Geoff Dyer, author of 'The Colour Of Memory', 'The Last Days Of Roger Federer' & 'Yoga For People Who Can't Be Bothered To Do It', amongst many others, is coming to Waterstones Brighton for the launch of his latest book, 'Homework: A Memoir'. What a story. What a great story." It is such a privilege to have Geoff Dyer, one of our most observant, witty & original writers, launching 'Homework' at Waterstones Brighton and we hope you will join us for what is going to be a very special evening. The end of the 19th Century was an era of technological wonder. Alongside electricity, the telephone and recorded sound, three vision technologies became very popular - photography, the magic lantern and film. Brighton & Hove emerged as a centre for all of these marvels. The sea-going electric car made its way through the sea, photographic studios lined King’s Road, a film studio was erected in Hove and lantern and film shows were screened in the theatres, music halls and on the piers. This talk introduces these wonders and looks at those first films to be made and seen in Brighton from 1895.Dr Frank Gray is an early film historian, a curator of film exhibitions for Brighton & Hove Museums, the co-founder of Cinecity (the Brighton Film Festival) and the retired Director of Screen Archive South East at the University of Brighton. It collects, preserves and shares films made in Brighton & Hove and the region and its collection can be viewed at: screenarchive.brighton.ac.ukFrame still from James Williamson’s ‘A Big Swallow’, Hove, 1901 (image credit: BFI/SASE) Information Source: West Pier Trust | eventbrite

Paint your own Large Abstract Painting workshop in Brighton | Lawrence Art Studio

Jun 1, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Arts
Painting
This isn’t a typical painting adult art class in Brighton. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach. In this workshop we will do things differently: The main tool we will be using is not the brush. It’s our mind - free from limitations. We will paint intuitively! Spontaneously to the music, allowing the paint to evolve and reveal itself freely into an explosion of colours, patterns, marks, shapes, texture on the canvas. We will paint big! Big brush movements, a bold colour pallet and even the fingers. The intention is to let go of any expectations. We will get messy! This is not about making pretty things. It’s rare opportunity to let go of perfectionism and experiment with a wide range of art materials (acrylic, watercolours, pastels, chalk etc) to free our inner artist and find our creative voice in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will get creative! Art has no limitations, we use every day tools: window squeegee, credit card, bubble wrap, fork, scraper, feather, chopstick, ANYTHING to get our imagination going! Suddenly the concept of “painting” expands! It’s a painting wonderland full of possibilities. We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs! This dynamic and creative free-flow painting style will move us through past fears, creative blocks and self-doubt into joy and freedom! We will express ourselves! By opening our mind and listening to our heart, we can express our soul without boundaries or judgments. While experimenting with painting, we will build a relationship with who we are, reconnect to our inner child and fully express ourselves including the wisdom that is forever inside us. There is such freedom and joy in this! Who is this class for? This is a safe space for anyone! Even those who think they aren’t creative or can’t paint or draw. Also, this is a great opportunity for creative types who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in a while but are longing to express themselves through art. We can play and feel like a kid again without worrying about the end result. Nobody will judge what we create together. We are all on a journey to find our inner artist. The people who come to this class are from all walks of life: freelancers, entrepreneurs, website designers, yoga teachers, success coaches, parents….whatever! This could be fun and creative way to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or any other occasion (corporate team building) in Brighton, perfect Xmas gift too. What to expect on the day? Through fun, guided group and individual exercises we’ll explore wide range of art materials, experiment with an unconventional tools and try many abstract painting techniques including layering, mark making, texture. After a delicious lunch together, you will have time to develop your own intuitive painting on large canvas which you will take home with you at the end of the workshop. Date: Sunday 1st June Time: 10am till 4pm Venue: West Hove Lawrence Art Studio, 16 Kingsthorpe Rd, Brighton and Hove, Hove BN3 5HR Price: £250 (including all art materials + large canvas + lunch ) What’s included: 1 x Large Canvas (80x100cm or bigger, deep edge)Art Materials: acrylic paint, watercolours, spray paints, pastels, gesso and more… (you’re welcome to bring your own materials too)A selection of Brushes, texture & marking tools, apron and everything else you’ll need to create your one-of-the kind abstractLive group demonstration of abstract painting techniques and plenty of 1:1 guidanceProfessional Lawrence Art Studio Brighton and Hove Susex UKDelicious vegetarian lunchRefreshment: tea, coffee, biscuits & fruitsAll day event, places are limited to 10 participantsCan’t make this date? Great coffee and loose-leaf tea available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that. You can stay until we open to the general public at 9.30am. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £10 (including VAT) and in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. Feel free to bring a snack with you, so long as it's not smelly! The local bakery opposite opens at 8am ish if you want to grab a pastry from them. If you're using a laptop, please have it fully charged for your writing session as we only have one plug socket. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin involved and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry. Following a highly successful tour in 2024, Ballet Central returns in 2025 with a brand-new programme of classical ballet and contemporary dance. The repertoire includes Frederick Ashton’s miniature masterpiece Foyer de danse (1932) . Animating Edgar Degas’ iconic paintings and pastels of Paris Opera Ballet dancers, this will be the first staging of the ballet in over 90 years, following its recreation by Ursula Hageli for The Frederick Ashton Foundation. Principal Character Artist of The Royal Ballet, Kristen McNally, presents a vibrant modern ballet with a glorious new musical composition by Central’s Tabor Music Director, Philip Feeney. FEAST allows the audience to catch a glimpse of a colourful community where conversation is punctuated and interactions explode with character. In contrast, Ballet Central presents contemporary works by Dickson Mbi and Thick & Tight. Thick & Tight’s theatrical work Keeping Up with the Apocalypse will combine dance, theatre and mime. The piece is a meditation on greed, vanity and the absurdity of a species bringing about its own undoing . Dickson Mbi's work depicts the energetic ambition and perseverance required to pave new pathways in dance theatre and performance. Drawing from the Earth's vibrations and warmth, this piece explores the practices of ritual and shared human experience. Receive all Ballet Central announcements by subscribing to our newsletter .
