs old (Grades K-7). I have two years of teaching experience with Young Rembrandts and Peaceful Art Studio. I am a quirky, fun, and creative art teacher, and I love working with children to develop their abilities through fundamental drawing steps. Teaching Approach: • I am skilled at educating elementary school students in grades K-6 basic drawing and coloring techniques, and encouraging children to express their imagination and creative abilities. • I instruct children to think about color, composition, balance, line, and shape objectively. • I motivate and encourage students to stay focused on improving their artistic skills. I provide all art materials including, markers, paints, pencils, erasers, pencil crayons, paper, and inspirational references. Students can select any image for inspiration, such as unicorns, dogs, cats, superheros, castles, princesses, etc. I often times bring many reference images to choose from. I have been successful in teaching art to students in the past and I am happy to be offering art lessons this year. After purchase each parent will be contacted to set up the time and date of the art class for your child :) Information Source: Nicole Melnicky | eventbrite
