Where Crispy Meets Juicy: Xiao Yang Sheng Jian Experience on Huanghe Road Shanghai

#discoverchina 📍Address: XiaoYangShengJian 小杨生煎 上海市黄浦区黄河路97号 *nearby Nanjing pedestrian street 💰Average Price per Person: 30RMB per person 💞Reasons to Recommend: A Street Food Feast at Xiao Yang Sheng Jian (Huanghe Road): Tangy, Crispy, and Utterly Addictive If Shanghai had a signature flavor, you’d find it right here on Huanghe Road—sizzling in a pan, steaming from bamboo baskets, and carried on the hum of locals and tourists queuing up for a taste of the city’s most iconic bites. I made a quick stop at the legendary Xiao Yang Sheng Jian, but what I got was a full-blown street food experience that hit all the right notes: bold, comforting, and absolutely crave-worthy. Here’s what hit my table—and why I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. 1. 酸辣粉 (Suan La Fen – Hot & Sour Glass Noodles) A punchy opener. Deep red, aromatic broth packed with vinegar heat, chili oil, and a hint of Sichuan pepper. The slippery sweet potato noodles had the perfect chew, and every bite delivered a kick with a crunch—thanks to peanuts and pickled veggies. A bold and fiery wake-up call for the palate. 2. 生煎包 (Sheng Jian Bao – Pan-Fried Soup Dumplings) These were the headliners—and rightfully so. Crisped golden on the bottom, fluffy on top, and filled with juicy pork and hot broth. They arrive sizzling, and disappear fast. The soup inside is rich and savory, and the contrast of textures—crispy, doughy, juicy—is pure genius. One bite and you’ll understand why Xiao Yang built a legacy on this. 3. 鱼丸汤 (Yu Wan Tang – Fish Ball Soup) A quiet, comforting interlude. The fish balls were light, springy, and full of ocean flavor, swimming in a clear, umami broth. Bits of seaweed and ginger gave it a cleansing, refreshing finish—like a gentle palate reset between heavier dishes. 4. 蟹粉小笼包 (Crab Roe Xiao Long Bao) Decadence in a dumpling. The thin skin barely held in the rich pork and crab filling, with that signature orange crab oil glistening in the folds. One bite released a wave of buttery seafood essence—luxurious and satisfying. A must for anyone looking to elevate the dumpling experience. Overall experience: From the tongue-tingling heat of the suan la fen to the rich, golden bottom of the sheng jian bao, this meal was like a tour through the very soul of Shanghai street food. No frills, just flavor—and a whole lot of it. Xiao Yang lives up to the hype, and I’ll be back for another round (or two). #shengjianbao #xiaolongbaolove #suanlafen #foodiefinds #soupdumplingheaven #crabmeatxiaolongbao

Shanghai Museum

#discoverchina One can never visit Shanghai without visiting the iconic Shanghai Museum. If one were to do so, it’s like a man missing the opportunity to get culturally educated and inspired and it is one of the best curated museums in Shanghai. As it was their local school holiday on the date of our visit, the entrance was extremely crowded with long queues of visitors. It could be the tight security screening at the entrance that hindered the queue from shortening quickly. We spent at least half an hour to queue in order to enter the museum. Inside the museum, there were different levels catering to different types of artifacts and history to be shared. During my visit the 1st floor of the museum has been occupied by a big Egyptian special exhibit (which charges a quite high entrance fee, and doesn’t seem to warrant a visit), the content of the 3rd floor of the museum has been moved out to the Shanghai Museum East Building. The available exhibits are Marco Polo special exhibit (on the 2nd floor), and the All things glittering exhibit, the Ming-Qing Furniture exhibit, and the Chinese Minority Nationality Art exhibit on the 4th floor. The entire exhibit can be visited in about a hour.
