FREE Shakespeare By the Lakes VI: Macbeth (Patrick White Lawns) | Patrick White Lawns (in front of National Library) Canberra
Feb 22, 2025 (UTC+10)ENDED

Shakespeare By the Lakes VI: Macbeth Join us for an unforgettable evening of live twilight theatre at Patrick White Lawns! This year, we're partnering with The Q to bring you Shakespeare's action-packed tragedy Macbeth. Patrick White Lawns will transform into the eerie beauty of the Scottish Highlands as the infamous witches weave their dark prophecies and Macbeth rises to power amidst a whirlwind of murder, secrets, and the occult, with a dynamic cast (and maybe a few audience members) who will bring the play to life. Gather your friends, pack a picnic, and strap in for a night of greed, ambition, and deception. Whether you’re a Shakespeare aficionado or new to the Bard, don’t miss this chance to experience Shakespeare’s shortest, sharpest, and bloodiest play like never before, as nature and theatre collide. As with all Lakespeare shows, we encourage audience members of all ages and love introducing younger audience members to the joys of watching Shakespeare. Parents should note that this production is faithful to the original text and contains some adult themes (battles, murder and the like). Lakespeare is an independent theatre company on a mission to make high-quality theatre accessible to Canberrans and beyond. Visit our webpage closer to show time for more information about the show, the cast and what we do. And don't forget to follow us on Facebook or Instagram. Even though this is a free event, its important that you register for tickets. Registration helps us to understand likely numbers. This helps our vendors and sponsors. Registration enables us to keep you informed regarding any new developments related to the performance. What can I bring into the event? Please bring sunscreen (daytime shows), a rug, friends, family, food and drink. A chair if you want to go in the chair zone. A blanket if it looks cold. We have vendors (more detail provided closer to the show), too, who can provide a range of sweet and savoury food options, coffee and alcohol. Show information 1. SBTL is an outdoor event and we all must adapt to the weather conditions. The show must go on (and usually does) unless there is a really severe weather forecast or event. So be prepared - there is no such thing as bad weather, there is only the wrong clothes. If we do need to cancel a show we'll contact you via the email you provide in your registration (and we also aim to keep you updated via our social media platforms). 2. Chairs are only allowed in designated areas. So everyone can see, chairs will necessarily be set back from the main playing area. 3. So everyone can see, umbrellas are not to be used during the performance. Patrons should use hooded rain jackets or ponchos. 4. Lakespeare reserves the right to add or remove performances, change venues and/or alter the start times of events. Of course, we only do this for good reasons and give you as much warning as possible.

Acro Yoga - 8 week Beginner's Course starting in March 2025 | Anya's Hall, Claremont
Mar 7, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
White
Welcome to the Acro Yoga Beginner's Course taking place in March- April! Join us for a fun and interactive in-person event starting on Fri Oct 11 2024 at 7:00 PM at Anya's Hall in Claremont. This course is perfect for those who are new to Acro Yoga and want to learn the basics in a supportive environment. Come and meet like-minded individuals while improving your strength, flexibility, and balance. Don't miss out on this opportunity to try something new and exciting! Sign up now to secure your spot. Book with a friend for a discount offer. What to expect from the course:
An AcroYoga class combines elements of yoga, acrobatics, and Thai massage to create a unique and playful practice that focuses on communication, trust, and connection between partners. Here's what you can generally expect from an AcroYoga class:
Warm-up: Like any physical practice, an AcroYoga class typically starts with a warm-up session to prepare your body for movement. This might include light stretching, breathing exercises, and joint mobility work.
Partner Work: AcroYoga is practiced with a partner or in small groups. You'll pair up with someone (or multiple people) to perform various poses and movements together. The class may include both static poses and dynamic flows.
Spotting and Safety:
Safety is a priority for us, and you will be given support and drills to start mastering your role as a spotter . This role is important in facilitating the practice and to prevent accidents or injuries. Spotters are responsible for ensuring that the flyer (the person being lifted or supported) is safe during poses and transitions.
Working with a spotter allows you to progress more effectively and safely, and therefore, have more fun in the process. Spotters can sometimes act as a guide especially when you're upside down or when the movement is initially super complicated.
Roles: We will be focusing in detail the two main roles during this course.
In AcroYoga, there are typically two primary roles:
Base: The person who provides the foundational support for the flyer. The base typically has most of their body on the ground and is responsible for lifting and balancing the flyer.
Flyer: The person who is lifted, balanced, or supported by the base. Flyers focus on maintaining balance and engaging their core and limbs to create beautiful and dynamic shapes.
Communication: Clear and effective communication is crucial in AcroYoga. You'll learn specific hand signals or verbal cues to communicate with each other.
We strive to structure our classes to cater for your comfort and safety to ensure you have the most enjoyable acroyoga journey with us.
We look forward to working with you soon! Lots of acro yoga love,
Anna & Eugéne

Unlike any other Kirtan we've been to! I'm no musician but found so much joy by just letting go into the songs and mantras! I experienced such an energy surge through my body and felt a deeper connection to everything. **
To be notified about future Oneder Kirtan events join the mailing list here: https://bit.ly/3XkOqBX This music provides a chance for us to transcend our human boundaries. It speaks to the core of us, reminding us that there truly is no separation and deep within we are all one. We sing world heart mantras from the sacred traditions of India, Polynesia, Western & Native America. The word mantra derives from Sanskrit, which is divided into “man” meaning mind and “tra” meaning to free from. Mantras are quite literally tools to free the mind. Kirtan digs into the heart’s deepest well to touch and be touched by the Divine Unifying Presence. Singing these powerful healing mantras together, we have the opportunity to merge with the sound and true essence of oneness & love that these rhythmic ancient songs open within us. 🌞 7:30 -9 pm. *Doors open at 7:15pm* 🌞 $15 Online $20 Door 🌞 Over 18 Event - We are asking that children please stay home or have babysitters so that mum and dad can get the most out of the evening. Ghosts and Ghouls: The Undead Imagination of Lafcadio Hearn | Farmleigh House & Estate
Mar 8, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
White
Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) is one of the most interesting, complex and entertaining writers ever to have been connected with Ireland. Born to a Greek mother and an Irish officer-surgeon in the British Army, he was brought up in Dublin from the ages of two to thirteen. From 1869 he established himself in journalism in the United States, and spent two years in Martinique before travelling to Japan in 1890 where he would spend the rest of his life. Although he crafted a timeless interpretation of Japan, it is for his Kwaidan, masterly translations of traditional Japanese ghost stories, that he is now best remembered. In this lecture, Hearn biographer, Paul Murray, will use a variety of media, audio-visual, audio recordings and PowerPoint to bring to life the thrilling world of ghosts and ghouls, vengeful wives, undead prostitutes and warriors intent on luring the unwary to their doom. He will link these stories to the nightmarish horror that visited him as a terrified young child on Upper Leeson Street, Dublin, and will place these great horror stories in the context of the exhibition which now brings them to life at Farmleigh. Biographical Note Paul Murray, a retired Irish Ambassador, is the author of biographies of Lafcadio Hearn (A Fantastic Journey, 1994) and Bram Stoker (Shadow of Dracula: A Life of Bram Stoker, 2004). He edited Lafcadio Hearn: Japanese Ghost Stories for Penguin Classics (2019), one of three anthologies of Hearn’s horror writings that he has published. He contributed recently to Gibbet Hill, a re-publication of a “lost” Bram Stoker short story (2024). This talk is presented by the OPW in support of the Farmleigh Gallery exhibition Kwaidan - Encounters with Lafcadio Hearn, which runs until Sunday 24th August, and as part of the Farmleigh House cultural programme for 2025. www.kwaidanexhibition.com www.farmleigh.ie
