Nong Khiaw is a rustic, picturesque village in northern Laos, a 3-hour drive away from the UNESCO Heritage town of Luang Prabang. The village sits on the banks of the Nam Ou River and embraced by the river gorge at its base. IS NONG KHIAW FOR YOU? If you like nature and smitten with the feel of old-timey villages in Southeast Asia, then Nong Khiaw is for you. With houses covered by coffee-colored roofs and fishermen casting their nets, Nong Khiaw evokes the feeling of being untouched by time. WHEN TO GO: We visited in March towards the end of the winter season and the Nam Ou River was still filled up. The winter season runs from October to March and this would be the best time to visit Nong Khiaw when the weather is cool and pleasant. The water level on Nam Ou River will be quite low during the summer season (April-June) and the heat could be unbearable.
