A historic post town: Ouchi-juku

Ouchi-juku is a post town that still retains the streetscape of the Edo period. On both sides of the road that connected Aizu and Nikko, known as the Shimotsuke Kaido, thatched-roof houses lined the streets, and played an important role as a post station for feudal lords and travelers heading to Edo. Ouchi-juku is lined with old thatched-roof houses on both sides of the road. It flourished as a post town on the Aizu Nishi Kaido, which runs from Nikko to Aizu, and in the Edo period it was an important route for sankin-kotai (alternate attendance) and for transporting rice to Edo.
