A journey to Indonesia's hidden Gem: Lake Toba
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Lake Toba and Samosir Island, and it was truly a trip of a lifetime! From the breathtaking natural beauty of the lake to the fascinating culture of the Batak people, this trip had something for everyone. ☀️🤗
First, let me start with Lake Toba itself. 🌴This is the largest volcanic lake in the world, and it is absolutely stunning. The water is crystal clear and the scenery is simply breathtaking. We spent hours just sitting by the shore and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.🥑🥥🥭
🚣But Lake Toba isn't just a pretty sight - it's also a great place for activities. The highlight of the trip was visiting Samosir Island. This is an island in the middle of the volcano Lake, Lake Toba, and it is home to the Batak people. The Batak have a rich and fascinating culture. We visited traditional Batak villages, such as Siallagan and Tomok where you can experience Batak music and performances and that’s also the place where you can buy Batak souvenirs such as wooden sculptures, Batak instruments and clothes.🏊💚🌴
There are a lot of Home Stays, Bungalows or Hotels mainly around Tuk Tuk area, which is the lively tourist area. One of the best and most authentic plays to stay is Tuk-Tuk Timbul, it is not directly located in the middle of the lively touristic Tuk-Tuk area, but it lays on the way (by foot around 15-20min and by motorbike around 5min).☀️☀️ tuition's Timbul is such a gem, peaceful, your bungalow is directly in front of the lake for morning dips and the people are so friendly. Perfect place if you want to reflect, find inspiration and do Yoga.🧘🏻♀️
😍Overall, I highly recommend a trip to Lake Toba and Samosir Island. The natural beauty of the lake is unmatched, and the opportunity to learn about the Batak culture is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whether you're looking for a relaxing vacation or an adventure-filled trip, this destination has something for everyone. 😍😘

Danau Toba Parapat Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
From Medan to Lake Toba by public transport
#celebratewithtrip
I took the local bus from Amplas bus terminal in Medan to Parapat. (Rp 60,000) If you are taking the bus from Kualanamu Airport to Medan city (Rp40,000), take note that the bus may not stop right at Amplas bus station. I had to ask the bus driver to stop in the middle of the road and walked 20 min to the bus terminal. I think the new bus terminal is still under construction as of September 2022. The current terminal is made up of a few pondoks (stalls). No facilities there.
It was a 4 hours ride from Medan to Parapat through winding and narrow roads especially towards the end of the ride. As my hotel was located along the main road, I asked the bus driver to drop me off at my hotel but unfortunately he dropped me at the wrong hotel so I had to walk around 2 km to my hotel. Luckily a kind local gave me a ride on his motorbike.
The view of Lake Toba along the road was amazing! However the road conditions were bad. There was literally no space for pedestrians to walk. I felt quite unsafe walking on the road as I had to walk very close to the edge to avoid being run over by passing vehicles and constantly keep a look out for vehicles behind me.
There were many stalls and small restaurants along the main road. Most of them offer a very nice view of Lake Toba and the prices were cheap. The lake view from my room in Gapura Hotel was superb too!

I really love for staying here. The staffs are very friendly, kind and also professional. The room is so comfort, classy, classic, and the view is so good. The location I think in the middle of the city. We can go every where which is only takes around 5 minutes to Sun Plaza. The most I like here is the breakfast menus. So many choices that you can enjoy while you stay here. Very hopefully I can stay here next. Thank You for a best service.

Mount Sibayak Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Mount Sibayak
One of the mountains is suitable for people who are climbing for the first time, tracking is not too steep, the view is good, and meeting friends from outside the area, as well as abroad, but it's a shame because there is a lot of trash scattered around, if you go to tourist spots, always try to bring it home Trash yourself, always maintain good manners in a place like this, those who bring vehicles check the health of the vehicle because the path to the parking post is quite steep and the road is rocky.
MOUNT SIBAYAK
Mount Sibayak is a mountain in Karo Regency, North Sumatra. The Karo tribe call Mount Sibayak as "mountain Raja". Mount Sibayak is a volcano and last erupted in 1881. This mountain is located about 50 kilometers southwest of Medan City. Nowadays, Mount Sibayak is visited by many people because there are many accesses to Mount Sibayak, starting from Sibayak 1 and Sibayak 2. Every August 17, at Mount Sibayak there is a routine ceremony and climbing competition for all nature lovers from all over the world.

Mount Sibayak
Easy to get to from Berastagi town, this is a 1k walk ('climb' is a bit overstated, though there are some sharper inclines and steps) which can be undertaken by anyone who is reasonably fit. The pathway is clearly defined, though we had a guide. It takes about an hour to get up and slightly less to get down.
There is a small charge to take the access road and, for safety, it is recommended that you register your names both on the ascent and the descent. (There is a large permanent notice at the registration hut listing the names and nationalities of those who have died in trying to 'go it alone', so getting lost is a genuine possibility if you leave the well worn trail.)
Once on the ridge of the crater you will be able to see the sulphur streams shooting out of the hillside and can walk down onto the floor which is covered in water. It is a shame that previous visitors have thought it appropriate to 'write' their names using rocks on the floor. It makes getting a natural photo difficult.
Fortunately we went on a day when there were no campers at the top and just a handful of people. I'm told that at certain times of year it can all get very busy.
We followed our volcano experience with a visit to the local hot springs a few kilometres away. A small charge was expected for entry and they were genuinely quite warm!

SIBAYAK VOLCANO
Mount Sibayak is a volcano in Berastagi, North Sumatra, Indonesia. From Medan International Airport is 70 km (2,5 hours) and from Berastagi it took just about 20 minutes by car. The price of climbing Sibayak Volcano depends if you go with a guide or if you decide to go alone.
Our guide picked us up in his car at our accommodation at 4:30 am. We drove around 30 minutes to the highest spot possible.
It cost 550k IDR (55 AUD) for both of us with pick up and drop off back at our room. Hiking Gunung Sibayak takes with a guide just about 1,5 hours. The not too long hike will take you up to the clouds, with sulfur steaming all around you and panoramic view of Berastagi.
We did the sunrise hike and that´s something we can highly recommend you even though it means to get up at 4:30 am.
As we started our hike in the dark, we could smell the sulfur immediately. After a while, we heard this really loud noise like a plane taking off:D. And that’s when our guide told us this is the sound of the steam coming out of the earth. Inside of Sibayak is boiling water and the steam is shooting under unbelievably strong pressure through the ground and creates this insane sound!
As there is a lot of spots where the hot steam is coming out and holes with boiling water, having a guide with you is a really good idea.
After an hour and a half, we made it to one of three summits and waited for the sunrise and the sky colours to the pink and purple. After sunrise, our guide took us for a walk into the actual crater, told us a little bit more about the history of Sibayak and we started our walk back down.
During the rainy season, the crater is filled with water and forms a volcanic lake. There is even a possibility of camping right next to the crater with a tent.
After the hike, you can go to relax your muscles into hot springs at Semangat Gunung.

Bukit Lawang
As only one of two places in the entire world to see wild orangutangs in their natural habitat, jungle trekking in Sumatra is a must for those interested in adventure travel. Offering a range of services including airport pickup and transfer, accommodation on offer to suit all budgets, white water rafting, as well as 1 to 30 day jungle tours, the guys at Bukit Lawang Jungle have you covered.
They are incredibly knowledgable having grown up in amongst the orangutangs, monkeys and various bird wildlife so you are almost guaranteed to find what you are looking for. Within 2 minutes on entering the national park I was greeted by orangutangs who have got used to tourists coming and going out of the park so you get a lot closer than you will imagine. Kind, helpful and accommodating people who I would thoroughly recommend.
Thoroughly recommend the adventure with these guys!

To be able to see wild Sumatran Orangutans you need to visit Gunung Leuser National Park in Bukit Lawang in North Sumatra. As this tropical rainforest in Bukit Lawang is a Sumatran National Park you need to have a guide for entering and pay an entrance fee. There are only two places in the world where you can see wild orangutans. Here in Sumatran Rainforest and in Borneo.
Do I need a guide for Sumatra Jungle trek?
Yes, you need a guide.
First, it would be really dangerous to go in alone and you would miss out on all the information and knowledge these guides have and will share them with you.
Secondly, by hiring a guide and paying National Park entrance fees, you are supporting more than one local family as well as the Indonesian government. And by supporting the Indonesian government you are helping to make sure nobody will destroy the Bukit Lawang rainforest and the home of Sumatran Orangutans in order to grow Palm tree plantations for palm oil. With over 1 000 000 ha Sumatrans rain forest is being home to many endangered animals like the Sumatran Tiger, Rhinoceros, Elephant, and Sumatran Orangutans.
When to go and see wild Orangutans?
We went at the end of February and the weather was alright!:) Usually it rained only in the night and it wasn´t too hot to hike all day long. But mainly it was off the main season, so we rarely saw other people trekking and it made our experience even more connected with nature.
How long does the jungle trek for?
That totally depends on you! You can do as short as a few hours or you can spend more than one week in the jungle!:)
Usually, people do 1 or 2 nights (2 -3 days) to be able to get a little deeper to the rainforest and see more of the wildlife.
