Zhenjiang Museum - Gain a deeper understanding of Zhenjiang

The Zhenjiang Museum is most distinctive for the fact that the museum building is the former site of the British Consulate in Zhenjiang, making the museum itself a cultural relic, just like the Forbidden City Palace Museum. The building was designed and constructed by British architects at that time. The Zhenjiang Museum is a national first-class museum, and its collection of precious cultural relics ranks third among the 13 key museums in Jiangsu, only behind the Nanjing Museum and the Suzhou Museum. In 1842, Zhenjiang opened its port for trade, and in 1865, Zhenjiang had its British concession, where the British Consulate was built, with the concession area stretching along the river at the foot of the mountain. Zhenjiang's cultural relics, with numerous treasures, bear witness to its long history. The Wu culture bronzes account for 85% of the national museum collections, and the Six Dynasties celadon is second only to Nanjing, Tang dynasty gold and silver wares account for two-thirds of the national total, and from the Six Dynasties to the Ming and Qing dynasties, gold and silver wares have become a series, 30 sets of Southern Song silk garments are unparalleled in the country, nearly 6000 Ming and Qing paintings and calligraphy are enviable, with the 'Jingjiang School of Painting' being particularly distinctive, and a rich collection of Qing dynasty porcelain. Among the collections, many 'little cuties' have been discovered, as well as national treasures and cultural relics forbidden from being exhibited abroad. Zhenjiang, with a three-thousand-year history of civilization, is the birthplace of Wu culture.
