Natural Rock-Built Treasures

Exploring Spain's Central Plateau ~ Teruel (Region) From the late 12th century to the early 19th century, this town was under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Zaragoza. In the late 14th century, Archbishop García began transforming the defensive castle into an episcopal palace. He rebuilt and expanded the ground floor and first floor, leaving his personal mark on the numerous coat of arms found within the rooms. García passed away in 1411, but his mission was continued by his successors, particularly the Catalan Archbishop Dalmau, who oversaw the reconstruction of the second floor and upper sections of the castle. Its appearance became more opulent than military, as it hardly served any defensive purpose. The only certainty is that it was built around a natural rock (the peak of which can still be seen on the second floor) and reinforced as a defensive element, whether during the Christian reconquest or by one of the pre-Christian cultures that inhabited these lands.
