When it comes to in-depth tours of Kansai, besides Kyoto and Osaka, don’t miss the southern part of Wakayama Prefecture! This time I took public transportation for a non-drive in-depth experience of the Kumano Sanzan pilgrimage – setting foot in three low-key but super ethereal places: Nachikatsuura-cho, Tanabe City, and Shinmiya City. Along the Kumano Ancient Trail, visit Kumano Honnoya Taisha Shrine, Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine, Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine, coupled with Nachi Falls, Hitaki Shrine, Damensaka Ancient Road and the super healing Benten Island and Triple Pagoda, the entire trip is filled with ancient Japanese myths and natural energy. Non-driving route recommended for all those who like deep roaming, a little physical strength! Attraction inventory recommendations: 1. Hitaki Shrine 📍Address: Nachisan, Nachikatsuura Town, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture ⏰Opening Hours: 07:30-16:30 (year-round) Mainly a visual + mental double shock. Behind the shrine is the legendary "Nachi Falls", one of the three famous waterfalls in Japan - the water flows, the scene can feel the power of nature, super energy! The atmosphere in the museum is unexpectedly quiet and it is recommended to arrive in the morning to enjoy the daylight through the forest and avoid the crowds. 2. Damensaka 📍Address: Nachisan, Nachikatsuura-cho, Higashimou-gun, Wakayama Prefecture Must check in! The ancient road is full of greenery, the stone road winds up the mountain, and there are many Japanese traditional houses along the way. It takes about 20-30 minutes to walk from Hitaki Shrine to Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine to experience the heart-wrenching healing on the Kumano Ancient Trail. If the weather is good and there is still dappled light and shadow, it will have a special feeling. 3. Benten Island 📍Address: Katsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, Higashimou-gun, Nachikatsuura-cho A small island near the pier, great outdoor sea view, super many seabirds! Suitable for walking and taking pictures, enjoying the wind and watching the sunset. Within walking distance from Nachisukepo Station, it was definitely a refreshing little surprise on the pilgrimage. 4. Kumano Hongu Taisha 📍Address: 1110 Hongucho Hongu, Tanabe, Wakayama 647-1731 ⏰Opening Hours: 07:00-17:00 (year-round) One of the three mountains in Kumano, the shrine covers a large area and indulges in feeling the ancient Japanese belief culture. The architecture is solemn and the worship atmosphere is rich, suitable for spiritual recharge. You can also stop by to stroll around the small shops, souvenirs, royal guards are very interesting. 5. Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine 📍Address: Shingu, Wakayama 647-0081, Class 1 ⏰Opening Hours: 05:00-17:00 (year-round) Featuring super red torii and main building, strong sense of color! The sense of pilgrimage is full, some areas open earlier, it is recommended to come and walk in the early morning, early in the morning to successfully "check in". 6. Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine & Seiganto-ji Temple triple pagoda Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine is adjacent to Hitaki Shrine. The architectural style is quaint and the worship atmosphere is very serene. Next to it is the triple pagoda of Seiganto-ji Temple. The front of the pagoda and the Nachi Falls behind it are a must-take fantastic view of Wakayama! 📌 Important non-self-driving tips: As traffic in the Kumano Sanzan area is not very intensive, it is recommended to check bus departure and arrival times in advance. Mainly connected to various attractions by JR/Kumano transportation buses, light luggage is the most convenient! Google Map maps make errors from time to time. It is recommended to download the map beforehand. There are simple meals around each shrine, such as convenience stores and wagashi snacks, but it is safer to bring a small amount of water and snacks. 🍱 Food Recommendations: There is a local fishing port direct seafood bowl restaurant near the port area of Nachikatsuura-cho. The quality is worth a try. The small shops along the way mainly sell local famous plum and grapefruit products. If you are interested, you can buy them as souvenirs. 🌟Practical tips: 1. Please wear comfortable sneakers + rain gear when hiking the Kumano Ancient Road, the mountainous area has fog or light rain from time to time. 2. The journey is recommended to be arranged for more than two days to avoid fatigue rush. 3. Each shrine has a collection of Goshu Seal. Remember to bring a Goshu Seal tent. 4. Some attractions (such as Damensaka, Triple Pagoda) require climbing, seniors may consider walking distance. Whether you just want to just pray for blessings, take pictures, or immerse yourself in the mythical southern style of Japan, Kumano Sanzan will bring a different spiritual experience. Not driving, more down-to-earth savoring every scenic corner ~ #Kumano Sanzan #Wakayama In-depth Tour #Non-Driving Pilgrimage #Japanese Ancient Trail #Mind Healing
