The main altar base of Zhongshan Grottoes features three groups of 14 large stone sculptures, with the principal Buddha statues representing Sakyamuni as the Buddhas of Three Periods - past, present, and future. The Sakyamuni statue, standing 3.54 meters tall, was carved directly from the rock and seamlessly integrated with the altar base. In front of the altar stand Manjusri Bodhisattva riding a lion and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva riding a white elephant. Sakyamuni sits in full lotus position on a waisted Sumeru throne adorned with upward-facing lotus petals. Flanking Sakyamuni are his two principal disciples: the elder Mahakasyapa and the younger Ananda, both standing on lotus pedestals and measuring 2.5 meters in height. The eastern and western ends of the altar each feature an attendant Bodhisattva. The altar is surrounded by eight square stone pillars (1m×1m×5m) that connect the floor to the ceiling, originally left as support structures during the cave's excavation. Every surface - the pillars and all four walls - is completely covered with multiple layers of Buddhist-themed relief carvings, leaving no empty space.

Zhongshan Grottoes are located 15km outside of Zichang City, Yan'an, Shaanxi Province. The weather in northern Shaanxi is dry and cold in winter. It has just snowed and the mountains are covered with white snow. The Zhongshan Grottoes were excavated in the fourth year of Zhiping in the Northern Song Dynasty (1067) and were built along the mountain, facing north and south, with a typical vertical axis layout. Driving from the highway towards the Zhongshan Grottoes, you can see the stone tower on the top of Zhongshan Mountain from afar, which means that the Zhongshan Grottoes are right at its foot. Zhongshan Grottoes, located 15 kilometers west of Zichang County, Shaanxi Province, also known as Wanfo Rock, Puji Temple, Dapuji Zen Temple, Shigong Temple. It was first built during the Taihe period of the Jin Dynasty (366-370 AD). After more than a thousand years of construction, the entire grottoes were built along the mountain, connecting to the Qingfeng Mingyue Opera Tower in the east, overlooking the Xiuyan River in the south, and the ancient city of Anding in the west, which is a must-pass route for the northern route of the Silk Road in China. Zhongshan Grottoes are an important birthplace of Buddhism in Northwest China. The scale of the grottoes is magnificent and spectacular, with incense burning throughout the ages, known as a "paradise on earth". In 1988, it was announced by the State Council as a "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit". Its plan is rectangular, 16.4 meters wide, 9.5 meters deep and 5.5 meters high. A large rectangular Buddhist altar was carved in the center of the cave.
