Free gardens in Nanxiang Ancient Town

There is a Tan Garden in Nanxiang Ancient Town, Shanghai, which is beautiful, exquisite, full of Jiangnan charm, and free for a limited time, ending on May 31st. Tan Garden was the private garden of Ming Dynasty literati Li Liufang, named after his literary name, Tan Yuan. The area of Tan Garden is not large, with a gourd-shaped pond located at the central position of the garden. Pavilions and towers surround the pond, combining the elegance of Suzhou gardens with the beauty of small bridges over flowing water. Baozun Hall is the main hall of Tan Garden and also the largest group of buildings in the garden. The furniture displayed inside is all in the style popular during the Ming Dynasty, looking simple and serene overall. However, upon closer inspection, the details of the openwork carvings are extremely delicate and aesthetically pleasing. Baozun Hall exhibits Li Liufang's calligraphy and painting works. Appreciating his works while being in the garden and house he personally built allows one to feel the unique carefree and leisurely lifestyle of the reclusive literati and scholars of that time.
