The Thai-Lao market in Tha Uthen District, Nakhon Phanom Province has been around for decades, but was closed during the Covid outbreak. Now it has reopened. We went during the New Year, and the atmosphere was quite lively. The weather was cool and comfortable to walk around. Since we were staying near the market, near the Mekong River Road, we walked around since morning. When we were tired, we took a break and then went back to see the new atmosphere. The market is open every Monday and Thursday morning. Thai vendors set up their stalls early in the morning, but Lao people start setting up their stalls at 8am after the border opens and last until around noon. The area where Lao people set up their stalls is on the road along the Mekong River in Tha Uthen District, a distance of no more than 1 kilometer. However, the Thai stalls are on the road along the Mekong River to Tha Uthen Fresh Market and nearby areas. There are two highlights for tourists from the city like us: forest products from Laos, both fruits and roots, and various animals that the locals of Nakhon Phanom (Tai Nyo) eat. You will see red crabs squirming around in basins. Some shops tie them to bamboo in bundles. There are also larvae of some kind of beetle in round balls of soil. If I remember correctly, they are called Tua Bong and others such as field mice, squirrels, horseshoe crabs, red ant eggs, lizards, geckos, frogs, worms, wild boars, bats, birds, fish. It is very enjoyable to walk around. The second highlight is after 8:00 a.m., after the Thai national anthem has finished playing, Lao people who take the ferry to sell their goods will rush to line up to make temporary border passes. Whoever comes first gets to reserve a spot first. The porters will take their goods, while the sellers will rush to make their passes and set up their shops. Before they are finished setting up, the buyers will be waiting for the sellers to buy the forest products they are interested in. This is a way of life that is not normally seen in general markets. If you have the chance to visit Nakhon Phanom, I recommend you to come see the local way of life at this Thai-Lao market every Monday and Thursday morning. It is only about a half hour drive from Nakhon Phanom city. You can park your car in the parking lot (with a parking fee) or on the side of the road before reaching the market or near the temple. In addition to seeing strange products, you can also buy food such as grilled rice with shredded pork, Lao-Vietnamese pate, which is crispy bread with soft filling on the inside, along with warm drinks. When visiting Nakhon Phanom Province, everyone must think of Phra That Phanom. But in addition to Phra That Phanom, there is another beautiful chedi with a long history, which is Phra That Tha Uthen. Phra That Tha Uthen is located in Wat Phra That Tha Uthen in Tha Uthen District, about 30 kilometers north of Nakhon Phanom City, which is the route to Bueng Kan Province. Anyone traveling to Tham Nakha from Nakhon Phanom Province can stop by to pay homage to Phra That Tha Uthen. And if you are a spiritual person, you should not miss it. To travel to Tha Uthen District, in addition to renting a car to drive yourself, there are tour buses from Nakhonchai Air and 999 Transport Company that go directly from Bangkok to here. Or if coming from Nakhon Phanom City, there are also buses. What we saw was a vintage car like in the movie "Fan Chan"! But we are not sure of the travel schedule and time. Personally, we like the atmosphere inside Wat Phra That Tha Uthen a lot because it is quiet, there are not many tourists, and it has unique art and architecture that looks different from other places. The current chedi (January 2023) is white/gray. I heard that the chedi is being renovated regularly. Recently, the villagers have helped collect donations to restore it and received gold buds or golden flowers. And what we really like is the combination of exquisite stucco work on the chedi with the simple craftsmanship of the mythical animals (the cute and adorable Himmapan marshmallows) and the high-relief sculptures on the outer walls of the chedi. We hope that both the atmosphere and these artworks will remain with the chedi forever and not disappear in the future. We almost forgot another highlight of Wat Phra That Tha Uthen: the temple is right next to the Mekong River. If you look across the river, you are in Laos. The view is beautiful and the weather is nice, but we forgot to take a picture. There is only a picture of the entrance archway where you can see the river and the mountains a little bit. Phra That Tha Uthen is located in Wat Phra That Tha Uthen, Tha Uthen District, Nakhon Phanom Province. The main pagoda is made of brick and mortar in a rectangular shape similar to Phra That Phanom. It has 3 floors. The first floor is a tunnel containing valuables. The second floor is built to cover the tunnel. The third floor is a large pagoda, approximately 66 meters high. Phra Ajarn Srithat built it in 1911 and took 6 years to complete in 1916. In 1997, the southern gate arch on the lower floor of the pagoda collapsed. The Fine Arts Department therefore restored it and completed it in 1998. They also added concrete beams inside to prevent the pagoda from collapsing. Wat Phra That Tha Uthen has been declared a national ancient monument. And the boundary of the ancient site was determined in the Royal Gazette, Volume 115, Special Section 4, Page 2, dated January 14, 1998, with an area of ​​approximately 2 rai, 2 ngan, and 89.48 square wa. This chedi is an important work of art and a place of worship. It contains the relics of an Arahant, which Phra Ajahn Srithat invited from Yangon.
