The Canghai Campus is often referred to by students as the "South Area" or "South Campus". The construction of Shenzhen University's South Campus began after the Binhai Avenue was opened to traffic in 1999. Binhai Avenue is approximately 9.6 kilometers long, with 7.6 kilometers constructed by land reclamation from the sea. It is because of the reclamation project that Shenzhen University was able to obtain about 20 hectares of expansion space in the expensive Nanshan district. The Canghai Campus reflects a harmonious and simple artistic beauty in its architecture, which was actually designed by the people of Shenzhen University themselves. In 2004, the university entrusted the concept design work for the newly acquired land with a total construction area of 200,000 square meters to the Shenzhen University Architectural Design Research Institute. Such a design has created an urban "street wall" on the outside, allowing the internal space to maintain a moderate intensity while releasing enough ground space. Inside the buildings, public classrooms, lecture halls, exhibition halls, and office areas are intermingled; outside, a central pedestrian landscape belt on the first floor meets the traffic needs between buildings, and a second-floor platform is also set up to connect the teaching area, living area, and overpass.
