In 1982, it was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit. On January 5, 2001, it was listed as a national 4A-level tourist attraction. On July 25, 2021, Kaiyuan Temple was listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site as one of the 22 representative ancient sites. The main buildings in Kaiyuan Temple are divided into three types: official buildings, palace buildings, and Chinese-Western buildings. They reflect the Buddhist teachings and rules, the influence of the Central Plains and overseas on the architectural style of Kaiyuan Temple, and the individuality, aesthetics, and spiritual needs of the local culture. Important attractions include the East and West Towers, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Sutra Pavilion, the Mahavira Hall, the Master Hongyi Memorial Hall, and the Quanzhou Bay Ancient Ship Exhibition Hall. In the autumn of 1962, the writer Guo Moruo visited Kaiyuan Temple and wrote a poem about Quanzhou: "The coral trees have withered in the coral city, the Buddhist world and the mulberry lotus are connected to the great ocean. The twin stone towers stand tall, the incense burner is left alone."
