The Tiao Mi Ancient Trail, with just 500 steps to the top

The character 'Tiao' (ㄊㄧㄠˋ) in 'Tiao Mi Ancient Trail' means 'to sell grain.' 'Tiao Mi' means 'selling rice.' During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, farmers in the Sanzhangli area decided to open up this mountain path to save time and energy in transportation. The path, with a total of 500 stone steps, facilitated the quick transport of rice from Nangang, Muzha, Shenkeng, and Jingmei, and also boosted trade. The trail is named 'Tiao Mi Ancient Trail' because of the Tiao Mi Temple along the way. Some people also call it 'Tiao Mi Trail.' Due to the steep steps, it is said that people carrying rice would often rest here. To thank the Earth God for a safe journey, they would leave a bowl of rice during their rest. Over time, the residents built a simple stone temple to show their respect to the Earth God. After several renovations, it became the current 'Tiao Mi Temple.' Nearby is the 'Dexing Coal Mine Entrance' (Figures 3-4). The Dexing Coal Mine began operations around 1897, peaked between 1946-48, and later ceased due to depleted coal veins. The mine entrance is now open for visitors. In 2011, the Tiao Mi Ancient Trail was renovated with repaved stone steps, a new arch bridge, wooden walkways, and explanatory signs along the route. This is the current appearance. With just 500 steps, you can easily reach the top. Along the way, there are several temples, and at the top, you can see Taipei 101. It's beautiful.
