It’s a Basilica But Not a church

The Basilica of Maxentius, is in fact a basilica but not a basilica in the way that most would think of today, nowadays a basilica is a large and important church used for religious purposes but in ancient Rome a basilica served a variety of functions. It could be a courthouse, a council chamber, a meeting hall l. However there were numerous statues of gods displayed in the niches, not so dissimilar to more ‘modern’ basilicas and their statues of the Saints. #celebrateit #rome #ancient
