The Spanish Costa del Azahar, untouched by mass tourism
❣️A hidden and independent gem on the Costa del Azahar—Peñíscola.
🌺 White houses cluster around a medieval castle, deep blue waters embrace golden beaches, and this Spanish town, known as the "city on the sea," offers pure tranquility away from the crowds. It maintains just the right distance from bustling big cities—neither too accessible to be overwhelmed by tourists nor too remote to reach.

📚 Historical traces, testified by the castle
The name Peñíscola means "an island." This town is situated on a bare rocky peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean, like a long tongue protruding from the gentle curve of the Mediterranean coastline, earning it the title "city on the sea."
The Papa Luna Castle (also known as Peñíscola Castle), built by the Knights Templar at the end of the 13th century, is the landmark of Peñíscola. It stands proudly on the town’s highest point, overlooking the Mediterranean.
This castle was not only an important military fortress but also made history when Pope Benedict XIII (Pope Luna) chose it as his retreat in 1411. He fought here for the unity of the Catholic Church until his abdication in 1429.
🐲 Game of Thrones aura, understated charm
Although Game of Thrones was filmed here, its unique geography made it an excellent location for the port of Meereen, with many harbor scenes shot here. From the castle, you can overlook the "Slaver’s Bay" ruled by Daenerys Targaryen in the show. Yet, compared to other Game of Thrones filming sites, it seems not to have been overrun by mass tourism. Fans can walk the stone paths taken by characters, find familiar views, and feel the deeper historical echoes beyond the screen.
😶🌫️ Labyrinth alleys, white romance
Surrounding the castle is a town of white walls and blue windows, exuding Mediterranean romance. The narrow, winding streets resemble a maze, with the white exterior walls of houses shining brightly under the sun.
Bright flowers hang from balconies and windowsills, decorating every corner. You can casually sit on the street, enjoy a coffee, and quietly soak in the essence of a perfect holiday.
🌊 Nature’s gift, coastal luxury
Peñíscola boasts several kilometers of stunning beaches, rare soft sandy shores in Europe. The waves are quite strong, making it enjoyable to play in the water. The northern part features a five-kilometer stretch of golden sand, a beautiful scene praised as the most beautiful section along the Costa del Azahar. If time allows, staying here overnight is highly recommended, as the Mediterranean sunrise and sunset are unimaginably beautiful.

🤩 At sunset, the whole town is bathed in enchanting golden light. When the moon rises over the western hills, sitting on the cliff by the sea breeze, you’ll feel a calmness unlike other popular Spanish destinations. Prices here are relatively low, yet it offers Mediterranean romance, medieval history, and the fantasy charm of Game of Thrones. This combination of cost-effectiveness and uniqueness is exactly what niche travelers seek.
