No.2 of Best Things to Do in LucerneNight view
Built in 1332, the Capel Covered Bridge connects the two banks of Lucerne. It is an ancient wooden covered bridge in Europe. It was rebuilt after the fire in 1993 and leads to the octagonal water tower, the representative landscape of Lucerne. Like the Mussegger walls, the covered bridge and water tower were part of the Lucerne fortifications. Lucerne's iconic landscape, the Capel Covered Bridge and the Octagonal Water Tower, are iconic buildings in Lucerne, and even in Switzerland, and often appear on postcards. During the day, there are beautiful flowers on the bridge railing; strolling here at dusk, you can enjoy the romantic medieval feelings; at night, the covered bridge and the water tower are extraordinarily romantic under the illumination of the lanterns. So it is also often called "Flower Bridge Water Tower". Covered Bridge Painted Capel Covered Bridge spans the Royce River and is about 200 meters long. There are hundreds of religious historical paintings on the beams under the eaves, depicting the life of the saint who guarded Lucerne and the development history of the ancient city. Octagonal water tower The whole bridge has two turning points, only the water tower was not damaged when it experienced the fire. The water tower was once an outpost to monitor foreign invasions, and was also used as a loot storage room and an interrogation room.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND
#centraleurope ##switzerland ##historicallandmarks ##localguides
Nestled on the shore of Lake Lucerne and among the beautiful snow-capped mountains, Lucerne (Luzern) is one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland.
The reasons why are easy to see. Compact and easy to explore, it is steeped in history, its ancient architecture lovingly preserved. Like a scene from a fairytale, the city is both beautiful and romantic, with a range of experiences and attractions for the entire family to enjoy.
TIP: If you are visiting Lucerne for just the first time, opt for a city walking tour with a local guide. It’s a great way to get acquainted with the city, covers all the musts, and you can combine with e.g. Mt Pilatus excursion or Swiss Trasport Museum (more info about all these below). Another nice option for the first visit is this city walking tour that also includes a boat ride on Lake Lucerne.
Without further ado, here are the very best things to do in Lucerne, starting with the main sights and attractions in the city itself:
1. Chapel Bridge & Water Tower
Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) is one of the most iconic landmarks of Lucerne. This covered wooden footbridge is the best-known and most photographed sight in Lucerne, featured in all brochures and travel guides. A walk over the famous Chapel Bridge is a must-do in Lucerne!
TIP: If you are staying in town, come here at sunrise or sunset for magical views with (at least in the morning) no crowds! And lookout for the Alpine Swifts that roost under the rooftop of the Wasserturm – their return from their African winter home marks the beginning of spring for locals.
2. Old Town
Lucerne’s picturesque Old Town on the right bank of the Reuss River is just stunning. Visiting it truly feels like taking a step back in time, with its historic architecture beautifully preserved.
The good thing is that the historic old town is quite compact and the area is totally pedestrianized, so it is easy to explore on foot.
You’ll find plenty of opportunities for memorable photos, from narrow cobblestoned streets and ancient bridges to medieval squares with fountains. The tall, timber-framed buildings are brightly painted in rainbow colors and look really picturesque.
TIP: Head to the Rathausquai (Town Hall Square) any Tuesday and Saturday between 6 am and 1 pm to visit the bustling fruit and vegetable market. The stalls are set up in the arcades along the river and the lively atmosphere – not to mention the great views of Chapel Bridge – make it well worth a visit.
3. Boat ride on Lake Lucerne
Let’s leave the highlights of the city for a bit because truly, one of the best things to do in Lucerne is actually escaping the hustle of the old town and taking a boat ride on the famous Lake Lucerne. It’s especially nice to do in the summer but is possible in any season.
Evening Magic in Lucerne 🇨🇭✨

As the sun sets behind the Alps, Lucerne transforms into a peaceful dream. The calm waters of Lake Lucerne mirror the golden lights from the Chapel Bridge and surrounding old town buildings, while the distant mountains fade into a soft silhouette. The evening air is crisp, yet comforting—perfect for a lakeside stroll or a quiet dinner with a view. Street musicians add charm to the already enchanting atmosphere. Whether you’re wandering aimlessly or sitting still, Lucerne’s night brings a special kind of serenity you won’t forget.

🌊 Charming Riverside Walk Through Lucerne’s Old Town
Walking through the old streets of Lucerne by the river was a magical experience. The Reuss River flows gracefully alongside centuries-old buildings, and with the iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) in sight, the entire scene looked like a postcard.
We took a leisurely stroll along the riverbanks, passing cozy riverside cafés and charming shops nestled in beautifully preserved medieval buildings. The water shimmered in the afternoon sun, and ducks glided peacefully by—it was such a tranquil yet vibrant part of the city.
As we wandered deeper into the old town, every corner revealed something new: quaint alleyways, intricate murals, hidden fountains, and even small market stalls. Sitting on a bench watching the river flow and people pass by was a perfect way to take in the soul of Lucerne.

Chapel Bridge, Switzerland
Chapel Bridge is located in Lucerne, Switzerland. It is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe. When it was first built, it was 270 meters long. However, because the riverbank has been breaking down over the centuries, the bridge is now 204.7 meters long. There are many paintings along the bridge that were painted in the 17th century. However, more than 2/3 of the paintings were destroyed in a fire in 1993. #TravelEurope ##switzerland

Lucerne, nestled by Lake Lucerne and surrounded by snow-capped mountains, exudes a timeless charm that feels straight out of a fairytale. Begin your visit with a stroll across the Chapel Bridge, its wooden arches adorned with vibrant flowers and paintings that tell stories of the city’s past. The old town, with its cobblestone streets and frescoed buildings, invites you to wander and discover cozy cafés and boutique shops.
When I visited, I was enchanted by the magical reflections of the city lights on the lake at dusk, with the majestic Mount Pilatus standing tall in the background. A sunset lake cruise offered a serene way to soak in the beauty, while a trip up to Mount Rigi revealed panoramic vistas I’ll never forget.

🇨🇭 Chapel Bridge @ Lucerne
Located in the heart of Lucerne's Old Town and spans the Reuss River, the Chapel Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in Lucerne. The bridge is one of the oldest wooden covered bridges in Europe and dates back to the 14th century. It has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries. In 1993, a large portion of the bridge was destroyed by a fire, but extensive restoration efforts were made to rebuild it to its former glory. We thoroughly enjoyed strolling across the Chapel Bridge, soaking up the beautiful views, and exploring the Old Town on both sides of the river.

We visited world's oldest truss bridge and happily ticked one item off our bucket list. What's more to say, the main landmark in Luzern. This bridge restored after a fire in the 90s still has some of the original paintings left in it. It's at the centre of town connecting the two banks and looks wonderful with the water tower beside it. Beautiful ambience. A bridge on a river with colourful flowers surrounded.
