Near Zhongshan Park, there is a small and inconspicuous place called Xinyi Road. Online, people say it feels very Taiwanese and local, but I prefer how it looks when bathed in sunlight. With my feet on the road where light and shadow intertwine, basking in the warm sunshine, tall tree shadows lean diagonally over the mottled rooftops. For a moment, it feels like stepping into a Hayao Miyazaki anime. Delivery riders on small electric scooters come and go on the street, while in the attic, an uncle’s cooking sizzles. By the roadside, the lush green Monstera leaves catch my eye. A man reading with his legs crossed makes me imagine what retirement might look like. A breeze blows, and bougainvillea and leaves fall gently. At this moment, I seem to understand the romance of autumn. From the corner bun shop wafts a nostalgic aroma. At the alley entrance, an auntie pulling life forward seems to have forgotten that mealtime has arrived. Suddenly, horns blare at the intersection—turns out life is playing a joke on the drivers again.
