Rebun Island: Japan's Northernmost Floating Island of Flowers

Hokkaido's Rebun Island, Japan's northernmost remote island, is also known as the "Floating Island of Flowers." Located at the northernmost point of Japan, Rebun Island in Hokkaido is a paradise for alpine plant enthusiasts. Unlike mainland Japan, where alpine plants typically grow at altitudes of 2,000 meters, these plants can be observed at ground level on Rebun Island. Home to over 300 species of alpine plants, including species unique to the island, Rebun Island is often referred to as the "Floating Island of Flowers." The peak season for alpine plants spans from early May to around September, during which the island is adorned with a vibrant array of colors as different plants bloom in succession. One of the most popular flowers is the Rebun Atsumorisou, which blooms from early May to mid-June. Resembling an oversized lily-of-the-valley, its charming appearance has made it highly sought after. Due to its popularity, illegal harvesting became rampant in the past, and the flower is now strictly protected. Another favorite is the Rebun Usuyukisou, a delicate flower resembling Edelweiss.
