Trier, the ancient capital of Germany

Trier is a city on the Moselle River in Germany. It lies in a valley between low, vine-covered red sandstone hills in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, close to the Luxembourg border, within the important Moselle wine region. Trier became a Celtic settlement in the late 4th century BC and was conquered by the Romans 300 years later, who renamed it Augusta Treverorum ("City of Augustus in Treveri"), one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. Trier is considered the oldest city in Germany and it is also the seat of the oldest archbishop north of the Alps. In the Middle Ages, the Archbishop-Elector of Trier was an important cardinal in the Church, controlling lands from the French border to the Rhine. The Archbishop-Elector of Trier also had great significance as one of the seven electors of the Holy Roman Empire. Due to its importance during the Roman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, several of Trier's monuments and cathedrals are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
