Mahawanaram Temple

Wat Mahawanaram, originally named Wat Pa Luang Mani Chot Si Sawat, is popularly known as Wat Pa Yai. It is a royal temple and an ancient temple of Ubon Ratchathani Province. It is located on Luang Road, Nai Mueang Subdistrict, Mueang Ubon Ratchathani District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. "Wat Mahawanaram" is considered to be very important in terms of history, archaeology, and good arts and culture for more than 200 years. In particular, it is a temple that enshrines Phra Chao Yai In Plaeng, a sacred Buddha image of Ubon Ratchathani Province. Phra Chao Yai In Plaeng is a Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya attitude, 3 meters wide and 5 meters high, beautifully decorated with Lan Xang Buddhist art. The Buddha image is made of stucco called "Pun Chatay", which is made by mixing soil from Phon with glue and plastering it like cement, then applying lacquer and gold leaf. The name Phra Chao Yai In Plaeng means the Buddha image that Phra In created. Legend has it that there are 3 of them: one in Vientiane, one in Nakhon Phanom, and one in Wat Mahawanaram itself. The construction of Phra Chao Inpeng was said to have rain and thundered the entire time when the craftsmen were sculpting Phra Chao Inpeng until they reached the face. It was almost finished because all that remained was to beautify it. So they stopped sculpting the face first and then went home. When night fell, the temple was full of light and rays of light shot into the air. People were shocked and ran to the temple to look, but they saw nothing. So they returned to their homes. In the morning, it turned out that the face that was not yet finished was completely finished and beautiful. When they saw that, the villagers said that an angel had created it, and Indra had transformed himself to create it, transforming himself into a white cloth to create it, so it was beautiful like this. If it had been created by an ordinary person, it would not have been this beautiful. Therefore, it was named "Phra Chao Inpeng" and later called Phra Chao Yai Inpeng.
