Gubyaukgyi Temple: A Treasure Trove of Ancient Murals in Bagan

#springitinerary Tucked away in the village of Myinkaba, just south of Old Bagan, the Gubyaukgyi Temple is a true gem for lovers of history, art, and architecture. Though modest in size compared to Bagan’s towering temples, Gubyaukgyi holds something truly priceless within — some of the oldest and most well-preserved frescoes in all of Myanmar. 🕰️ Built by a Prince Constructed in 1113 AD by Prince Yazakumar, son of King Kyansittha. Built to honor his father and as an offering of merit after he was passed over for the throne. The name "Gubyaukgyi" means “Great Painted Cave Temple.” ✨ Artistic & Spiritual Highlights Mon-style architecture with a single main hall and a tall spire (sikhara) inspired by Indian influence. The inner walls are lined with frescoes depicting 550 Jataka tales — stories of the Buddha’s previous lives. Inscriptions in both Pali and Old Mon script accompany the paintings, offering rare linguistic insight. A large seated Buddha image dominates the main shrine, radiating peace and serenity. 🧱 Preservation & Protection To preserve its fragile frescoes, the interior is dimly lit, and photography is often restricted. Restoration work has helped retain much of its original beauty, but the temple remains a delicate window into the past. 📍 How to Visit Location: Myinkaba Village, a short bike ride from Old Bagan Opening Hours: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM Entrance Fee: Included in the Bagan Archaeological Zone ticket ⛅ Best Time to Visit Visit in the early morning for quiet reflection and softer natural lighting inside the temple. Ideal for travellers seeking depth over grandeur — Gubyaukgyi is about quiet artistry rather than towering scale. A Hidden Jewel in Bagan’s Crown Gubyaukgyi Temple is where art, devotion, and history meet. For anyone interested in Myanmar’s rich Buddhist heritage or ancient mural painting, this temple is an absolute must-see. #GubyaukgyiTemple #BaganMurals #AncientArt #MyanmarHeritage #JatakaTales #HiddenGemsBagan #CulturalTreasure #BuddhistStories #TempleHopping #MyanmarTravel
