The Essential Vilnius Experience: History, Lakes, and Evening Lights

📅 Itinerary Day1:Exploring the Historic Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site) Cathedral Square & Bell Tower: Start at the heart of the city. The neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral is the main Catholic church. Climb the separate bell tower for a first panoramic view. Gediminas Tower: The remaining part of the Upper Castle on a hill. It's a short but steep walk up from the cathedral. The view over the red-roofed old town and the modern city is iconic and a perfect photo opportunity. There's also a funicular if you don't want to walk. Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania: Located next to the cathedral, this is a meticulously reconstructed palace showcasing the grandeur of the Lithuanian state's history. The museum inside is vast and excellent. Day2: Fairytale Castles and Karaites in Trakai Location: Trakai is about 28 km (17 miles) west of Vilnius. How to get there: Bus is the most convenient option. Buses depart frequently from the Vilnius Central Bus Station (located next to the main train station). The journey takes about 40 minutes. You can also take a train for a scenic route, but the station in Trakai is a longer walk from the castle. Recommendations & Itinerary Idea: Morning: Take a bus from Vilnius. Try to arrive in Trakai by 10:00 or 11:00 to beat the biggest crowds. Walk from the bus stop towards the famous Trakai Island Castle. The path takes you along the beautiful Lake Galvė, with stunning views of the red-brick Gothic castle built on an island. Afternoon: Explore the Castle: Cross the wooden footbridge to enter the castle. It now houses a historical museum detailing the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Trakai. The courtyards and views from the castle walls are spectacular. Key Activity: Take a boat trip on Lake Galvė. Small boats and pedalos are available for rent near the castle. Seeing the castle from the water is a must-do. Day3: Relaxation, Views, and Italian Farewell Location: A mix of Užupis, the River Neris, and a good pizzeria. Recommendations & Itinerary Idea: Morning/Afternoon (Art & Independence): Užupis Republic: Cross the bridge into the self-proclaimed "independent republic" of artists and bohemians. This is Vilnius's quirky Montmartre. See the Angel of Užupis statue, and don't miss reading the Constitution of Užupis on Paupio street (articles include "Everyone has the right to be unique" and "A dog has the right to be a dog"). Three Crosses Hill: For one last great view, take a walk up to the Three Crosses Monument in Kalnai Park. It's a white monument commemorating Christian martyrs and offers a breathtaking panorama of the Old Town. It's a 15-20 minute walk from the base. Evening (Dinner): Focuspizza: A perfect choice to end your trip! This is not just a pizzeria; it's highly regarded for its authentic Neapolitan-style pizza. The ingredients are high-quality and the atmosphere is modern and lively. #foodlover #trakaiislandcastle #vilnius #lithuania
