Jedburgh Castle Jail & Museum – History with a Chilling Twist
#hellohalloween
Jedburgh Castle Jail is a fascinating place to explore — part museum, part time capsule, and full of stories from Scotland’s darker past. The building looks like a castle from the outside, but inside you’ll find the preserved Victorian prison, with original cells, displays, and eerie sound effects that bring its history to life.
It’s surprisingly family-friendly, with clear information panels and just the right mix of spooky and educational. From the top floor, you also get fantastic views over Jedburgh and the surrounding Borders countryside.
My son particularly enjoyed the hands-on areas of the jail and museum: dressing as a prisoner, getting cuffed in the jail cells and running around the exercise yard.
Well worth a visit if you love history, atmosphere, and a touch of the macabre.
And guess what - entry is free! (Donations are encouraged).

Highland Cows at Jacksons at Jedburgh – Gentle Giants with Serious Charm
#hellohalloween
Meeting the Highland cows at Jacksons at Jedburgh was such a highlight — they’re every bit as adorable in person as you’d hope. With their long fringes, soft eyes, and impressive horns, these gentle giants are the stars of the farm.
The setting makes it even more special — surrounded by beautiful Borders countryside, it’s peaceful and easy to explore. The cows are calm and curious, happy to come close for photos, as close as they can to the safety fence. They are also clearly well cared for and happy roaming their big field on the farm. It’s the perfect little stop for animal-lovers or families who want to get a closer look at one of Scotland’s most iconic breeds.
Simple, scenic, and full of character — the Highland cows at Jacksons at Jedburgh are guaranteed to make you smile.

Jacksons at Jedburgh
#hellohalloween
Right in the heart of the Borders, Jacksons at Jedburgh is a lovely working farm that’s become a real favourite for families — especially during its seasonal events. It’s the kind of place that instantly feels welcoming, with open countryside views, friendly staff, and plenty of space for kids to run around and explore.
Depending on the time of year, you might find something different happening — from broom making and festive fun to chances to meet the animals up close. There are great photo spots all around the farm, and my kids were big fans of the yellow tractor.
There are multiple fields, which are home to cows (Highland!!), sheep, goats and more. You’ll get a bag of animal feed to give to the animals and this was a highlight for my kids who all adored feeding the animals from their wee hands. There is also a garden area with lots of different kids toys and some picnic tables so you can slow down for a bit and fill those tummies.
It’s a relaxed, rural day out that keeps things simple — no gimmicks, just a proper farm experience where families can enjoy being outdoors together. Jacksons at Jedburgh is proof that the best memories are often made down on the farm.

Carter Bar Border Crossing – Where Scotland Meets England
#hellohalloween
The Carter Bar crossing on the A68 is one of those simple stops that feels surprisingly meaningful. Sitting high in the hills between Jedburgh and Northumberland, it marks the official border between Scotland and England — a place where you can literally stand with one foot in each country.
We pulled over to take in the views and found two huge stones marking the divide — one carved with Scotland and the other with England. The landscape around them is wide and open, with rolling hills and that fresh, wild Border air. There’s even a flagpole flying the Saltire and a “Welcome to Northumberland” sign covered in stickers from travellers who’ve stopped before.
It’s an easy place to reach, with a large lay-by for parking, and perfect for photos or a short break on the drive north or south. There’s something quietly powerful about standing there — no fence or gate, just open land and the feeling of crossing into a new chapter of the journey.
This border crossing was the first for our daughter and younger son - but the first of many big adventures over the next few years!
If you’re road-tripping between Edinburgh and northern England, Carter Bar is the perfect scenic stop — simple, symbolic, and beautifully Scottish.

Jedburgh Abbey, Jedburgh
#hellohalloween
Jedburgh Abbey is one of those places that stops you in your tracks. Rising up in the middle of the town, the remains of this 12th-century Augustinian abbey are breathtaking — towering stone arches, intricate carvings, and enough left standing to imagine the grandeur it once held.
We spent a peaceful hour or two exploring the ruins, wandering through the cloisters and along the grassy grounds where you can look straight through the open windows to the hills beyond. There’s a small museum too, with fascinating artefacts that tell the story of the abbey’s turbulent past and the cross-border conflicts that shaped it.
It’s right in the centre of Jedburgh, easy to reach on foot, and surrounded by lovely cafés and little shops (but there are some Abbey picnic spots of you fancy!). Even if you’ve seen other Border abbeys, Jedburgh feels special — calm, atmospheric, and beautifully preserved.

Fenniehurst Castle is a must-see for those who love the Scottish Borders.
#September Good Places 2025
Ferniegist Castle is the kind of “photo-grade” stone castle that pulls you into a fairytale world in a second! 🏰✨ Its unique 16th century Revival style plus slightly tilted towers really have the rough and mysterious charm of the Scottish Borders ~ But not only that, this is not just a historical display window, but a "living castle"!
It has been the Kerr family ancestral home, and every brick and tile is filled with passion and stories. As you walk through the ancient stone walls and rebuilt courtyards, you will feel the toughness of the castle to stand despite the turmoil on the border between England and Scotland! Now that the castle is open, in addition to being a conference center, you can also stay down and experience the wonderful atmosphere of "the blending of ancient and modern" for a night! 😆
Whether you’re a history nerd or looking for a special Scottish accommodation to take pictures of a new experience, Fenehurst Castle is definitely the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle and delve into the legendary world of Scottish luxury! ✨

Jedburgh A Historic Gem in the Scottish Borders
#mytraveldiary Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders is a town that blends history, charm, and natural beauty. The most striking feature is Jedburgh Abbey, an impressive ruined Augustinian abbey that dominates the town and tells centuries of stories through its towering arches. Walking through the narrow streets, you come across quaint houses, local shops, and welcoming cafés that make it feel friendly and easygoing.
Mary Queen of Scots House adds another layer of intrigue, offering a glimpse into the dramatic history of Scotland. Surrounding the town are rolling hills and scenic walks, making it a great place for both history lovers and those who enjoy peaceful landscapes. Jedburgh feels like a step back in time but still has the warmth of a lived-in town. It is the kind of place where history is always close by, yet life moves at a relaxed pace.

Slow travel in The Scottish Borders (2025)
The hard part was picking 20 pictures because there's many, many more of them and many other things we did too!
Here is what our life looks like in Scotland while we aren't "travelling" in the ✈️ flying or 🚢 cruising sense of the word.
I still feel like our weekends involve some travel, even if it's mostly local!
Would you call this travel? Is it better to say "days out" ? What do you think?
BTW, I'm Tasha and I love to travel. I do everything with my 3 kids and so far we have done 43 countries as parent + kids! Make sure to follow if you want to keep up with our adventures so you can see what is possible with autistic children 👇

A Memorable Stop at the England-Scotland Border
During our return journey from Scotland to England, we stumbled upon an iconic stone marker at the border between the two countries. This simple yet significant landmark features "England" inscribed on one side and "Scotland" on the other, symbolizing the division and connection between the two regions.
The weather was absolutely perfect, with clear skies and gentle sunlight, making it an ideal moment to pause and reflect. We took a few minutes to capture photos and appreciate the historical significance of standing between two nations. It felt surreal to be at such a notable geographic point, marking the transition between Scotland’s rugged beauty and England’s charming landscapes.
This unplanned stop turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. There’s something special about finding meaningful landmarks on the journey rather than the destination. It made the road trip even more memorable and added a touch of joy to our travels. A simple stone, yet a powerful reminder of history and unity, made this moment unforgettable.#travel #uk
