Shaoshan ⛅️

We visited Shaoshan on a bright summer morning, and the experience was both powerful and surprisingly peaceful 🌿☀️. Known as the birthplace of Mao Zedong, the area has a calm, almost rural atmosphere that balances out its deep historical importance. Walking through the green hills and rice paddies toward Mao’s former residence, we passed vendors selling local snacks and souvenirs, but nothing felt overly commercialized. The house itself is well-preserved, with personal items and family spaces that made the visit feel intimate rather than distant or overly political. What stood out most was how well the site is integrated with the natural surroundings. Even in the height of summer, shaded paths and gentle breezes from the nearby forested hills made it comfortable to explore. There’s a museum nearby that dives into the historical context, but we found ourselves most drawn to the simple setting and reflective mood of the village.
