Mount Unabetsu

Mount Unabetsu is a must-visit destination for hiking enthusiasts traveling to Japan. Located in Hokkaido Prefecture, this trail is considered quite challenging and is best suited for experienced hikers seeking a serene and tranquil natural environment. The mountain is both tall and cold, offering breathtaking scenery. Snowshoes are essential for hiking here, and during extreme cold weather, hiking is prohibited. The best time to visit is between October and February. This mountain and the surrounding park are part of the Shiretoko Peninsula, allowing hikers to enjoy views of the sea on both sides from the summit. Additionally, there is a chance to catch a glimpse of Mount Rausu from the peak of Mount Unabetsu.

Shiretoko Peninsula

We're in Hokkaido for 15 days on a self driving trip. We visited key areas like Sapporo, Otaru, Kushiro, shari, Utoro, Asahikawa, Furano and Biei. Generally it was a place to relax and immerse yourself into nature. Well known places like Sapporo and Hakodate typically come to mind when talking about Hokkaido, but I would recommend the Shiretoko Peninsula and Asahikawa. For nature lovers. Shiretoko offers breathtaking views of mountains, lakes and seas. At Asahikawa. one can get the convenience of staying in a city and still be able to cover places like Biei and Furano, where there are beautiful views of flower orchards and paddy fields (where sunset view is quite stunning). One place which seldom gets recommendations (or it does? i could be wrong...) is Daisetsuzan National Park. When the weather is good and the sky is clear, take the skyway to the top and the view will make your trip worthwhile. I was up there in early June summer, there's still snow on which the children enjoy playing, as well as trails with running waters due to the melting snow. Nice experience. The zoo at Asahikawa is quite enjoyable too.

Shiretokogo Lake

#5月好去处2025 During this trip to Hokkaido, I finally came to a stop on my dream list - Shiretoko Five Lakes. This is part of the World Natural Heritage "Shiretoko Peninsula" and is known as one of the most primitive and natural places in Japan. Five quiet lakes lie quietly in the primeval forest, reflecting each other with the distant Shiretoko Mountains, as if time has slowed down. Walking through the Shiretoko Five Lakes will make you truly feel the weight of the saying "Man is part of nature". Here, time slows down, and nature is no longer just a landscape, but a way of existence. This is a journey that will remain deeply in your heart. If you come to Hokkaido, you must not miss it.
