We welcome the respected landscape painter Hester Berry to the studio for an accessible and well-structured class weekend course, focusing on painting landscape in oil paints. This course is ideal for beginners who want to learn how to approach painting landscapes in oils, as well as more experienced painters who are looking to learn from Hester.       What to Expect   Day 1: Following an introductory talk we will head go outside to draw near to the studio (weather permitting) followed by a discussion of tone and short demonstration. You will then have the opportunity to begin your own painting from your own reference material under Hester’s guidance while Hester works on an ongoing demonstration piece.   Day 2: We will look at colour and mark-making in more depth and you will be able to continue to work on your own paintings, with Hester’s support.   The workshop will run from 10am-5pm, with a 1-hour lunch break - you are welcome to bring a packed lunch, or to pop to the nearby Sainsbury’s, or a café on London Road. There will also be extra tea breaks throughout the day.     What you need to bring    Most materials will be provided, including oil paint, solvent, additional oil painting paper, palettes and palette knives. 'A Life Well Lived' - A series of Dialogue Retreat Days | Community Base, Queens Road, Brighton and Hove, Brighton, UK

Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
Cultural Experiences
A Life Well Lived - A series of Dialogue Retreat Days The Buddha’s teachings offer practical guidance on how to actively cultivate a life that leads towards greater freedom, wellbeing and happiness for ourselves and others. In this series of three daylong retreats, we will take time in silence and relational meditation (Insight Dialogue * ) to investigate the role that Sila (ethics), Samadhi (absorption) and Panna (wisdom) play in cultivating a life well lived. *Insight Dialogue (ID) is a relational meditation practice for developing awareness and wisdom. It is designed to help us awaken together and integrate our understanding of Dharma teachings in a direct and immediate way. Supported by six Insight Dialogue guidelines, we bring kind awareness right into the heart of speaking and listening, often in pairs. Establishing these guidelines helps us to deepen our meditation while contemplating the Dharma together, allowing for experiential insight into the teachings. ID supports the weaving of a vibrant community of Dharma friendship as we collaborate in the awakening process together. We meditate together, recognising and unbinding the relational knots that cause suffering in our lives. In ID practice we engage with the buddha's teachings experientially, accessing their relevance to our wider lives. Rosalie Dores is an Insight Dialogue Retreat Teacher. She has practiced meditation and yoga since 1992. Her dharma roots are within the Vipassana, Theravada, Insight Meditation traditions and Insight Dialogue. Rosalie is dedicated to offering teachings that engage at the interface between ancient wisdom and the challenges of our modern world. She recognises that Insight Dialogue addresses the urgent need for a meditative practice that incorporates the social and interpersonal domains of human experience as intrinsic to awakening. She co-teaches courses and workshops dedicated to raising awareness about climate and social justice. Kid's Watercolour @ Florence Road Farmers Market | One Church Brighton

Sep 13, 2025 (UTC+0)
Brighton and Hove
Arts
Painting
no workshop 19th Oct due to illness Where are we: 🌧️ When it's raining we are in the back of the Church. When you come in the main entrance, got straight forward and then go through the door to the right of the stage. We're in the blue room! ☀️ If it's sunny and the market stalls are outside - we'll be inside the main hall of the church at the back corner --------- What we do: Each week we have a new theme, we'll always be using watercolour & collage in some way. The colours we use are really bright and amazing - not those cheap dissapointing watercolours. Once you have paid in person, or bought a ticket on eventbrite, your child can stay at the table for however long they want & make as many things they want to (although I try to encourge them to finish each one before making 100! How to turn up: You can either book on Eventbrite, or turn up on the day and pay by cash or card. Turn up any time - early is less busy If the table is full when you turn up, you may just need to wait a little while before a space becomes free - which is why coming earlier is better! While you wait you can grab a coffee from the cafe, and there's a little play area for the kids next to the art table that they can be entertained with for a while. What ages can take part? Children under 4 need an adult to help them out. Who runs the workshop? Hi I'm Zara - I run multiple watercolour workshops every week in Waterstones on Northstreet and other venues around Brighton and East Sussex. Running workshops for children is a new venture for me and I've really enjoyed it so far! In the past I have volunteered with charities working with young children and I have previously worked in a secondary school with teens. In all of my workshops the participants get to learn something as well as experiment, which in itself is really improtant for learning - and most importantly having fun! REFUNDS: Unfortunately eventbrite takes a cut of the ticket event if the ticket is refunded. Which means I would be losing money meaning I'm unable to offer a full refund. So there is a choice between these things: 1) I can transfer your ticket to a different week of your choice 2) I can refund you but it will be a few quid and pence less! Refunds and transfers must be requested at least 12 hours before the event starts. WHAT'S ON Find out what workshops are on via my live calendar on my website!
