Peñíscola is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the province of Castellón.

The castle sits on a large ridge overlooking the sea, offering a glimpse into its past, when knights and battlemented fortresses occupied the lands of El Maestragor. Pope Benedict XIII, known as the "Luna Pope", chose this place as his retreat and launched the struggle for the unity of the Catholic Church. The fort stands at the highest point of the peninsula. The Parade Ground is a pleasant balcony overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and its castle is the ideal spot to enjoy panoramic views of the coastline. In spring and summer, this walled enclosure hosts the Spanish Comic Strip Film Festival and the Ancient and Baroque Music Festival. But this gem of a small peninsula heritage and historic district site is only part of the town today. Outside the defensive walls there are many restaurants, apartments and residential areas, testifying to the reputation of this fashionable beach location as a tourist destination.
