All Moments About Wilaya de Fes
Fes – The Timeless Heart of Morocco
Stepping into Fes feels like traveling back in time. Known as Morocco’s cultural and spiritual capital, this city is home to the world’s oldest university, ancient medinas, and a rich artisan heritage. Every street, alley, and souk tells a story of history, tradition, and craftsmanship.
The Enchanting Medina – Fes el-Bali
The Medina of Fes el-Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most intact medieval cities in the world. Getting lost in its maze of narrow alleys, bustling souks, and centuries-old mosques is part of the experience. Unlike Marrakesh, Fes feels more raw and authentic—here, life continues much as it has for centuries.
The Famous Tanneries
One of the most iconic sights in Fes is the Chouara Tannery, where leather is dyed using traditional methods that have remained unchanged for generations. From the terraces above, the view of the colorful dyeing pits is both stunning and fascinating.
Al-Qarawiyyin – The World’s Oldest University
Founded in 859 AD, Al-Qarawiyyin University is recognized as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Though non-Muslims can’t enter the prayer hall, the library and surrounding architecture are worth admiring.
A City of Artisans
Fes is known for its handmade ceramics, intricate zellige tilework, and fine brass and copper crafts. Watching artisans at work in their small workshops gave me a deep appreciation for the city’s dedication to preserving its heritage.
Final Thoughts
Fes is not just a city—it’s an experience. It’s a place where history, tradition, and daily life blend seamlessly. Whether wandering through the medina, admiring ancient architecture, or exploring its vibrant souks, Fes is a destination that stays with you long after you leave.

A store located near the old town of Fez that sells and manufactures Moroccan tile tableware, ornaments, furniture, etc.
Morocco values traditional crafts, and one of them is the representative mosaic tile.
They are used everywhere in the house, such as on floors, stairs, and walls, and are important in daily life.

Colored square tiles are cut with a chisel. I used tools like these to cut out the geometric parts.
Once the various parts were completed, I placed the tiles upside down.

Exquisite,
Exquisite, the price is unexpectedly cheap... Slightly speaking, you can pick a few pieces of your favorite or a hand letter is great!
Exquisite bronze and leather making workshops are scattered in the alleys, just walk into a family like the legend of walking into the thousand and one nights~ the bronzes and leather goods here are all Handmade. Asked the Moroccan guide, why use manual work, he smiled and said: "Good things, the machine can't do it, still have to use the hand."

The uncle
The uncle leather dyeing workshop in the old town of Fes is the most iconic attraction of the whole of Fez, and its taste is also very "signature". The leather workshop has stench - don't say that you have not been reminded! It is stinking! ! But since it is a world cultural heritage, it is worth seeing.
There is a tradition of the millennium, using natural materials including pigeon droppings and lime to produce the world's finest leather. In 2015-2016, it was repaired for more than a year, and it still retains its original appearance.
When you enter the leather workshop, a staff member will send you mint leaves to shock you (but what kind of bird is used in the wood), and see the Chinese aunts directly plugged into the two nostrils, um, They should all come to be funny. . .
There are many fake brand names in the leather workshop (although it is leather), or the most favorite shoes, there are really many styles to choose from, cheap and good~ I bought several pairs, thank you for the hard work of the staff. ~
Mio..
This small
This small leather workshop is indeed the iconic attraction of Fez, which is said to be the world's finest leather with natural materials including pigeon droppings and lime. Every day, there are a lot of tourists from all over the world who climb up to the top of the vendors to overlook the dye house. When you enter the door, you will get a few mint leaves and cover your nose with the nose, but the taste is not unbearable. I don't know much about leather, but the leather products here are really soft to touch, and the seller repeatedly says, "I promise you can wear for many years." Remember to bargain, they are called leather garments with a price of 3,000 yuan, which can be bought at about eight or nine hundred.
