Artistic Treasures at Shanghai Museum

#discoverchina The Shanghai Museum, nestled in the bustling city center on People's Square, is a prestigious cultural landmark dedicated to preserving and showcasing China's vast historical and artistic treasures. Established in 1952, it has evolved into a world-class institution, housing an impressive collection spanning over 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. The museum's stunning architecture, with its iconic round dome and elegant design, creates a serene environment for exploring its diverse collections. These include ancient bronzes, exquisite ceramics, renowned paintings, masterpieces of calligraphy, and intricate jade carvings, among others. Each piece tells a story, reflecting the depth and breadth of China's cultural heritage. Visitors can marvel at highlights such as the intricate Shang Dynasty bronzes, the vibrant Tang Dynasty ceramics, and the sophisticated Ming Dynasty jade objects. The museum also offers educational programs and audio guides in multiple languages to enhance the visitor experience and deepen understanding of the exhibits. In summary, the Shanghai Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in Chinese art and history, providing a fascinating glimpse into the nation's rich and diverse cultural tapestry.

#discoverchina One can never visit Shanghai without visiting the iconic Shanghai Museum. If one were to do so, it’s like a man missing the opportunity to get culturally educated and inspired and it is one of the best curated museums in Shanghai. As it was their local school holiday on the date of our visit, the entrance was extremely crowded with long queues of visitors. It could be the tight security screening at the entrance that hindered the queue from shortening quickly. We spent at least half an hour to queue in order to enter the museum. Inside the museum, there were different levels catering to different types of artifacts and history to be shared. During my visit the 1st floor of the museum has been occupied by a big Egyptian special exhibit (which charges a quite high entrance fee, and doesn’t seem to warrant a visit), the content of the 3rd floor of the museum has been moved out to the Shanghai Museum East Building. The available exhibits are Marco Polo special exhibit (on the 2nd floor), and the All things glittering exhibit, the Ming-Qing Furniture exhibit, and the Chinese Minority Nationality Art exhibit on the 4th floor. The entire exhibit can be visited in about a hour.
