Baotong Temple is located in Wuchang District. It was first built during the Southern Dynasties and was originally named Dongshan Temple. It has a history of over 1,600 years and is the oldest existing temple in Wuhan. The temple has a mountain gate, a holy monk bridge, a release pond, a bell tower, a drum tower, a Daxiong Hall, a Maitreya Hall, a Sutra Building, a Wanfo Hall, etc. Behind the temple are the Dharma Palace, Yanhua Cave, and Hongshan Pagoda. Baotong Zen Temple has always been a royal temple. The temple buildings are very similar to the buildings of the Forbidden City in Beijing. It is a typical royal temple and plays an important role in the study of religious and cultural history activities in Central and South China and even the whole country.
