Xingning Travel Notes: A small town with hidden charm and time-honored beauty
When my feet set foot on the land of Xingning, it was as if I was gently opening an ancient and thick history book. Every page was densely written with memories of the past. Every corner of the city concealed a unique charm that had been accumulated over the years. This small city located in the northeast of Guangdong has none of the hustle and bustle of big cities, but with its unique cultural customs and picturesque natural scenery, it has quietly outlined an indelible and wonderful journey in my memory.
When you first arrive in Xingning, you must visit the Xihewan Hakka Township Cultural Tourism Industrial Park. As soon as you step into the park, the unique Hakka walled house architectural style will catch your eye. The tall and majestic walled houses are built along the mountainside, with layers upon layers of buildings, one after another. From a distance, they look like a giant, winding and entrenched dragon, with extraordinary momentum. The green tiles and yellow walls emit a soft and cozy color under the caress of the warm sun, quietly telling the long migration story of the Hakka people and the tenacious spirit in their bones. Walking into the Weilong House, you will see exquisite carved beams and painted buildings. The lines of the wood carvings are smooth and delicate, as if living things will jump out at any time; the stone carvings are lifelike, simple and elegant; the paintings are brightly colored and delicately brushed, and every detail is full of the wisdom and endless ingenuity of our ancestors. Here, you can also enjoy wonderful Hakka folk performances. When dancing the dragon and lion, the performers are agile and nimble, the colorful dragons tumble, the auspicious lions leap, and the scene is very lively. The Hakka folk songs are melodious, and the simple and pure local accent seems to have the magic of traveling through time and space, showing the unique charm of Hakka culture to the fullest.
Shenguang Mountain in Xingning is also a great place to check in that cannot be missed. Looking up from the foot of the mountain, the rolling hills are lush and green, like a vast green ocean. As you climb the winding mountain road, the fresh and pleasant air filled with the rich fragrance of flowers and plants hits you in the face, instantly making you feel refreshed and relaxed. Along the way, the mountain stream gurgles, the water is clear and transparent, and the round stones at the bottom of the water and the fish swimming freely are clearly visible. When you reach the mountainside, you can see the ancient Shenguang Temple. The red walls and green tiles of the temple complement each other, creating a sense of solemnity. Incense smoke rises from the temple, and long Buddhist chants linger in the ears, bringing peace and comfort to one's soul in an instant. Climbing to the top of the mountain and looking into the distance, the whole picture of Xingning city is in sight. High-rise buildings are arranged in an orderly manner and lined up one after another. The streets are crowded with cars and people. A beautiful picture of the blending of modern atmosphere and ancient charm slowly unfolds before your eyes.
After enjoying the natural scenery, Xingning’s food is even more mouth-watering. Every bite of Xingning’s special food is full of the warm taste of home, and every dish carries the rich flavor of fireworks in this small city. Have a bowl of steaming Xingning sashimi, with the fish slices as thin as cicada wings neatly spread on the plate, paired with various fresh ingredients such as shredded ginger, shredded green onion, sesame seeds, crushed peanuts, and then drizzled with special sashimi soy sauce. The moment you take a bite, the smooth feeling spreads over the tip of your tongue, and the deliciousness of the fish meat blooms in an instant, leaving you with an endless aftertaste. In addition to sashimi, Xingning’s pork soup is also not to be missed. The soup, carefully made with fresh pork and pork bones, is milky white in color and has a fragrant aroma. Take a sip of the soup, and the rich and mellow meaty aroma will diffuse in your mouth, not only warming your stomach but also healing your tired soul. There are also Xingning's special snacks and drinks such as Polygonum flower and Pearl Red Sweet Wine. Each of them has a unique flavor. Once you have tasted it, you can't stop and always want to eat it again.
As night falls, the streets and alleys of Xingning are brightly lit and bustling with activity. Take a stroll in Xingning's night market and feel the lively atmosphere of this small city. The street stalls are filled with a wide variety of goods, including exquisite handicrafts, fragrant special snacks, and a wide variety of fashionable clothing. The stall owners enthusiastically solicit customers, and the bargaining sounds one after another form a harmonious and beautiful melody of the market. Find a small street shop to sit down, enjoy the delicious food while watching people coming and going, and the fatigue of the day will gradually dissipate in this warm and cozy atmosphere.
The trip to Xingning is an unforgettable journey with in-depth dialogue with history, close embrace with nature, and surprising encounter with delicious food. This small town, with its simple elegance and warm hospitality, has left an indelible impression on me. It is like a pearl forgotten in a corner by the years, silently emitting its own unique light in the long river of time. When I left Xingning, my heart was filled with reluctance and I was looking forward to meeting it again next time to explore its endless charm again.
