One of the remarkable achievements of Lafcadio Hearn is that his writings about Japan became loved and appreciated both by those far away in Europe and America who knew little about the country, and by Japanese readers who knew rather a lot. For all foreign correspondents, wherever they find themselves, striking a balance between emphases on the exotic to attract attention and the quotidian to provide real illumination, and being interpretative without being patronising, is harder than it might seem. This lecture, by the renowned author and journalist Bill Emmott, will explore the lessons from Hearn for subsequent writers about this fascinating but often hard to understand culture, and from others, in the century-and-a-quarter since, who have emulated his dual success. Biographical Note: Bill Emmott is a journalist and consultant best known for his thirteen years as Editor-in-Chief of The Economist in 1993-2006 as well as for serving as the publication's Bureau Chief in Tokyo from 1983 to 1986. The author of fourteen books, including in 1989 The Sun Also Sets: Why Japan Will Not be Number One, which became a bestseller in Japanese translation, he was chair of The Japan Society of the UK between 2019 and 2024, and in 2016 was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon by the Japanese government for services to UK-Japan Relations. Unusually, Emmott is also recognised for his journalism, books and films about Italy, as a result of which he writes regular columns for La Stampa as well as for two Japanese publications, Mainichi Shimbun and Nikkei Business. His latest books have included Japan's Far More Female Future in 2020 and Deterrence, Diplomacy and the Risk of Conflict over Taiwan, in 2024. A dual Irish and UK citizen, Bill is resident in Killiney, Co. Dublin, and, among other roles, is a trustee of the Chester Beatty Library. 'Think of an Irish wind that shakes the barley . Then think of the East!': How Lafcadio Hearn and W.B. Yeats mirrored Japan in Ireland. W.B. Yeats cited Lafcadio Hearn for his favourite definition of poetry — ‘There is something ghostly in all great art’. Hearn was a world-famous writer when Yeats started out as a poet. Hearn lectured on Yeats in Japan. They corresponded. They shared similar social backgrounds and a lifelong interest in folklore dating back to their Irish childhoods. Both produced their best mature work in collaboration with their wives. Hearn explained Japanese culture to the outside world and gave new life in English to Japanese ghost stories. Yeats turned the ghost stories underlying Noh theatre into a new form of Irish art. The parallels between them offer useful insights into their work, and their work offers useful insights into Japan and Ireland. Biographical Note: Seán Golden was Professor of East Asia Studies at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona until retirement. He organised Yeats on Asia. Asia on Yeats, an International Yeats Society Symposium, in Barcelona (2016). Editor and co-author of Yeats and Asia: Overviews and Case Studies (Cork University Press, 2020), he has published and spoken extensively on Yeats. Co-editor with Peter Fallon of Soft Day. A Miscellany of Contemporary Irish Literature, he has published in Ireland in Cyphers, The Crane Bag, The Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing, Force 10, The SHOp, and The Stinging Fly. Kate Ellis was born and brought up in Liverpool and studied drama in Manchester. She worked in a variety of jobs, none of which she particularly enjoyed, before discovering that writing crime fiction was what she’d wanted to do all along! Described by The Times as ‘a beguiling author who interweaves past and present’ she has written twenty eight novels featuring archaeology graduate, DI Wesley Peterson and five crime novels with a supernatural twist featuring DI Joe Plantagenet. She has also written a trilogy set in the aftermath of the First World War featuring Scotland Yard detective DI Albert Lincoln. Her latest Wesley Peterson novel, Coffin Island, was published in August 2024.
