Romanesque Stone Bridge in the Valley
Heading West in Spain ~ Cáceres (Region)
The Parral Bridge in Jarandilla de la Vera is a charming Romanesque stone bridge that is well-maintained and still in use. You can drive over it, and it has been standing for hundreds of years, which seems incredible.
Next to the bridge, there is a spectacular swimming pool. The clear water is very cool, and the wooded area provides plenty of shade to relax in. There is ample parking, so it is often quite busy. However, it is a great place to spend a few hours, cool off, and continue exploring the area.

An insignificant ancient bridge
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
The bridge is symbolic but dispensable. In a 16th-century city, the bridge had no historical status and in 2005 the Cáceres City Council implemented a project that included its demolition and the construction of a roundabout as its central monument, becoming a purely decorative mission.

Cáceres' impressive modern art museum
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
If you plan a holiday in Cáceres, make time to visit the Helga de Alberta Contemporary Art Museum, which is sure to amaze you. Admission is currently free, but reservations are required.
If you are not a fan of contemporary art, I recommend taking a guided tour, otherwise you will see some works that will leave you indifferent or unable to understand. One of the peculiarities of the building is the almost complete absence of right angles in its structure. The staff was very friendly and always willing to answer any clarifications we asked for, providing you with attentive and unparalleled service. Highly recommended and I will definitely repeat this experience.

Another Arabic-style tower
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
The Torre Yerba is part of the walls of the World Heritage city of Cáceres. It is an architecture of Arabic origin and built on Roman ashlars. It's close to Barbos and the Plaza Mayor itself.
Like the rest of the building, it has a square plan and is located within the defensive enclosure of the monumental city of Cáceres. It was called the Albanian Tower (a tower used for defense and watchtower). It is one of the last buildings to stand under Muslim rule in Cáceres and dates back to the 12th century. Based on ancient Roman architecture. Despite its long history, it is in a very good state of conservation. When it was built, it was part of the wall used by the Arabs to defend the city.

A palace that combines Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
Its 1537 exterior combines Gothic and Renaissance elements, and its grand Mudejar interior courtyard, built in the 14th century, features pointed arches on thick square piers with chamfered corners. During the renovation, important archaeological discoveries were discovered in the gardens.

Renovated 18th-century Renaissance palace
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
The house or palace of Ovando was built in 1519 during the Renaissance, but was reformed in the 18th century. One of the finest examples of palace architecture in Cáceres from the 15th and 16th centuries. It was supposed to have two towers, one on each side of the main facade, but one of them was never completed. The finished tower has a window decorated with an arch. The window railings of the facade and especially the entrance with half-moon arches are worth mentioning.

16th century townhouse
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
Casa del Sol (House of the Sun) or Casa de los Solís is a fortified townhouse in the Gothic and Renaissance styles. Its nickname comes from the Solís family coat of arms, which features a sun. It was built in the 15th century and remodeled in the 16th century. It is now occupied by a religious group, the Fathers of the Precious Blood.

This dripping-colored palace is the residence of the Catholic Archbishop.
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
Also known as Casa de los Golfines de Abajo, it is one of the finest stately homes in the historic architectural district of Cáceres. It has a Gothic structure, in keeping with the model of fortress houses built in the 15th century, although its pannier decoration dates from the 17th century. The towers on either side of the facade have different proportions: taller on the right, smaller on the left. The facade is semicircular arch with crests on both sides. Above it are two windows, one with a grille and the other with a semicircular arch. This house was the residence of the Catholic Monarchs when they visited the city.

Must-Visit Attraction! Entry Fee Only 1.50 Euros!
The church, built in the 18th century in Baroque style, is both surprising and saddening. It is located in the center of Cáceres. The location itself is overwhelming, situated on a high hill that requires climbing stairs to reach. The building stands out as it is grayish-white, contrasting with the surrounding stone and ochre-toned buildings. The entry fee is worth it, and it's very affordable.
Next to the entrance, there is another spectacular stone facade. The most impressive feature is the main altar, a true gem. A good restoration should be considered to restore the splendor of the walls, which still retain Baroque-style murals. Reusing it as a religious space would certainly be more respected than its current use as a concert venue. From the tower, you can enjoy unparalleled views of Cáceres.

From the Paleolithic to the Romans
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
The museum is housed in two connected buildings: Casa de las Veletas, which houses the Moorish cistern, and Casa de los Caballos, which dates from the 16th century. The museum's collections bear witness to the history of the first settlers to the latest contemporary art. Highlights include Bronze Age stelae, Oriental treasures, Iron Age stone boar sculptures, Roman mosaics, ethnographic collections and a collection of 20th-century Spanish art, not to mention the presence of El Greco.
The museum is temporarily partially closed, initially until 2026. Prior to this, only the archaeological chamber and the cistern were open.

Spectacular views from the top
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
An Arab tower, roughly square in plan. After Ferdinand II of León reconquered Cáceres in 1169, a family member founded the Council of Cáceres in the city, which later became known as the Order of Santiago. The tower takes its name from the Caliph Abu Ya'qub, whose troops conquered the city in 1173. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was known as the Belfry. Now open to the public. It houses three cultural visitor centers.

The Plaza Mayor in Caceres is very unique and very beautiful
Spain Westward ~ Cáceres (region)
A very lively place. The center of the city is always full of activities. It is the entrance to the historic center of Cáceres, a beautiful pedestrian area connecting the ancient city with the modern city. The arcade is full of lots of little shops and bars, places to have a drink or buy souvenirs, but there are also small areas of benches where you can sit and rest, think or just enjoy the view.

Extremadura This historic city, known as the "City of 1001 Shields" is well worth a visit.
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
You'll feel like a time traveler as you walk along the narrow cobblestone streets. Surrounded by mansions, Renaissance palaces and churches with stork nests, you’ll understand why Cáceres is a World Heritage City. Get your camera ready to immortalize one of the most beautiful historic town centers in Spain.
Life around the Plaza Mayor
We recommend entering the city through the traditional entrance: the 18th-century Estrella Arch, which is wide enough for horse-drawn carriages to pass through. Below you you’ll see the wide Plaza Mayor, a lively arcaded square with plenty of places to stop for a drink or coffee.

It turns out that there were reservoirs in ancient times
Traveling westward in Spain ~ Cáceres (region)
The Trujillo Pool is the most original and least known monument in the Trujillo historical complex. For some it has Roman origins (it preserves ashlar made of Anatirosis), an Islamic pool from the Umayyad period that served, among other functions, to water livestock for others , the fact is that it was excavated at a depth of 14 meters. A late 15th-century staircase provides easy access and collects water for cleaning during the summer. There are still remnants of a canal that carried water to the fields of San Lazaro and San Juan.

The forgotten and inconspicuous little stone bridge
Traveling westward in Spain ~ Cáceres (region)
This is a 17th century bridge that got its name from the hermitage next to it; it’s a beautiful stone bridge, but what’s even more striking is its surroundings, which are beautiful. It is a pity that this small bridge is no longer the main access to the city, and its once glorious purpose has been slowly forgotten by the world.
The Jerte River flows beneath it, and the area is lushly wooded and, at this time of year, flowers bloom.

A transit train station with a glorious history
Traveling westward in Spain ~ Cáceres (region)
This is a historic station and unfortunately there is only one train left today, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, to Cáceres (and, of course, the onward line to Madrid). Previously this was the main route from Madrid to Lisbon, with many passenger and freight trains running along this line. But towards the end of the last century, traffic gradually decreased until in 2012 only one night train was rerouted through Salamanca; fulfilling the wishes of the Portuguese, who wanted to close their section.
Today, it is impossible to travel to Portugal via here, as the Portuguese closed it partially (until Torres Vargens, where it connects with the line to Badajoz). Marvão-Beirã and Castelo de Vide stations have been converted into accommodation facilities, while other stations have been abandoned. On the Spanish side, which remains open, Aldea Moret, Aliseda and Herreruela have been destroyed, while in Arroyo-Malpartida and San Vicente de Alcántara there are only trains left on the line.
But the biggest problem with this station is that it is far from the city and there are no city buses.

monastery ruins building
Traveling westward in Spain ~ Cáceres (region)
The Monastery of Valbon is located on a granite plateau about five kilometers from Valencia de Alcantara. The current ruined building was built in the 16th century. There are two versions that try to explain its origins: the most legendary was created by a group of pilgrims returning from the Abbey of Sainte-Marie in the French town of Valbonne, from where they gave the temple its name. However, another, more historical explanation suggests that the monument was built together with other monasteries in 1569 at the request of Philip II and named "Valbón" (from the Portuguese "good valley" ) naming. The works will be entrusted to Juan Bravo, an important figure in the architectural panorama of Extremadura in the 16th century, and the Marian image named after this topographical consecration is housed in the sanctuary . This carving was declared patron saint of the town in 1618 and was confirmed in 1678 as patron saint not only of the town but of the entire region. The monastery was destroyed during the War of Succession after Portuguese troops invaded the city. However, its final decline was caused by the 18th century declaration of the Virgen de los Remedios as the town's patron saint, as this other carving is housed a few kilometers away from Valencia de Alcantara (Valencia de Alcántara) Closer hermitage. The end of the veneration of Our Lady of Valbon led to the monument being forgotten and abandoned, and the carvings were moved to the convent of Santa Clara, where nothing has been heard from since 1910. Starting next to it, climb the Zafra I, II, III and IV dolmens, from where it is easy to enter the monastery through the lanes between the farms and then follow the path back to the town. It is strongly recommended that the 12-kilometer route has a gradient of no more than 300 meters.

The ancient tomb town on the Spanish-Portuguese border
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
Located on the border of Spain and Portugal, all eight of its districts are home to a series of Neolithic dolmens that can be seen following published routes.
The first remains found in the city came from different areas of the Paleolithic period. However, it was during the Neolithic period that the first civilizations to settle here left their greatest mark on the city: the cultural center declared that the 41 dolmens (prehistoric burial buildings built with stone slabs) constitute the best megalithic site in Europe.
Once in town we discovered the Gothic Jewish Quarter. It is one of the most attractive and best preserved sites in Spain, declared a National Historic-Artistic Site, with its many pointed main facades. The Nuestra Señora de Rocamador Church has also been declared a Historic-Artistic Site. We must not forget the Renaissance Encarnación Church with its Gothic façade.
Every year, Alcántara, Valencia organizes a walk through the countryside of the town, which they call "La Transfrontera".

Brozas has magnificent fortresses as well as interesting noble buildings.
Here is a list of some of the most interesting civil buildings: the palace of Argüillos; the one of the Marquis of Reynaud, in Baroque style but built in Renaissance style; the Montenegrin Palace of Flores, built in the 16th century; and the house of Porres-Montemayor, with walls painted white.
Speaking of religious buildings, we have to mention the Church of Santa María la Mayor, built in ashlar stone in Gothic and Renaissance styles, and the Church of Santos Mártires, built between the 16th and 17th centuries and completed only in the 1960s.
In the city of Brozas, we found a spa right in the middle of an Extremadura ranch, surrounded by pools where migratory birds breed. The hotel's spa and accommodation are equipped with modern facilities. Let's not forget about the reservoir, where tourists can go fishing, especially for tench.

A beautiful town where even the emperor lived in seclusion
Spain Westward Journey ~ Cáceres (Region)
In Caucos de Yuste we must visit three squares: the Plaza Don Juan de Austria, shaped like an oval and lined with houses with wooden balconies and porches; the Plaza de España; and the Plaza de los Chorros, where the people have a harmonious atmosphere. The Parish Church of Our Lady of Asuncion was built in the 15th century and is one of the most elaborate and interesting sanctuary churches in the area.
Yet a large part of Cuacos de Yuste's heritage lies within its municipality. There we found the monasteries of Salvador, La Soledad, and Santa Ana. During the 15th century, the church and its first Gothic cloister were built. A Renaissance cloister was built in the 16th century to the east of the other. However, its international fame is due to the fact that it was the residence of Emperor Charles I when he left the crown to his son Philip II. A small and simple palace was built for him on the south side of the monastery. The Hieronymite Knights lived in the monastery.

Big and small ham!!
Drove to the farm Dehesa and Finca las Golondrinas in Miajadas, a farm with white and orange-topped characteristic buildings surrounded by flowers~ Here I saw the 'Iberian black pigs🐷' for the first time and witnessed their happy life! Also, we met our dog '🐶Manman''s Spanish friends
A free-range area of 4 football fields, acorns from the oak forest are their food, and they have dedicated places and arrangements for bathing and listening to music~
Surrounded by so many elegant living 🐷🐷 for the first time~ Maintaining a refined pig life takes about 18 months before they are ready for market~
After saying goodbye to the farm, we arrived at Casa Bautista, where the most famous ham in the Extremadura region is produced! Due to the high altitude, temperature difference, and special drying environment, the ham here has a different flavor from other places! Every bite is a treat for the taste buds!
Here, I truly witnessed the production process of a ham! Wearing sterile clothes, I visited every step of the production workshop! It was also a spectacular sight to see countless expensive hams surrounding me for the first time!
Without truly understanding the process from breeding to production, you wouldn't know that behind this extremely expensive ham, there is so much time, complex craftsmanship, and special value in controlling the ingredients and feed! Truly understanding the difference in ham quality!
After the tour, we went to Restaurant El Zaguán, where we experienced the charm of cheese and ham in the cellar! In the warm environment on the first floor~ we ended our trip to the Extremadura region with a classic Spanish lunch!

A trendy and niche destination in Cáceres city during a trip to Spain
My fourth heritage city tour was chosen to be in Cáceres city
I didn't expect the city to have such an artistic vibe on the flip side
Walking through the old town area, I discovered that a scene from 'Game of Thrones' was filmed here
The scope of the old town is not very large, and soon I found myself in the new town
These great spots are all worth checking in
Remember to bookmark them 🐎
·
▪️ Museo Helga de Alvear
This art museum is just beside the hotel and is not conspicuous at all
I didn't expect it to be so beautiful and photogenic inside
The whole museum is full of design sense and particularly photogenic
Different areas are used for the display of different works
It's no problem to spend half a day slowly looking through
▫️ Cáceres Old Town
Cáceres was listed as a World Heritage City in 1986
Walking through the city, every brick and tile is inscribed with the traces of history
I just happened to encounter the closing ceremony of a music festival
The performance of the large band on the main road was so atmospheric
▪️ Cáceres New Town
The new town area is more modern and residential
I just happened to come across a market stall
There are so many handmade accessories and bags that are too good to pass up
▫️ Restaurant Torre de Sande
This restaurant is located in the old town
The exterior wall is wrapped in green plants and is very conspicuous
Sitting in the outdoor area is just too beautiful and comfortable
Eating in a castle garden

Stayed in a boutique hotel with a full sense of design during my trip to Spain
Discovered a chic and niche hotel this time in Cáceres city
The location is exceptionally good
Right next to it is an art museum
Just a few minutes' walk from the historic city center
The newly renovated hotel is really distinctive
My room has a huge terrace
From which I can see the ancient historical buildings and city views of Cáceres
The design style is simple and fashionable, with a very European homey feel
In the afternoon, I walk back from the old town and bask in the sun in my room
Coming to Spain, I really feel the whole person chill out

The ancient Spanish city of Cáceres is quiet, ancient and authentic
[Opening]: The ancient city of Cáceres, Spain is located in
In the autonomous region of Estremadura in southwestern Spain, the ancient city walls were built during the Mudeshiva dynasty in the 12th century. At the same time, many towers were built during the era of the struggle between Islam and Catholicism. Surrounded by the ancient city walls, you can still see many ancient buildings built from the 12th to the 18th century. The streets and alleys outside the city walls are also very distinctive. Unlike Toledo which is crowded with tourists, you can choose an afternoon to stroll around the ancient city. In the quiet and leisurely atmosphere, you can feel the charm of the medieval ancient city.
🕘【Opening hours】: Free and open 24 hours
⛺【Amusement Park】: Navigate to Plaza Mayor (Figure 5) and you can see that opposite the square is the Buhac Tower (Figure 1) and the Gate of the Stars (Figure 2). Go up the steps and enter the Gate of the Stars to enter the central area within the ancient city wall. You can walk around the ancient city at will. You can see churches and towers everywhere. Some of the large houses here were once the residences of generals and are now government agencies. There is also the Parador Castle Hotel and two three-star Michelin restaurants in the ancient city. After your visit, you can take a break at Plaza Mayor, drink some coffee, chat about life, and watch people coming and going. It is truly a leisurely and peaceful half-day tour of this medieval city.
🚌【Transportation Guide】: It takes about four hours to drive from Madrid. You can also take a train from Madrid ATOCHA Railway Station, which takes about the same amount of time.
👉【Itinerary】: If you are traveling from Madrid to Lisbon, it is recommended to stay here for one night. There are also many hotels and homestays in the old town. If you have high requirements, you can stay at the Parado Castle Hotel, etc. If you have a low budget, you can also stay in a nearby homestay, which is also very good. Badajoz is also nearby, 70 kilometers away, and you can go to the city for more accommodation options at night.
