Suncheon Choyeonjeong (超然亭) is a historic pavilion and garden located at the foot of Mohusan Mountain in Songgwang-myeon, Suncheon, Jeollanam-do. Originally built in 1788 by a monk from Daegwangsa Temple as Suseokjeong (水石亭), it was reconstructed in 1809 by Cho Jin-chung of Cheongryuheon and later renovated again in 1884 by his son, Cho Jae-ho. The name 'Choyeonjeong' comes from a plaque written by Song Byeong-seon in 1888, meaning 'tranquility that transcends nature.' Choyeonjeong served as a retreat emphasizing Confucian values and harmony with nature, a place where scholars of the time would gather for study and self-cultivation. Surrounded by the Samcheongcheon Valley, moss-covered rocks, and dense forests, the area creates a picturesque landscape akin to a traditional Korean painting, exuding a serene and harmonious atmosphere. The pavilion is a single-story building with a hipped roof, featuring a structure of three bays at the front and two bays on the side. It was designated as Jeollanam-do Monument No. 127 and Scenic Site No. 25 in 1990, ensuring its preservation.
