The Ancient Salt Merchants' Trail

The Ancient Salt Merchants' Trail was a path used by ancient private salt traders. Xinchang, on the eastern side, bordered the salt-producing Ninghai, where private salt traders smuggled salt. They chose the small paths through the deep mountains and cold valleys because these paths were not easily intercepted by the official soldiers. As more and more private salt traders took this route, it also became a passage for mountain people to enter and exit the mountains. Later, people invested money and effort to pave the road with stones and even built pavilions for resting. Gradually, this small path truly became the renowned Ancient Salt Merchants' Trail. The main trunk of the ancient trail is about 20 kilometers long.
