Walking along the West Jin Ferry Ancient Street towards the Zhenjiang Museum, you will find the old site of the British Consulate. The unexpected beauty under the warm sun in early winter, as if in a small town in Europe, is very photogenic. Sitting outside for a cup of coffee, the atmosphere is great. The old site of the British Consulate in Zhenjiang is located on the 53rd slope of the West Jin Ferry Ancient Street in Zhenjiang City, and is now the Zhenjiang Museum. During the Second War in 1858, the Qing government was forced to sign the Sino-British Tianjin Treaty with Britain, and Zhenjiang was opened as a commercial port. In 1864, Britain began to build a consulate on Yuntai Mountain. In early 1888, the foreign police in Zhenjiang killed the Chinese, and the angry crowd burned down the consulate and the patrol room. The Qing government succumbed to the invaders, and it was rebuilt in 1889. The existing old site is the building rebuilt at that time. There are 5 buildings in total, all of which are brick and wood structures. The taller one is the office building, the one in the northwest is the staff dormitory and 3 stables, and the 2 square buildings on the hillside are the residences of the consul and deputy consul. The two-story building on the southeast side is a dormitory, dining room and entertainment place, and the three-story rectangular building facing the river on the north side is the Ministry of Works and the patrol room.
