Potsdam, Germany

Potsdam is the capital of the German state of Brandenburg and part of the Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan area. Potsdam sits on the Havel River, a tributary of the Elbe downstream from Berlin, in a mountainous moraine landscape dotted with many lakes, about 20 of which are within the city limits. This over 1,000-year-old city is famous for its palaces, lakes, and its overall historical and cultural significance. Landmarks include the park and palace of Sanssouci, Germany's largest World Heritage Site, as well as other palaces such as the Orangery Palace, the New Palace, the Cecilienhof Palace and the Charlottenhof Palace. Potsdam was also the site of the important Potsdam Conference in 1945, where the three heads of government of the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom decided on the division of Germany after its surrender at the Cecilienhof Palace, defining the 45 years of German history before reunification. The Glenicke Bridge over the Havel River near Cecilienhof Palace (the iron bridge in the center of Figure 2) was the only bridge connecting East and West Berlin that was completely controlled by the Soviet army during the Cold War. It was also called the "Bridge of Spies" because it was the place where the United States and the Soviet Union used it to exchange captured spies during the Cold War, including U2 spy plane pilots shot down by the Soviet Union.
