Here's a beginner-friendly hiking guide for a 14km round trip (half-way option). 🚗Itinerary Depart from Zhengzhou at 8:30 am. The entire journey is on the expressway and takes about 2 hours by car. Navigate to Qinlong Gorge Scenic Area. The parking lot is free; just find a parking space. The entrance to the scenic area is also free. There are only two restrooms: one at the entrance and another one below the steps of the "Hekoucun Reservoir" sign. There are no restrooms inside, so be sure to take advantage of these two opportunities. Hiking Route: 📍Hekoucun Reservoir: After climbing the steps, you'll see the beautiful lake. On sunny days, the shimmering water and the lake's color are truly captivating. See Figures 4 and 5. Next, you'll reach a toll booth (2 yuan per person). Before entering the cave, there's a small path leading to the lakeside where you can find search boats. This spot is perfect for taking photos (Figure 1 was taken here). You'll need a flashlight to navigate through the 11 caves. In one of the caves, you can capture the "golden light piercing through the cave." From this point on, there's no cell phone signal, so you'll officially be "off the grid." The areas connecting the caves also offer stunning views (see Figure 9). Emerging from the caves, the bright light and surrounding scenery are truly breathtaking. 📍Macaque Bridge: The first Macaque Bridge is dilapidated and not open to tourists unless you climb over it, which is somewhat risky. This is not recommended for a safe experience. However, local shepherds can be seen leading their sheep across it (see Figure 10). 📍Golden Grassland: The path after the Macaque Bridge becomes a bit challenging, with narrow sections, so be careful (see Figures 13, 14, and 15). Next, you'll arrive at a beautiful golden grassland, a perfect spot for photos and sunbathing. It's incredibly relaxing. 🎈It's best to arrive before 2 pm to enjoy the perfect sunlight. The Sanqing Hall was rebuilt during the Jin Dynasty and is a typical example of the wooden structure of the Jin Dynasty, with a wide interior space, simple and rough beams and columns, and a compact and stable structure. The temple also has ancient buildings such as the Mountain Gate (Qing) and the Jade Emperor Hall (Ming). The stele section, the Taishang Laojun Stone Statue Stele, was erected in the first year of the Tang Dynasty, recording the merits and demerits of the emperors of the past dynasties, praising the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty, and the Qing Dynasty epigrapher Ye Changchi praised this stele as "the article is magnificent, the calligraphy is beautiful, and it is the crown of the Taoist steles of the Tang Dynasty." Jidu Temple is one of the core scenic spots in Jiyuan, a cultural landmark of Jiyuan, and a national key cultural relic protection unit. It is one of the largest ancient building complexes in Henan. In ancient China, sacrifices to mountains and rivers were very important. In addition to the famous Three Mountains and Five Sacred Mountains, there were also the Four Rivers (Yellow River, Yangtze River, Huai River, and Ji River). Jidu Temple was built to worship the Ji River and is the largest water god temple in China. Jidu Temple was built in the second year of the Kaihuang period of the Sui Dynasty. It was a place for official sacrifices by the court. It was repaired and expanded in successive dynasties, and 22 ancient buildings are still preserved. Sacrifices were usually held before the winter solstice every year, and the number of sacrifices would increase in the event of droughts, floods, or major national events. After a series of complicated rituals, jade slips and tributes were thrown into the river to pray for protection (the Song Dynasty jade slips in the Jiyuan Museum were discovered during repairs). Tolongjianji, built in the first year of the Yanyou period of the Yuan Dynasty, written by Zhou Yingji, calligraphy by Zhao Mengfu, and seal script by Guo Guan. Daming Edict Stele, built in the third year of the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, records that Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang, conferred the title of "God of the Great Ji of the North" on the Ji River. The Sarira Pagoda is one of the cultural landmarks of Jiyuan. It was first built in the first year of the Jingyou period of the Northern Song dynasty and is now a national key cultural relic protection unit. The Jiyuan Cultural Relics Management Bureau is also located here. The construction of the Sarira Pagoda is related to the Daming Temple mentioned earlier. During the Northern Song dynasty, Daming Temple was still called Tonghui Zen Temple. The monk Fayan of the Zen Temple discussed with the abbot of Yanqing Temple to build a pagoda to enshrine the sarira. In 1983, the Sarira Pagoda was obviously tilted, and partial repairs and corrections were carried out. In 2019, large-scale repairs were carried out. In 2021, the ground on both sides of the pagoda foundation subsided due to heavy rainfall, causing cracks in the northeast pagoda body on the first floor of the pagoda. Emergency repairs were carried out later, and the pagoda is still not open to the public. The Sarira Pagoda is located next to Longtan Park, and you can see it from a distance outside the wall. The pagoda is inlaid with 1,344 carved bricks of Buddha niches, with delicate carvings and smooth clothing lines, which are worth seeing. Unfortunately, the temple is not open due to repairs, so you can only see it from a distance.

Jiyuan has many cultural relics. This time, I went to Zhicheng Guandi Temple, which was built in the second year of the Dading period of the Jin Dynasty and renovated during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is now a national key cultural relic protection unit. The mountain gate and Guandi Hall of Guandi Temple retain the relics of the Jin and Yuan Dynasties. The beams and columns are simple and the paintings are mottled. It is worth seeing. It is located near the Fourth Middle School of Jiyuan City, not far from the west entrance of Zhicheng Hospital. It is open to the public for free. It is relatively remote and there are not many tourists.

Erxian Temple is located in Daxu Village, Lilin Town, 13 km northeast of Jiyuan City. It was announced as a Henan Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit in September 2000, and was approved by the State Council as the eighth batch of national key cultural relics protection units in 2019. Erxian Temple is also known as Zixu Yuanjun Temple. According to the Ming Dynasty's "Stele Inscription of the Reconstruction of the Xiantian Shengmu Jingying Palace," the two immortals were called Wei Huacun, the second daughter of Shu, Duke of Wenkang of Rencheng, and Wei Yangyuan, Marquis of Juyang, during the Western Jin Dynasty, and the wife of Liu Youyan, the Grand Guardian of Nanyang. She was fond of Taoism since childhood and was deeply admired by the people, who called her Zixu Yuanjun. Erxian Temple was built in the Tang Dynasty, facing south, with buildings constructed along the central axis, including Zixu Yuanjun Hall, East Hall, Jingying Hall, and Worship Hall, with a total of four ancient buildings and 22 rooms. There are also more than ten steles and stone carvings scattered in the temple. Among them, the main building, Yuanjun Hall, has three rooms and six rafters, and is a single-eave Xieshan-style wooden structure from the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. The eaves are surrounded by layers of dougong, with exquisitely carved dragon heads. The large beams are intricately carved with dragons, clouds, auspicious beasts, birds, and other exquisite patterns, with fine craftsmanship and smooth lines, making them lifelike. They are very similar to the cloud dragon carvings on the lattice windows of the Jade Emperor Pavilion in Yangtai Palace, and are considered masterpieces of Ming Dynasty carving art. The seven beams inside the hall are large, with a diameter of 85 cm, reflecting the characteristics of ancient Jiyuan architecture. Daming Temple is located in Zhicheng Town, 6 km south of Jiyuan City, Henan Province, and is adjacent to Nigou River in the west. The history of Daming Temple can be traced back to the early Western Han Dynasty. Its predecessor was the incense burning courtyard for the sacrifice of the ancestors of the Marquis of Zhi. During the Jingyou period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1034–1038), it had developed considerably and was called Tonghui Zen Temple at that time. At the end of the Jin Dynasty, it was destroyed by war and became a ruin. In the 13th year of the Zhiyuan period of the Yuan Dynasty (1276), it was rebuilt over a period of 30 years and renamed to its current name.
